Vintage magazines are probably my favorite items to collect outside of cards. The photos and advertisements are truly phenomenal! Love the way you connect your cards with the magazine covers... you have a gift telling stories and bringing history to life! Enjoyed this one Terry!

Thanks Josh! Magazines have been an exciting turn in my hobby. While I do buy some 30s and 40s cards here and there, my heart is with the baseball, football and hockey from the 1950s to the 1980s. Magazines have helped me learn and understand more about the players I collect, but they also deepen the nostalgic feelings. I picked up a magazine a few weeks ago that took me back to when I was six years old. I plan on sharing it in a future video. There are so many ways to enjoy this hobby without having to spend a lot of money. I hope all is well and that your enjoying the new house. Did you end up picking up the card you showed me?

Magazines are definitely a throwback to a different era. It’s how we gained information. I loved Baseball Digest as a kid as well as SI. I had no idea Earl Williams was so highly touted. High praise for Bobby Orr and of course well deserved! 27.1 yards/ catch!!!! Wow! There are quite a few overlooked receivers from that era. I’ve enjoyed watching your love for magazine collecting grow and hearing how it fits into your collecting hobby. Have a great weekend Terry.

Thanks Chris. The magazines can make collecting more enjoyable. I know they are not for everyone, but if you like to learn more about the era you collect, reading magazines can give you a contemporary perspective you won’t find in books or videos writing about the period from a historical collection. I doubt there are many modern books and articles talking about Earl Williams being one of baseball’s next superstars. I agree there were some great receivers in the 50s and 60s who few know about it. Have a great weekend.

Hey there. I recall having that George Brett SI. Thanks for that memory. Great concept to look back through a periodical and tell the stories of these players. One of the other things that I enjoy about old magazines are the advertisements. Those ads bring back a lot of memories. They have a way of placing me in a particular time and place. Great video.

Thanks Drew! That is a pretty popular SI cover given it's Brett's first. Pretty neat you had one growing up. There were a lot of cool advertisements in that issue as well. One was for collectible mugs featuring the NHL teams from the time to include the California Golden Seals and the Canucks with their old logos. You can learn things in magazines that you won't find anywhere else.

Great share here. Love seeing some 1973 Vida Blue. Blue has some nice images and the 73 Topps is one of my favorites of his. Nice Reggie Smith Gold Cup card. Love those 60s gold cups. The 1972 Reggie Jackson is another one of my favorites. His 1971 Topps is my all time favorite. The Garr action shot is a nice one. George Brett on the cover of the magazine. Definitely love the vintage magazines. They perfectly compliment the cards. Every single player has a story. The magazines help capture some of them. And the photography brings everything a bit more life along side the text. There's something to be said for items that tell these kinds of stories and don't require a USB cord to charge them.

Hello Terry. Got out of work early today and thought I would make time for a few hobby videos. I enjoyed your vintage sports magazines. That Orr is a sweet one. He was my favorite hockey player back in the day. Its nice how by going back to some of these magazine articles you can see just what was being written about players and the game.. I enjoyed your high grade 68 Reggie Smith card. When you showed your Ralph Garr card, it reminded me that he and I share the same birthday. For that reason and because he was a good ball player, he was also one of my favorites. Thanks for posting.

Hi Dan, that was a neat article on Orr. I don’t share what all the players said, but guys like Hull and Delvecchio showered praise but weren’t ready to call him the greatest. It makes sense. They have been around the league for a while and their words were more measured. The younger guys seemed in awe of Orr. One of the older guys, I can’t recall who at the moment talked about Doug Harvey and how he would bring the puck up and give it to the forwards where Orr played all of the ice. That to me is why he changed the game maybe more than anyone. Gretzky’s skills were incredible but he didn’t change the position like Orr did. His numbers were ridiculous for a defenseman. Cool you share birthday with Ralph Garr. He was a good player. You appreciate guys like him more when you look back at the magazines. I love that Reggie Smith card. It is my favorite of his. As always, I appreciate you taking a moment to watch and comment.

I can totally see how magazines can make for a better vintage cards collector. It really opens up the history and personalized the players featured in the card sets. These are great magazines Terry! That Bill Russell magazine is fantastic. And that rumble in the jungle, wow! I used to live when Beckett magazine would do articles on the next big players. It's really nice to look back on this after the fact and actually know how things went for the different players... Who actually were superstars and who weren't. Injuries sure can change the trajectory of some players. I love that Reggie Jackson card! And how about that pro football magazine... Thanks Brian! The magazines certainly add to the fun of collecting. It is a great way of acquiring knowledge that you may not find in books or magazines. I love many of the covers too. Jimmy Orr’s example shows you how football is viewed compared to baseball. Statistics in that era didn’t mean much. It was wins and losses. Quarterbacks were measured more by how they led their team vs. their numbers compared to their opponents. That is is the fun of it. Learning about the stories of how the players were viewed and what they did on the field to win games. There is a romance to those tales. I am glad you enjoyed. Have a great rest of the weekend.

