In the movie "Ever After" (1998) my favorite line comes at the end. Without spoiling why, Cinderella comes to the defense of her step mother and sisters to save their lives, but says "May they receive the same kindness that they showed me" and their faces showed they understood their fate. They were shipped off to the new world to live as indentured servants for the rest of their days. Provided with food and shelter, but made to work. Treated exactly as they treated Cinderella.

There is this Czech movie version of Cinderella, I think in English it's called "3 hazelnuts for Cinderella", in it a few elements of Grimm and Perrault's version is included, some of it like the doves helping her pick lintels and ash, and other elements like "the first thing that falls on his nose", you can find it on youtube I think, not sure if you can find it with English subtitles. And it definitely does prove that "Into the woods" got not just Cinderella, but Rapunzel and other stories almost to a tee! Fun fact: In Norway it's a tradition to watch the Czeck Cinderella movie every year on the morning of Christmas eve.

In the Disney movie, the stepmother’s eyes were never yellow until they released the movie on Blu-ray. That’s when they photoshopped yellow eyes on the stepmother, climbing up the stairs, and locking the door to Cindy’s room. I guess they figured the stepmother wasn’t creepy enough as is, so they made her look like she had jaundice.

I always liked Grimm’s version better because the visual of Cinderella and the Prince having their wedding while birds (I believe the version I read had crows, probably because crows seem scarrier than pigeons) pecked and tore out the stepsister’s eyes made for a very amusing bit of irony. They were both beautiful and vain, but now they are mutilated and blind so they cannot look upon their own disfigured faces. Also, a slipper made of gold just seemed to make more sense than a slipper made of glass, since gold can be made into threads and fabrics, and I can’t imagine glass would be very comfortable.

My country has a familiar tale which is kinda dark and long called Tam Cam and it goes like this: There’s a girl called Tam who is very kind, lives with her mother and father. It was a very simple life until her mom died. After that, her father marries again. Tam’s stepmother has a daughter named Cam. After a couple of years, Tam’s father died and her stepmother and Cam started to abuse her just like in Cinderella. Couple of years later, the stepmother told the two sisters to go search for small shrimps. Tam caught a lot of them while Cam slept. After realizing that she didn’t caught any, Cam decided to trick Tam. She told Tam that her hair was dirty and she should go wash her hair in the lake nearby. Tam decided to do that and Cam took all of her small shrimps.Tam quickly realized that her small shrimps were gone and she cried. A Bụt suddenly appeared and asked why she was crying. She explained everything and Bụt told her to look closely. There’s a big fish in there and Bụt told her to take care of it. But not long after, her stepmother and Cam knew about the fish and made it for lunch. Tam cried again and Bụt appeared asking why she was crying she explained everything and Bụt told her to bury her fish’s bones into some jars for future use. After more years, the prince needed a wife. Tam wanted to go to the ball but her stepmother forced her to solve the mixed suger and salt, if she completed the task, she can go and then they left. Once again, Tam cried and Bụt appeared. Bụt told her to take out the jars and it changed into her dress to go to the ball. She thanked him and went to the ball. The prince saw her, quickly fall in love with her and married her. Couple of years later, Tam had to go home and stay there for 4 days. One day,Tam had to climb up a tree to get some fruit. Out of jealousy and the obsession of her real daughter to be the prince’s wife, her stepmother grabbed an axe and chopped the tree Tam was climbing on and Tam died. The prince was devastated and Cam became the prince’s wife. Tam was reincarnated by Bụt into a bird. The prince discovered the bird and really liked it. Cam was jealous of the bird and decided to kill it. The prince was sad and something something Tam was alive again as a human, and the prince and she lived happily ever after. Oh and the stepmother received a “gift” from a crow which was sauce (mắm) and some meat. She was halfway eating the meal when the crow said it’s your daughter over and over again. The stepmother realized that she was eating her own daughter and committed suicide. THE END WOW what a great story.

There is a movie that is similar to the old (Grimm) Cinderella tale, but instead of being 1 story there is a couple of more fairytale stories stashed in there aswell (some of them has some Grimm plots aswell) It's called 'Into the woods' (it's apparently made by Disney, I don't remember well bc it's been a while since I've seen the movie, but nonetheless I recommend it)

When the birds tell the prince that cindy is the real one:Turn and peep, turn and peep, theres no blood with in the shoe, the shoe it isnt to small for her, the true bride rides home with you.(in german )=Ruckidiku, Ruckidiku, kein Blut ist im Schuh, der Schuh ist nicht zu klein ,die rechte braut die führt er heim.) slight correction: cinderella doesn't just leave for funsies in Grimm's version. while her sisters are fooled by the disguise, her stepmother is not, and leaves early, hoping to arrive home before cinderella, to punish her for leaving. cinderella runs away and only just makes it to the fire in time. the stepmother is still suspicious, but she thinks there's no way Cinderella could have beaten her home and is placated (at least until the next night, when she gets suspicious again)

They ate it and tyen they saw the head in the bottom of the barrel.

I also thought that the reason Cinderella's father didn't help her is because he didn't know what was happening to her. Because when I was probably 8 or something, I got the other version of Cinderella book. It has a similar story like the gold dress and shoes. The bird the tree were Cinderella obtain her gown and sleepers. And also when the prince devise a plan to find out who she is, and covered the stairs of the palace with pitch( I don't know what it's called, sorry) the only difference is, the stepmother didn't say to her daughters to cut off their toes. The story was so close to the Brothers Grimms.

But overall I've enjoyed the story, I also think the father was a narcissist knowing what happened after I read the original version of Cinderella ( I don't know, maybe it's original, correct me) Like this man didn't help or protect his daughter from the vile and evil stepmother and stepsisters.

I know this isn't relevant, but I thought it was nifty and couldn't think of another place where people might be interested to hear it, but I just had a dream this morning in which the original concept for nightmare before Christmas was that Dr. Finklestein was the antagonist, who in a graveyard steals a small child for his experiments, Jack and Sally having witnessed this development go about inserting themselves as private detectives for the family, presumably to keep them away from Halloween Town, while they go about recovering the child. At one point in the dream they go to meet with the father while he's at an emotional support group and it was just the most surreal non experience I've ever imagined, the guy looked so worn out and is just talking to talk while he fills a cup of water at a fountain, and all the while you know he's talking to a corpse who knows everything and he doesn't, it was just really weird and I needed to share that.

I think there was supposedly more to the brothers grimm story?(maybe it was another version i'm not too sure) I read somewhere that the stepsisters had maggots growing out from their blind eyes and died soon after. After the happy ending, cinderella got someone to put the gold shoes in fire, making it bright red. She then gave the shoes to her stepmother, who of course put the shoes on because cinderella is now the most wealthy daughter(also her only daughter left) and loves her very much now. But when the stepmother puts the shoes on, her feet are stuck onto the shoes and she was unable to remove them, the heat from the fire the shoes were thrown into making her feet hurt everytime she took a step. And the shoes, as if having a mind on their own, carried the stepmother into a dark forest where she...idk she either died or got her legs chopped off. I don't remember the exact details of this version, but it sounded really gruesome so it kinda got stuck in my head whenever someone talks about cinderella
