Yeah I watched a man play Zelda ocarina of time totally blind! He did have help in the past but he learned all out it. He used his sword like a walking stick to tell what is near him, the vibration of the stick could tell him different things. He also had some 3d speakers to help him navigate, it all really inspires you. I would love to know how to program, I would love to build a game like that but for the blind. Imagine utilizing all of those devices really well! There is also touch pads like on the ps5 and the switch too. The switch and Ps5 made their vibration controls even more sensitive and that tech. could work great with blind gaming. Just imagine! They also need those vibration controls available for ps4 as well.

Hey! I'm almost 23 and I'm going blind due to a really weird vasculitis in my eyes. I finished college a few months ago and I was really scared about this whole blind situation and my future. What could I do if I can't see well? What was the point of learning new things or trying to find a job? ... It was getting pretty dark but I recently found your channel and other blind people channels and now I feel a lot better, I'm still scared but I think it'll be okay, so I really want to thank you for your sharing your experience and inspire me. I found this video because I had the random thought of "Can a blind person actually successfully play Pokemon?" and just had to search it up. Now it absolutely amazes me that it's even possible to do so. I know about all of the sounds like the music for each area/town/cave/route/battle and all, the individual cries each Pokemon has would also probably indicate who you're using, but I would think it would be so hard to like fully learn everything if you can't see it. Like item usage, character dialogue, knowing your levels, moves, natures, abilities, all that. So much about Pokemon is visual and so I couldn't personally imagine it even being possible for a blind person, but damn. Human nature and ingenuity just continues to amaze me to this day lol. I absolutely love Pokemon myself and I'd love for so many others to play it despite what disabilities they might have, the experience is just so fun.

The pushback is complete bullshit. These guys are "purists" and insecure, completely taking away the fun _for themselves,_ along with those who would be unable to play due to the barriers. Instead of having fun playing with more people, happy that they're playing against or with more people, or being happy that there are more people able to experience the game (and more importantly the full experience of the game, not just the beginning before things get difficult), they're upset that people are getting help (they think cheating) and not experiencing the "magic of the difficulty of the game", and that kids are going to be "fake high-level" that they didn't work for or don't deserve, that type of shit. They don't think about people who need help to play at all, or help to make it enjoyable, whether they need it or just want it. It's total nonsense.

Nice narrative, too bad its flawed af. Games have been getting easier, but more importantly longer and more annoying tutorials have become commonplace. Unskippable tutorials that tell you "press x to jump" make the experience way worse for those that don't need to be told that. Accessibility or making game easier as an option is the go to method, but so many games have things that make them easier not as options but as default. Easy difficulties that require little to no thought or effort from the player are often defended as "making the game more accessible". They don't. Options do. When people complain about games being too easy or handholdy, that's often what they're reffering to: games being too easy with no way to change that, telling things to the player that many already know and other things of this nature.

From an aspiring Game Designer's perspective, this is extremely valuable! We're not disabled in terms of vision blindness per se, but eye fatigue is a huge problem with us since many of us have severe photosensitivity. Sound design and color design is imperative to me especially, if you can boil down the assets of the game to simple readable objects that can communicate essential information in a snap no matter the "clutter", that makes a much better designed game... period. Also, to anyone that's also a game dev: let's make this thread a toolkit for people to reference! From dev advice not listed in the video (or listed in the video with timestamps) to things like dev related plugins for game engines, sky's the limit. Right now, I want to find a good screen reader that can be implemented in Unity for RPG dialogue text. Have at it! -Azure

Also I play emulators on my computer because an advantage of playing on emulators on your computer is you can enlarge the window of the program that your using if you are low vision like I am. I am not totally blind but I am somewhere in the legally blind range, I have always had poor sight from birth, I played video games when I was younger and then I had some more sight problems so I stopped playing most things, my grandma got me a Wii because at the time it was a console I could see and it had games that I could play at my own page and use movements instead of a controller and I loved it. I eventually started doing more things with technology so built myself a computer (since then I have built more PCs and servers) and started playing PC games. I still struggle with things like trying to play a fps, but I have been enjoying games like Final Fantasy XIV (the mmo) for years now. I find this is an amazing game accessibility wise as you can fully adjust your entire UI, I do still find that I struggle to read some of the enemy moves (which some friends will help with in Discord) most of the time you can just go through remembering the fights. I recently got myself a Nintendo Switch, I really enjoy playing on this as with the zoom feature I can play pokemon in handheld mode, although I find that I take a lot longer to play it when it isnt connected to my TV. (I cant use it in handheld for long because even with the zoom I get really bad chronic migraines) I now have a playstation, xbox, switch, and my PC, and this gives me such a huge library to pick and choose what I can reasonably play. In more recent years I have been dipping my toes into game developement, as well as building websites and working with databases etc. One day if I do manage to make a video game I hope that I can make it as accessible as I can make a website (or as close as possible). I have played some games that are completely audio, and while some of them are alright, I do prefer struggling my way through normal titles.