Terry, I always love when you tie your magazines to your card collecting. Seeing those magazines brings me back to a time when I was younger and newspapers and magazines were how you learned about sports. I used to have SI and Sport magazine subscriptions, I wish I would have kept them. I remember having the Aii/Foreman SI, I was a big boxing fan and used to buy Ring magazine all the time. I thought it was cool looking at the article about which players were going to be the next great players. I remember Earl Williams, Vida Blue and Ralph Garr as young up and coming stars, it goes to show you just how hard it is to really put together a Hall of Fame career. I always enjoy hearing about teams that had players like Earl Morrel, Jack Kemp and Len Dawson on their roster but don’t know what they have and then those players go on to be great with other teams Absolutely love the Bobby Orr magazine, you know I am a big Orr fan, love that 72 Orr card! Always enjoy these videos of yours, also really enjoyed the favorite HOF card series you are working on with James! Take care.

Hi Steve, thanks for the kind words about the series that James and I started doing on favorite HOF cards. James sees cards in a way that I appreciate. He also does a fantastic job with editing and video presentation. I am looking forward to the next installment later this month. We are working on it right now. Boxing was great in that era. I am grateful that my father-in-law had copies of the Foreman/Ali and some others that I will share in the future on my channel. When you take the time to look at the magazines it makes you look at your cards differently. They can be nostalgic like you mentioned with the advertising and overall feel of the era that they represent. They also do a great job providing a contemporary view of athletes prior to their story being finished. I am glad you liked the article on the next superstars of the 70s. It is interesting to see how those players were viewed and with the exception of Reggie Jackson, how different their careers ended up going. Vida Blue, Garr and Reggie Smith were all very good players, but I don't think they reached quite the level they were predicated too. However, their careers were far from disappointing. I thought about you when I pulled out the Orr magazine and 72 Topps. I know you are a big fan as well. Listening to the players talking about him was fascinating. Especially, how the younger players revered him. The older guys like Delvecchio and Hull thought a lot of him, but they also played with Howe and Richard so their opinion was a little more measured. Thanks, my friend. Have a great rest of the Labor Day weekend.

I really enjoy hearing about your magazine collection. My eye wasn’t definitely drawn to the Bill Russell Sport magazine. The art of the Foreman/Ali is beautiful. My dad has kept every one of his Sports Illustrated’s. Like you said you can gain so much information about players, sports, eras, through these magazines. A lot of times the internet doesn’t even have the information these magazines have. The Ken Dryden/Bobby Orr was fantastic. I’m a believer you can tell the greatness of a player by what their opponents say about them. The Orr article proves that. I didn’t know how highly regarded Earl Williams was. I have his cards with my sets but that’s it. Jimmy Orr with averaging 27.1 yards per reception is crazy. Can you imagine why the fantasy buzz would be today about him? Interesting how Bobby Layne joined the Steelers. Was it coincidence that you featured Bobby Orr and Jimmy Orr in the same video? Great stories, Terry. I always appreciate it when you open the magazines and share some of the articles with us. Hope you have a great Labor Day weekend!

Hi Andy, It was a coincidence on Jimmy and Bobby Orr. Lol. They are no relation. I knew little about Earl Williams so that was an education. My brother had the 73 Topps Don Gullett when I was a kid, so I do remember him. Of course, Vida Blue was a very good pitcher. Really Earl Williams and Gullett would be the two that were never close to being stars let alone superstars. Hank Aaron comparing him to Johnny Bench is pretty hilarious in hindsight. I also read that he was never thought of as a very good catcher. He converted to the position to get playing time. So, not sure what Hank was seeing. I saw Jim Orr's average of 27.1 and thought the same thing. I still believe he is top 10 all time with a 19.8 career yards per reception. Being a Colts fan, you know how good a player he was. Not the fastest guy to be having a YPC that high. I am glad you enjoyed seeing the magazines and learning how they fit within in my collection. I really enjoy putting these types of videos together. Have a great long weekend!

