Most Hongkongers were refugees fleeing the Chinese Communist Party when they took over China in 1949 or their parents were. Many refugees such as Jimmy Lai started from zero and became millionaires because Hong Kong offered them a totally different environment than Communist China namely, rule of law, freedom of speech, free flow of information, freedom of press.....

the special administrative region status will not be ceased because the chinese communist party needs another jurisdiction where they can do business (whether clean or not) with outer world... it is too hard to change the mainland laws to fit the world standards, and hong kong is just small enough to control by themselves. however the freedom is dead already, and elections are not well functioning, the promised democracy is missing - that's why hk people are leaving their homeland even though they love hk so much

I have friends fled from HK, but also have ones migrated to HK. It is a super complicated and dynamic situation, due to the reasons introduced in the video. It is hard to say it is going to be good or bad for the HK as a city. But for the traditional HKers and the outside world, the HK they remember has lost. HK today is a new city, will have new residents and traditions. To me, I think HK is likely going on the same path as Xinjiang, the conflicts between traditional HKers and new immigrants could seriously undermine the city on many aspects

It originated from the extradition law (which emerged from a HK man who killed his girlfriend in Taiwan). This caused fear, because this may also cause HKers getting extradited to Mainland (if someone got killed in Mainland) which also has capital punishment. Therefore, it originally had got nothing to do with Mainland, but soon the peaceful protest got co-opted by far right HK nationalism and the HK local government cannot contain the situation, unlike other democratic contries, where people gets arrested (or even killed) from illegal or unregistered protests like Germany or USA). So since they are unstoppable, this continued for a whole year until covid struck. And starting July 2020 the CCP also put out the new Nation Security Law, which was heavily critized because the situation has got out of hand in HK. But the media just doesn't care about the cause, it just wants to paint a bad image of China regardless, because a bad image of an authoritarian regime is an easy target, without considering what really happened.

I used to avoid going to Hong Kong, because as someone grew up in China mainland and I'm not a Cantonese speaker, I was never welcomed in Hong Kong. The local would randomly attack me just because im a Mandarin speaker. But honestly, I've been living in Australia for more than 20 years and my citizenship now is actually Australia. To me, HKers just generally hostile towards any Mandarin speakers 😂 and i don't blame them because they were influenced by the western media propaganda especially the younger generation. Remember, The loudest ones on social media are not going to represent the majority of hong kongers. Now I actually just booked my trip to hk because finally I don't have to worry about being attacked by those activists anymore and hk feel safe again.

I take issue with the anchor keeping saying "rocked" by 2019 protests. Protests didn't rock the economy, it's the government which suppressed people's desire for freedom, democracy and equity that leads to the irreversible downfall. Shame on the anchor

I see nothing political in Hong Kong. There's no rulings or commands to follow Beijing. Hong Kong salaries are much higher, opportunities although not as good as 2000-2010 is still good. If you work hard you do well. It is one of, if not the most expensive city in the world.
