Tbh it was rushed during the pandemic. But Atavista is the finished product we got. While fans say 3.15.20 is better, Atavista is actually. Yes there were some transitions and a couple of songs that aren’t in the newer version, but I honestly think what we have now is what he intended to be for 3.15.20. Plus Feels Like Summer is old, so he probably felt it shouldn’t be in the new one.

Technically you’re still kind of right because he said he’s releasing Atavista which is the finished version of 3.15.20 and then he’s dropping a soundtrack to a movie he’s making called Bando Stone & the New World. I’m really hoping that the soundtrack will be similar to Because the Internet where that was basically made as the soundtrack to the script he wrote back then.

I really love 3.15.20. I think it's been the only album by childish gambino that has this weird unfinished feeling. The songs feel a little incomplete and the production is a little weird. But all of that adds to the overall experience of the album and makes it stand out. It's like an unfinished puzzle that you just have to put together.

The royalties he gets from “Atlanta” will keep his family wealthy for generations. You’re confusing someone who makes music for money. He makes music because he likes it. I promise you he doesn’t care if it hits or not because it was made on his own time.

I think the timing had nothing to do with the album performing badly. Looking back, artists who dropped their albums in 2020 might have missed out on money in the short run, but with everybody having to be at home, ultimately ending up on the internet, the first lockdown was the best time to have fresh new music out. If he had just promoted the album in some way, it would have performed so much better. Look at the Weeknd and Taylor Swift. 2020 were both major release years for them and now they are the two top artists of the world

It's a fantastic album. Part of the thing with him and Kendrick...I think they're artists who have mainstream success but do what they want so straddle that mainstream/indie line in a way that appeals to and subsequently pushes away both crowds at once each time they put out an album. This was the same thing with Voir Dire (although Earl doesn't have the mainstream success as Gambino). All said the album was fantastic and I'll never say an album an artist themselves loved was wasted. Honestly the opposite.
@Y0urOn1yFreND

I honestly think that the album wasn't very good at all. I think that is what the general public also believed. If you leak an album for all to hear and then 75% of people don't come back, that says something to me haha. At the same time we can say "it flopped" all we want, but clearly this was a deliberate plan.