Great synopsis of magazine collecting. I always liked having some around as display items but between adding a bunch to my cool from Jack and his dad and my conversations with you my appreciation is getting deeper. I love the slow turn in a collection when while the main focus stays the same some of the side focuses start to fade away or gain favor. By the way that Bobby Orr cover is outstanding. It’s interesting to me that as referenced in your article the debate of the greatest player is debated in three sports now Gretzky is primarily considered the greatest in hockey but only a decade before Orr had that distinction. To me that shows two things. First how great Gretzky really was and second that even at that high level there is still room for someone else to take that crown.
@tjmacvintagecardsnostalgia648
10 ай бұрын
Hey Drew, that is a good point about how some side collections enhance our primary collectons. Some do TTM, collect photos, autographs and/or other memorabilia. I used to like collecting the Salvino and Gartlan signed figures. I still have mine but there are only so many you can display so I stopped acquiring more at this time. I don’t want to clutter my space. I like how you incorporate different elements like magazines and signed photos into your displays which really bring your pieces to life. One of the good things about this community is seeing what others do and being inspired by it. I am glad you appreciated the beauty of the Orr cover even though you are not a big hockey fan. The simple white cover with the photo of Orr captures the feel of hockey. You’re right that Gretzky is widely viewed as the greatest. That is is a difficult question for me. Gretzky had the greatest career of any player, but he played in an era that was perfect for his talents. Had Orr played in the open ice 80s he would possibly stayed healthier as the 60s and 70s game was much more physical. There were players aiming for his knees to slow him done. He was like a Ferrari out there. Gretzky thrived on the style of play of his era where Orr COMPLETELY revolutionized his position. If only he had could have stayed healthy and played a little longer. To me, Gordie Howe and Bobby Orr would’ve dominated any era they played in because they were complete players. I don’t think Gretzky would. Anyway, probably more than you wanted to hear but I know you appreciate sports discussion. Have a great rest of the weekend!

Howdy TJMAC ! Great Show ! Like I said before, Magazines are like Giant sized cards with info inside. Who doesn't want bigger artwork with more great info that was written at the time it was happening ? I think Subscription labels on magazines are just like gum or wax residue on cards. It's part of collecting. The only reason a Sub label would bother me, is when it covers a main part of the photo, like on your Brett cover, the label covers the "R" on his uni. That to me is a big deal. There are some covers where a Sub label detracts to the point, that I would spend the money and buy one without the label. Unaware of Jimmy Orr, he was not on my radar. There are 2 teams my dad has no 49er programs from. We don't have any Steelers or NY football Giants. I love my 71 Kelloggs 3D Reggie Smith. Your 72 Reggie Jackson & Johnny Bench are such cool looking cards. As much as I regret selling all my topps baseball cards back in 1978, I really miss those 1972 topps, that design was right up my alley as a little hippie kid who was heavy into art. Actually 1972 topps is my fave year for all 4 sports. Great designs. The 73 topps just fell flat in comparison. Had near complete sets for all 4 sports in 73. I missed the cool cards by one year. Darn. Rookie of the Year was pretty much a meaningless title that did not translate into instant money or fame until recently. Great Show Terry. Love to see those mags, and the fact that they don't look like "rags" makes it even better. Looking at vintage items in good condition is a real treat as far as I'm concerned. Really like that Dell mag with the "mick" on it, really nice. I think SPORT mags have the best Covers. Take care.

Hi Tom, yes, the magazines are like giant cards. They truly tell a story one you up the cover. I agree with you on the subscription labels. If they are in a spot that does not impact the overall eye appeal of the magazine then it doesn't bother me as much. I don't like the vertical ones as on the Brett cover. I also don't like upside down horizontal labels. If they are from my father-in-law's collection, then I will definitely keep them. Fortunately, he doesn't have very many with the labels. The problem with it is so hard to find SI's that are newsstand. I have a save search and nice vintage ones don't come up often at a good price. You just need to be patient. Magazines are also a secondary part of my collection. I will likely always be a card collector first, but I do set some money aside for magazines. Funny your dad doesn't have the Giants or Steelers being he has so many programs. The Giants were good during that time. Pretty amazing that the Steelers had Unitas, Dawson, Morrall and Kemp on their roster at one time. I agree with you on the 72. It has both a psychedelic and classic feel with the raised theatre marque lettering. There really isn't a Topps set I don't like between 1956 and 1989. Yes, my father-in-law did take good care of his magazines. Especially, the ones from the mid 50s on. He was pretty meticulous with his stuff. I appreciate you sharing your thoughts.

