Travel does not really matter all that much, geometry is more important. Back in the day, a 100-120mm bike was a XC bike with awful, road bike geometry, whereas a 180-240mm of travel was basically the same, but higher up and a slacker head angle, but not by much. Nowadays, we have more aggresive angles and comfortable bikes on which to attack a local trail. I would be more than happy to have a Spark, although, I would change the bars immediately for something with 40-50mm of rise. Top notch video!

It seems like 120mm, even a full suspension with 100mm is a LOT when riding most trails as mountain biking tires provide a lot of give as well for most trails. But if riding huge downhills and you have pro jumping skills, 100mm probably feels like you’re riding a road bike.

I do that with my 100mm hardtail so yeah, it is more about the rider than the bike, still, there are limits and it also doesnt make sense to bring a knife to a gun fight, but a double suspension 120mm should do almost anything, just not as fast and comfortable as a long travel enduro bike, and not as fast and efficient as a full on XC bike, it is somewhere in the middle.

It’s almost like people in the UK forget that 120mm is actually 5 inches of travel!! scotty on a bike with 5 inches of travel will destroy any one of us in almost every situation anyway so let’s take him out the equation 😂 I ride a 130mm Santa Cruz 5010 and while I might not be as quick down stoning as on my dh bike, it can still do it! I’ve never once wished I had more travel! (extra few degrees in the head angle at some races would’ve been nice) but I don’t know why everyone’s travel obsessed and thinks more is better? less travel would probably make most UK riders better! the amount of people in the UK with 160-70mm forks etc and then wonder why they can barely bunny hop 🤷🏻♂️

I can say this: I have a 2021 Carbon YT Capra Super-Enduro with 170/180mm travel (Rockshox Boxxer front and RS coil shock) and I have also completely rebuilt my old Scott Spark RC 2016 (a superfast 27,5 XC-bike, originally @ 100mm) to be a Mullet Downcountry trail/mini-enduro with a 120 mm shock and 150mm Fox 36 fork in front. I believe that on most Enduro stages here in Sweden I am actually faster on the Spark! It´s just on the most gnarly and steepest descent that the Capra is faster (like DH-stages). But on an whole enduro race, considering 20% uphills, 30 % pretty flat and 50% steep to really steep descents, I thinkt the Spark comes out on top. It really is extremely capable!! After the upgrade the HA angle sits smack on 64 degrees wich is really great for almost all Enduros over here. The only thing I hesitate to ride is huge drop to flats (like 4-5 feet and over) but generally you can roll those instead. Dropping/jumping big when the landing incline is negative is no problem since the angle takes care of the travel. I think a lot of racers would actually be faster on less travel bikes since you can catch up a LOT of time on all pedally sections, and you really dont lose out to much going down. Thinking of selling the Capra ;-)
@ScottyLaughland

You should try the all new 2022 Spark, 130/120 and modern geometry now that is a fast as bike… I’d agree with you on the bigger hits that it struggles but it’s not what it’s designed for. The bigger bikes and their more progressive shock curves do make a difference here…