Sure there is that warning on games, but they need to do more than that, like say instead of flashing the screen maybe just an icon would appear. I know Vr headset are suppose to big enough for glasses, but what if there was a way you could input your prescription, and the goggles would adjust, could reduce the amount of squinting. After watching your video today im happy theres some ways for blind people to play. However i feel like it could be better. Companies make all kinds of games why not make games basically designed for blind people, and not just low budget games but full on AAA games designed with the blind person as the target audience. The future of gaming needs that. It dosent even need to be that they make the game only for a blind person they could even just hire internal teams of people to take their game and just make a version that is able to be plaued by a blind person, same game just tweaked to allow more people to play. I mean just imagine the possibilty if say a zelda game was made then a team took that game and made it able to be played by a fully blind person.

I don’t like overly difficult games, it takes me off the journey when I keep struggling to get past a single puzzle, boss or whatever. And normally, when that happens, I just search for help on the internet, and I believe a lot of people do that, and that puts me really off with the game’s world. One thing I also hate is when devs give you the opportunity to make the game easier, but remove things like achievements. Why do they do that? Why do we have to feel bad for playing easier??? I know some games have the high difficulty as an aesthetic, but you shouldn’t force people to play the game the way YOU want them to play.
@nictheartist

I totally agree. It's one thing having a bit of a challenge and just getting plain stuck because you have no clue how to proceed due to the obstacle presented. Trying over and over and over is all very nice when you have all the time in the world, but, at least as a proper grown-up, you occasionally need to stuff like Go To Work. Life is too short to get frustrated over an overly complicated game. I like the traditional story mode games, where you have chapters, so you can just save your progress and do another chapter some other time.

Then don't buy hard games just like you shouldn't be forced to play hard games. You shouldn't makes people make easy games if they don't want to. As far as achievements go very rarely have I seen devs completely turn off achievements for lower difficulty unless you cheat. Why do you deserve a participation trophy if you couldn't even beat the game at the intended difficulty with proper balancing.

@@austinblackburn8095 Well, I present to you: handicapped people. It's all about being accesive for everyone. Do you really think someone with hand or coordination difficulties can perform the same way a healthy person can? Cause they can't, and so they probably won't be able to appreciate the game. But even though that is a major part, it is only a part. The community in general tends to be presumptuous when they see that someone played a game on Easy. Look at gameplay videos, there is such a small percentage of youtubers that play games on easy, and MAYBE that's because they feel afraid of being judged and disliked. It's toxic and no one addresses that. I know that, maybe, the majority likes the challenge of playing games on average or hard. But I don't, and I feel pressured to play them on, at least, average, because all my life I had people showing me and telling me that easy is for loosers, or something. Nowadays I've been battling this emotion, and I constantly play my games on easy for the first playthrough, because I want to enjoy it. If I like the game and want a bigger challenge, because I probably know how the game works and the levels, then I put it on average or hard. That is my healthy way of playing my games. And I'm happy about it.

