This group of students is climbing Mount Arapiles, near the western Victorian town of Natimuk for school camp.
It’s part of an outdoor education subject that one teacher from Geelong says teaches kids valuable life skills and sets them up for life after study better than other more traditional subjects.
Teacher Shelby Hackett says enrolments drop the closer students get to Year 12, because of increasing academic pressure ahead of final exams.
They say students who learn by ‘doing’ - and who benefit from being outdoors - drop the subject in favour for more academic ones, so they can qualify for university.
They would like to see attitudes change and outdoor education be valued more highly.