Hey Terry. Yeah, love the old sports magazines, and always enjoy when talk about and show them. I used to have that Ali-Foreman issue. Wow, was that a shock when Ali won. We thought Foreman was going to destroy him. Very interesting commentary on Orr and who was going to be baseball's next superstar. I remember Vida Blue's first year. He was truly phenomenal that summer. A little off topic, and I know I'm not going to convince anyone, but I feel a differentiation should be made between a rookie card and a player's first card. The Steeler's really had good instincts about quarterbacks!
@tjmacvintagecardsnostalgia648
11 ай бұрын
Hi Gannon, the Steelers did have good instincts about adding quarterbacks. They just couldn’t keep them. As we know, they had Unitas too. Paul Brown missed on Dawson too. It took his old college coach Hank Stram to get the most out of Dawson as a pro. Ali was used to defying the odds. Foremen looked like a tank with boxing gloves. I think first card is better if it is after their second season. Especially, with football. There are guys that don’t have a card for several years. Though, it doesn’t really bother me. Rookie card is just hobby lingo. I think it is understood as being the first card even if it is several years later. Thanks Gannon!

Terry, I've actually started putting magazines as opposed to cards in my searches. How do you feel about magazines labels from another person on it? I haven't bought any yet but undecided to buy with the label and I wouldn't want to wreck the magazine by trying to take it off. I love boxing, even at it's current state. I think because it's a sport where it is represented by so many other countries around the world. Many of those Reds pitchers from that era had tremendous seasons but didn't last too long and Gullett was one. Not many players were allowed in Henry Aaron's inner circle and Ralph Garr was one of them, Dusty Baker being the other. Thanks for dropping some knowledge on us.

Hi Sammy! When it comes to magazines you have to figure out how you want to approach it. For me, I predominately collect newsstand copies because they don't have the subscription labels. They are not easy to find in nice shape and you have to be careful of sellers advertising them as newsstand, but the label was removed. There is nothing wrong with collecting magazines with subscription labels as long as you don't care about them likely ever having any real value. There are some exceptions, but that is usually the case. Sports Illustrated newsstand copies of certain covers are very collectible and can get expensive. I have occasionally purchased subscription magazines and left the label intact. When I do buy them, the label has to horizontal, right side up and in a spot that does not impact the aesthetic appeal of the cover. If you want some with the labels removed, they are usually available on eBay. Typically, sellers remove the labels on Sports Illustrated. Usually, you can see some sticker residue. It comes down to what you are comfortable with. The ones prior to the early 70s may have used a different type of glue and they don't look that great because they often don't come off without leaving paper behind. It is easier to find newsstand issues of Sport Magazine and some lesser-known magazines that didn't have as large of a subscription base. There were likely one to three million subscribers to Sports Illustrated and less than 100K newsstand issues made. I have heard 60 to 70K but I don't know if that is completely accurate. I am by no means an expert and have been learning from others. That is why I am careful what I say in my videos when it comes to magazines. I am a big believer in spending a lot of time learning from others before I decide to teach. I hope this helps some. Take care, Terry

Hi Terry: I watched this video on Friday and realized I never replied. Time for to confess something in watching this video which you probably strangle me for. I got my own bedroom when I was 14 years old. I always shared a room with my brother before that. I wanted my room FILLED with 8 x 10 sports photos. That Bobby Orr Sport Magazine I owned. I took out that 8 x 10 photo of Orr crashing into the Rangers net and posted it on my wall with about 80 other 8 x10 photos. My cousin had a massive magazine collection (all subscription) and gave them to me. A lot of 70s covers. It never hit me to tell you until I saw the Orr photo for the first time in about 40 years. Brought back memories of my bedroom for sure. This might be mean, but was Brad Park considered “The poor man’s Bobby Orr?” He was a great player for sure. The six top players, I remember all these guys well. The Orioles thought so much of Earl Williams, they traded Davey Johnson, Pat Dobson and Johnny Oates to get him. He just didn’t pan out. I am a big Vida Blue fan, just never got the full recognition. Don Gullett was a very bad man on the Reds. Just had a way of making everyone look bad at the plate. Injuries killed him sadly. I love Reggie Smith. Even on the Dodgers he was one of the best players but Steve Garvey, Ron Cey and Dusty Baker all received more attention. Ralph Garr won a batting title and got traded for Ken Henderson. Still shaking my head on that one. My memory of Jimmy Orr will always be him waving his hand/fingers in Super Bowl III letting Earl Morrall know he was wide open. I never knew he played for another team besides the Colts. You are the King of weaving in your magazine collection with your sports cards. I love it! Thanks Terry!