the way people see assist modes for the most part sort of forget people with disabilities because its often shown or pitched as a access feature and more as a way to experience the game in an easier manner that really wasn't intended, a game should ideally be able to ramp in most people willing to play it and then when they get to the point where they can work up and get to playing the actual game they'll be ready. The problem there is that they don't see that videogames do that. Of course that's the less jerkwad and the portion that pushes back that I can understand, more "I'm not sure if a difficulty slider on dark souls makes too much sense" kind, one that you could probably explain enough to and you can reach an understanding with. Admittedly you could say to some extent I feel it with people inexperienced with monster hunter (not disabled people, more options is better and they should help with that, I would be rather happy to see more people being able to enjoy the game and monster hunter definitely needs to work on that) there's a sort of tough love thing with that, we will help you understand the game, heal you, contribute a bit on damage, and help you get better weapons and armor that you could already get in game. But if you don't eventually get to the point where you can take done the great jaggi by yourself then it's going to be an issue for you, because later on it might feel frustrating and not all that fun at all, it'll feel like you are contributing nothing. A sort of tough love because we want people to enjoy and experience the game, and we wouldn't be all opposed to things that'd help people out (maybe a small few annoying people with a *git gud* attitude) like more monster they can fight more ways to learn or ways to make it easier on new people, but we don't want to hard carry someone every step of the way and the best place to learn is probably at the start. edit:noticed i said we, in short that's how the community felt to me, I haven't played monster hunter with random people for quite some time but generally everyone tried to help newcomers even if it's not exactly going to do as much as might be needed for some people. It might be different now that the lobbies are so large, less chat with everyone doing their own thing and no way to specifically go to a lobby with someone who might even be specifically looking for newcomers. I suppose you could also say maybe we are standing in for developer assistance in a sense, but Idk there's a few ways to view a lot of things the other portion feels like its giving out participation trophies to inexperienced people which is just BS, they don't really care at all about making the game accessible to as many people and just want to feel accomplished. It's pretty annoying honestly, I get "easy mode" undermines your sense of accomplishment by why not just enjoy beating it on expert? that's the point of a difficulty slider, that's the point of personal restrictions, if someone isn't doing those things live with it, an extra person got to enjoy it and might want to play the more difficult version that should be a good thing. there should be more options for a lot of games as well as ways to help more people actually play it. is it different from what the developers intended, yes but not only is it something you can't really help at all, but if you are clear enough and implement things well enough you can probably get pretty close if not manage to actually accomplish to ramp into the intended experience. Though for some it's going to need some specific innovation unfortunately, in addition to measures that have and haven't been thought of yet. The next part is just me rambling honestly, it's more so a way to helped inexperienced and not specifically disabled people because this whole thing sort of generated ideas. what if you could go through a portion before the main game that could help someone play around in 3d space, lets say darksouls, go through some kind of backstory-ish segment or soul wandering before the first area, get just a few things of lore and used to how the game works in general, optionally, before you drop in. You can do something similar to that one person who made a shooter for beginners too if they want as an extra option, have them figure out entirely how things function in 3d space. From there maybe add a key that lets you go through more areas to practice in, or an item that lets you have access to those areas from the start, (yknow a bit like the skeleton key in ds1) in case dying in the start and learning how to play from that experience and the extra tutorial before it isn't quite enough, a place where you can feel like you can make progress instead of throwing yourself at the first boss, that and even after the first boss. progression items can vary depending on the part of the game and what is best, and you can actually learn the game some more while still passing through the main game. There is of course flaws to this approach, especially monetary because there are simpler solutions, but having it be organically in the game will enable it to ramp into the main game and at least for some games it can be better than raw numbers, though having both is a welcome option, one which will unfortunately be met with some degree of opposition unfortunately, but a welcome option nonetheless.

Can you tell Konami to make their Yu-Gi-Oh games blind accessible please. I’ve reached out to them multiple times with no response via email and their customer service guy questioned why I would want to play that game if I’m blind.

Hey James, if I’ve already asked you this, I’m sorry about it. Are you going to CSUN? If so, I will see you there. I thought maybe you might be in the gaming part of CSUN.

For me, the video game nodding community helps a lot. As we experienced the more games become realistic the harder it is to play. Being able to find mods that change lighting, textures, items, sounds and actions. Really help me stay in gaming. I stopped consol gaming all together., which was sad. PC games have become a staple.

Not visually impaired, but aspiring developer. Really interested in the whole topic and the community behind this. Any way to help? maybe write guides for certain games? Is there a subreddit for visually impaired gamers where I could find a way to help you guys out? (I know you promoted the pokemon subreddit on an older video, but I don't really play pokemon games anymore atm, so I was wondering if there are maybe other games where I can be of assistance)

When I started out playing video games I played on a PS2 and then moved to a PS3 around the release of PS4 to this day I still have the PS3 and that's all I have I mostly enjoy playing Minecraft on the PS3 met some friends and I used to play GTA along with some other games my eyes deteriorated during the past two to three years it was was pretty bad before but now I can't play GTA minus the fact that the silvers are shut down I've always wanted to get a computer and game on there but after the deterioration of my eyes I never bought my PC I saved up for it but I'm too scared I won't be able to see on it thus I could waste my money let's say I do get the PC then I'll be too scared to purchase games because I won't know if I would be able to see them

Accessibility in gaming has improved a lot this past generation and only getting better. There is a growing active community around it too to keep everyone in the loop. At the same time, I love how Steam has a great refund policy. A lot of disabled gamer friends of mine tend to return a game if it's inaccessible without an issue.

Well I don't think things are that great. I am almost blind7low vision and there are some games that have more accessibility options but in general I am not thrilled. I mean 10 years and game devs finally accepted colorblind mode as a standard. Well gotta take what they give us, Microsoft is ok in terms on their apps.

I am extremely low vision/legally blind. I have to sit in the dark most of the time as light is causing my legal blindness to gradually turn into total blindness. I use an eye patch on the left eye but I am so into video games that I still play them. One of my favorite games to play is City Of Heros (Its been back for a couple years now) The auto target option allows me to set follow on my team mates and attack the enemies in missions. The experience points are not based on who hit the enemy, but applied across the whole team. The community is super nice and friendly and there are multiple options for low vision. It allows you to play in what ever style you want to play and the grinding is pretty tame. You can walk around the town and pick off baddies in small groups or you can go into missions for higher level enemies. Items that need to be found have a noise associated with them that gets louder and clearer the closer your character gets to it. GTA V is another game i like, the contrast in colors and brightnesses make it fun to play car races on (I am honestly more entertained at my crashes on the stunt races. but more than that it gives me a sense of driving. I would love to see games become more and more accessible, I think the B/LV community would be very loyal customers.
