Regardless of whether one believes in divine intervention, this is a philosophy that all schools and churches should teach. We should stop pointing fingers and comparing our own lives to that of others and realise that we are all responsible for our own happiness and our own meaning in life. Non-creationists and creationists alike should first and foremost have faith in themselves. God helps those who help themselves, after all.

***** It is a tough way of viewing life because he is saying we create meaning in our life rather than our life has a purposeful meaning. You cant fall back to this theory. Religion has a practical use.
@MelioraCogito

Bingo Heart WTF? Why would you think that creating "meaning in our life" is any different than having a "purposeful meaning"? Is it NOT sufficient for you to cognitively embrace the depth of understanding that for a purposeful meaning in life to exist, YOU (and you alone) have to ACT to create that very meaning and purpose? Why do you succumb to the need to have someone else tell you what your purpose is? WHY are you so weak willed not to seize upon the opportunity itself, given to you by LIFE itself? Seriously, give you head a shake. The MEANINGFUL PURPOSE of [your] life is to CONTRIBUTE - in whatever way your natural gifts permits you to do so. Stop creating a meaningless life for yourself here and now, worrying your pretty little head over your afterlife salvation - IF it exists (and that is a huge IF) it won't be presided over by someone else's fantasy of a grey-bearded white-guy dispensing his hate-filled justice on everyone. You are the UNIVERSE manifest conscious. Explore yourself. Add to your understanding of yourself. Stop wasting time waiting following someone else's myth-god telling you how it's going to be. You get one crack at life. Once its over, you're done - no reruns, no syndications - it's over. The lights go out, the curtain falls and everything fades to black. End of a chapter. Question is, do you want your chapter to add value to the story of life or be responsible for holding it back?

It's tough because you believe it is and perceive the world in that way. I see just the opposite. The video is pretty self-explanatory. When you said "Religion has a practical use". Practical how? Religion is the belief in a deity that can't be seen, heard or touched. What is practical about that?

I am an atheist but I believe there is a meaning of life in the universe. The question is when will life make an effect on the universe? That is when life has populated every possible planet in the universe and need more planets to live on. Then life need to ignite big planets to get sun light to new planets. Imagin when life in the universe start to ignite planets and see how the universe light up of all the new stars in the sky. A star turns matter to massless photons. And that is why the universe created life. Master of Science in Engineering Physics Magnus Ivarsson

Do you honestly believe the universe is a conscious being that created life with the purpose to create more life and then die? And you think the faith in gods is nonsense?
@GameReality

Jupiter's Cock When the universe was created in the big bang it have since then been starting stars and stars is turning matter in to massless photons. I believe life was created to help the universe to ignite stars. Because matter is not a normal state. Nothing is a normal state and that is what stars do.

I have nothing but respect for Stephen Fry but the definition of Humanist isn't just the ideology of someone who discredits a connection to the universe waiting to be discovered, aka the religious. Because even someone that does believe in a god who has created mankind for a purpose can still exhibit the same principles of a humanist. Just look at the theists who're fighting for gay marriage. Theists who are concerned about the well being of all humans because it is a reflection of who they are and not for afterlife brownie points. I'm not religious but even I know that religious people also discover themselves through living life regardless if they end up feeling that who they've become was somehow predestined.

"Too bad humanism doesn't stress helping others.." Really? And you're an authority on humanist thought are you? [facepalm] As for the part on "watching soap operas." If someone has the inclination to live (waste) their life watching meaningless drama, who are you to judge them? I'm sure you too have your own meaningless peculiarities which waste your precious time while on earth.

I think this video stresses that a balanced person finds meaning in many activities, some altruistic, some indulgent, some serious, some whimsical. MLK loved fishing, Gandi played cricket. Carl Sagan loved sci-fi movies.

David Dwayne Gresham You’re too funny. Really you are. 1) My “credentials” on being a human(ist) are no different than your own or anyone else who has lived on this planet for whatever duration you/they have (for myself that means >50 years), watching and observing human behaviour (while consciously reflecting upon one’s own), marvelling in ALL of humanity’s creative magnificence or horrified by its sadistic barbarity towards one another and the planet. As a “humanist” I try to remain constantly mindful of being respectful, courteous and helpful to those I encounter along the path I walk regardless of who they are. I also realize (with conscious pragmatism) that I cannot *save the world* from itself-not all of it and most certainly not on my own. I can have a positive effect of those I encounter along my journey and in a small way, on my local community in the choices I make (like staying the hell out of Walmart and supporting locally owned retailers). Humanism is not simply about taking a course in a “Humanities” programme at some college or university. It’s about being consciously aware of WHO you are, WHERE you are and HOW you’re going to conduct yourself in the limited time you have here on the world stage - even if your audience consists only of your family, friends and work colleagues. 2) I never suggested the video didn’t say “watching soap operas,” I merely questioned WHY YOU would choose to focus on such a small part of the larger dialogue-three words (

Unfortunately, the way this is presented is making fun of the believers ; though you can be a "humanist believer" as well. As if believers don't think that there are different tastes and preferences in life, that they can't live for their families, that they can't be in deep connection with art, and that they're not looking for happiness. I feel this video is somewhat insulting to me as a believer and all the others out there.
@CakeTastey

Watch the video again. It never suggested that believers *don't* have different tastes or have deep connections with art, ect... It's making the point that belief in the supernatural is not necessary to have a fulfilling life or to enjoy ^[the above]. Believers AND nonbelievers can enjoy life-- no god, magic, or faith *required*.

Just pay closer attention. He starts by saying "Some people think there is *one single meaning of life* [...] and that the universe is part of a *larger cosmic plan*", notice the tone first. Secondly, look at the graphical aspect. The persons who are implied to be believers are drawn in a childish cartoony way, while everything else isn't. Furthermore, why do you think there's a distinction between the green writing and the red writing? Like a professor correcting his student... Thirdly, those people he's talking about obviously are believers, but the way he puts it is completely mistaken. If you take into account all the embedded subtleties, the whole thing really sounds like this : "Some people believe in crazy stories, but others have a humanistic view about life". The mistake is precisely the confusion between all those personal "meanings of life" and a bigger picture that covers and embraces all of them for believers, which he arrogantly smashes by saying "There - is - no - one - big - meaning - of - life".