Hey Rick! No worries. I always appreciate you watching and taking a moment to comment. As you know, we all put time into our videos and it nice when someone takes a moment to share their thoughts. You made me laugh when I read about the magazines. Now if you were an adult and did that, I may have been upset with you, but I destroyed some magazines in my day to place my favorites in a scrapbook or on a wall. I am glad that the Orr cover brought back memories of those magazines. Hank Aaron and Lou Brock really thought Earl Williams was going one of the games top stars. The hitting I understood, but I did a little reading on him, and he wasn't highly regarded as a defensive catcher when he came up. He transitioned to catcher in the minor leagues. I didn't realize the Orioles gave up so much for him. Dave Johnson ended up having a huge home run season in 1973. I read that Reggie Smith was thought by some of his Dodgers teammates to be better than Steve Garvey. I believe it was Don Sutton who said it. Yes, Jimmy Orr waving in the endzone was a memorable moment from that Super Bowl. He also loved catching touchdown in the corner of the end zone. In Baltimore they called it "Orrsville." I appreciate the kind words, Rick. Magazines have been an inexpensive way to make collecting much more fun. Take care

A buddy of mine in elementary school got one of his relatives old SI's from the 60s, and he'd bring them to school and he'd let me read them. They'd pick the AFL and NFL winners, and the experts were wrong then as much as they are wrong now. Also always like reading about the players to watch for, and I'd read them as a kid and think who is this person?

Cool story. That is good to know they were not as accurate in picking teams back then. I am nit surprised. I used like watching Inside the NFL in the 80s and liked when Dawson and Buoniconti made their weekly picks. I would get upset when they picked against the Cowboys.

I'm happy I chose Canada, who will be Baseball's next superstar, nice Bobby Orr on the cover , in today's time period where the country has gone boring electronic Sports illustrated new stand issues depending upon the condition and the year are worth thousands of dollars? nice 1972 with Bobby Hull love the old skates, Ali vs Foreman I love your 3 cards 1972 Orr, Dryden and Gilbert Pearriult , from real Hockey teams Bruins , Canadiens and Sabres , Brad Park as a Ranger , I think what Alex meant in the 50's Howe is the best and in the 70's Orr was the best? nice 1972 Bench , 1973 Blue , 1976 Earl Williams I never heard of so he's a common , 1973 Don Gullett also played for the Yankees , I guess you can say Reggie Smith was an ok player 1968 , nice 1972 of Mr. October , Ralph Garr is a common so in your eyes Blue isn't a superstar was it because he had an e.r.a of 3.27 as opposed to if he had a 2.20 E.R.A would you think differently? or is he not a superstar in your eyes because of the quality pitchers he went up against Ryan, Seaver , Carlton , Palmer and Guidry, Hunter? so at 13:01 of your video they got 2 out of 3 right correct Blue and Bench but they got Williams wrong correct? Nice issue of Pro , nice Jimmy Orr ,Nice Len Dawson , Jack Kemp , so oof the ton of pitchers of all time what place would you put Blue in? Ralph Garr isn't Graig Nettles, Ken Singleton, Cecil Cooper, Jerry Remy , Ben Oglive , Chris Chamblis, Dave Kingman , Rusty Staub I would say Ralph Garr is more like Jerry Turner, Champ Summers, Barry Bonell, Fred Beane and Dave Duncan would you say? you can probably get better players than Jimmy Orr like Dick Butkus for about 20.00? maybe not his rookie but better player than Orr?

Thanks Mark! There are some many great cards and magazines from the 60s and 70s. I am glad you enjoyed many of the cards and magazines I showed in this video. You're right that Gullett played for the Yankees. I would say Reggie Smith was a star player. I read some of his Dodgers teammates thought he was better than Garvey. Vida Blue was a star player. What hurt him some is that he had such a huge season in 1971 that he was never able to live up to those expectations thereafter. He still had a career to be proud of and finished as a borderline HOFer. It is hard to know exactly where to place him, but in his era, he would be just below Seaver, Palmer, Carlton, Gaylord Perry and a few others. You could make a case he isn't too far off from Catfish Hunter I think Garr is better than those players that you compared him too, but and maybe a few of those that you mentioned in the beginning. He certainly wasn't better than Nettles, Kingman, Cooper and Staub. Regarding Orr, it comes down to collecting what you want. If you want to have some players that were very good, but not quite HOFers Jimmy Orr is a nice card to collect. I am sure you can get his other cards for price of a common even though he was an above average player. Have a great week, Mark.

@@tjmacvintagecardsnostalgia648 I would put Blue in the top 15 but as we know sometimes Mark makes mistakes but the way I see things he's top 15.
