Yeah, the way someone said it to me (not that I needed that, I was already planning to go over the recommended minimum space for my beardie) is: "Your enclosure shouldn't be the equivalent to a house, it should be a neighborhood." You can still take them out of that neighborhood from time to time, assuming they can be handled like hamsters or rats or beardies, but it should really cover their needs for exploration as much as their basic requirements for living.

Hey Victoria// Wonderful video as ever! I just wanted to say that I do work in a pet store (not Pets at Home / we dont sell animals) and I've made a business pitch to my bosses to implement large hamster cages into our stores. I made an 11 page google doc about how bad cages are currently, how we need to educate people and actually linked your YT channel to show how big of a community it is; They want to have a meeting with me on 1st March about my idea! I'm really hoping they'll take me up on my idea so we can sell good cages to hamster parents

You need to come prepared for their objections such as... the amount of space a large enclosure takes up in a pet store, displacing other salable items; the amount of profit for a large enclosure compared to a small enclosure that looks bright and fun. Now the positives would be if a large enclosure was mass produced the cost of manufacturing it would decrease allowing it to be more affordable for people who want to buy and treat their hamsters with a humane living environment. You could point out that a larger enclosure could start a huge amount of after purchase items that would now be able to fit in the cage. Different colors, different styles and such leading to a hamster purchase at a small price could lead to more sales and purchases later driving customers back in the store on a more frequent basis to enrich their pets environment. Victoria will say that vertical space does not count but I believe that a three to four floor (each floor 400 sq in) enclosure with safe inclines would add total square footage that is usable and livable while decreasing total square footage the enclosure takes on the floor . A hamster could have a large deep bottom floor suitable for burrowing with a portion for the wheel that would have openings through the second and third floor while allowing the hamster to have other enriching items on other floors. By keeping the food at a higher level the hamster would be encouraged to leave their burrowing space where they could be seen and appreciated by their owner. I have designed many multiple bin enclosures but a bin is a clunky starting point in the design process as plastic bins have to be suitable for releasing humidity and allowing air in but a real good design could be made from the start for a hamster living environment using low weight components suitable for a hamster while relying upon natural elements to enrich a home and the hamsters life.

Maybe like a year ago I wanted a hamster, asked my parents, since I’m 16 and responsible they said yes w/out me having to beg since I already have pets. I picked everything out, bought it (since I have a job), and I bought an ikea detolf. When it got here and I built it with my brother, they said a hamster doesn’t need that much space and to send it back. After a few mins of trying to prove them wrong, ‘I’m the child and their the parents so I’m wrong.’ She went to Amazon and found the a critter trail, she said ‘either this or no hamster bcuz they don’t need that much space.’ I obviously chose no hamster bcuz I don’t want him/her to suffer and I’m sad😔

He used to come out to play but now he’s in his borrows all the time. I miss him so much. I’m what to do and I’m just tired of sleeping on the couch because of him lol (he is going into a pet room to and getting a new play pen if he comes out) luv u ❤️

The same thing happened when I upgraded my daughter's hamster enclosure so we got the video camera Victoria uses. The camera has an app and whenever it detects movement it will record 10 seconds or so. If you get the SD Card you can choose to play back longer periods of time. You can also set the app to alert you when there is movement so maybe on a weekend when you have nothing to do early the next day you can set it to wake you up and have some play time. It's not too expensive either. We got the Wyze V3 Cam from Amazon for about $40 and the card was another $13. Good luck!

This is such a great way to show how small the hamster's "world" is in a small pet store cage. What's sad, is that in my country there are even smaller cages sold for hamsters and people like those because they take up so little space and are so cheap. Just in December I rescued a dwarf hamster from living in a carrier. She's doing much better now, living in a 100cmx50cm enclosure and she's getting upgraded to a diy 120cmx55cm enclosure soon. 😊❤

Hey! I always knew pet store hamster cages were too small, but this really helps me understand it even more! Showing how little room that is for you, and you didn’t even have space to add things like a shower, dresser, couch, nightstand, desk, and your hamster enclosures! And like you said, the enclosure is the hamster’s whole world. And we have the freedom to go wherever we want. I will for sure show this to friends and family! Great job! I'm gonna point out that the calculations in this video are done for if a human was standing all the time. But we mostly sit in our homes. That takes up more space. We even lie down sometimes and that takes up even more space (our full length x width, not just width x width). So these are my calculations for a human in their most common position when they're hanging out in their home: sitting. The area that sitting takes up is approx 70x60 cm, that is 4200square cm. That makes the cage 4200 x 34.4 square cm. That becomes an area 14,4 square meters. The cage ends up being around the size of 3m x 4,8m which is the same as 9.8 x 15.7 square feet or 154 square feet. Yeah, that is still too small, especially if you couldn't leave when you wanted. And certainly if you're an animal that runs for a living.

Because of videos like this I bought a tall detolf cabinet and made a cage out of it for my dwarf hamster. He was extremely scared at first because all his previous life was spent in small enclosures at pet store. Now he loves it. When he comes out for exercise he'll take turns running in his wheel and running around the cage. He's a runt dwarf. Half the size of a normal dwarf. Very small. The cage is like 6 feet long. He has variety for his runs and he loves that. It's so fun to watch him run around. There are different objects in there too that he can climb and jump from as he runs around. He's really a happy little guy.

You know, a lot of things were said in this video that I quite frankly didn’t think was ever going to be said. Such as “your in my mini fridge” and “stop walking through walls”

Absolutely fantastic video to demonstrate a enclosure for anyone who has or getting a pet, so much respect for you in the care and welbeing you have for your pets .. animals in general (fur babies) so funny how the cats get involved especially the black one sitting in the toilet square and trying to blend in with the black t.v .. you should do an out take video as you have a great sense of humor. Have a great day x

At first, in the very beginning it looked like the square she was sitting in was the size of a good hamster cage….LOL

i used to work at a big pet store chain that sold hamsters, luckily the location i worked at was next to a home depot so I'd always inform customers that hamsters need much more space than any of our cages provided (bc literally every single one was too small) and i even explained how it was cheaper to buy and make a bin cage than it was to buy one of our tiny over priced cages. It sucked because many customers simply didnt care.. but i always tried nonetheless

I remember I made so many mistakes when I first got my first hamster Peaches (dead now, I'm on my second hamster, Sweetie). I had gotten her a Crittertrail (biggest cage they had but still too small what the heck) and was using a hamster ball. There were some truly horrible and potentially deadly mistakes that I never made, such as type of bedding and I thankfully never got her wet but still, you literally made that hamsters life better in the end. Now I'm reusing the new cage for Sweetie and I've got her a playpen and I'm planning on getting her toys. Every hamster deserves a good and happy and fun life.
