Sarah Webb asks: If colorism starts at home, then where does it end? In this honest and vulnerable talk, she explains an important lesson learned as she healed from her own heartbreak, and how she became a global advocate for ending colorism-a system of oppression that privileges lighter skin tones. Dr. Sarah L. Webb is an Assistant Professor in the department of English and Modern Languages at the University of Illinois Springfield. She launched the website Colorism Healing in 2013 to raise awareness and create change. Since then, she has reached thousands of people across the globe through her international writing contest, publications, and workshops. Dr. Webb believes wholeheartedly in the transformative power of courageous storytelling. Her mission is to create spaces for the authentic expression of collective voices. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
