Hey, Coach for Valorant here (I don't even play Much SSB, just watch content from time to time) however this is a really informative video! Really put into words well about understanding how to learn and improve instead of only copying (you should be looking for inspiration but not copying!) and it's a core part of my coaching to focus on this! Great content!

I was guilty of this when starting out. Copied from M2K's fox and only did retreating double lasers, nairs in place, etc. Took me a while to find my own style, but it felt liberating to form my own answers for situations instead of mindlessly copying from someone else

The first DruggedFox coaching session there was a Falco who was asked what option he could have done to approach except high dair. He said something like "Literally anything. You have every single other button to press. Try upair or jump shine. Then analyze why it didn't work."

try it and write it down if you can't remember! Then think of something else to do in that spot next time, you'll go back to the first thing you did a couple times but eventually you should be able to relearn!

Great video, this mentality problem is something I see a lot in mid level players - especially in Ultimate players who think their meta has to revolve so heavily around 'frame traps' (really just boiling down to option select). People think an interaction is solved and so they just shouldn't even bother, or the match up is solved and just straight unwinnable.

Yea it's usually a less extreme version of the 20xx argument "fox beats everyone if you can shine clank everything perfectly" That one is clearly ridiculous since that's faaaaaaaaaaar beyond human capacity but it's a good reference because similar types of exaggerations happen all the time and they really mean nothing until proven

This is such a hard callout against me. Over the years, my main goal wasn't to get better, but to "look" like a top player. I guess I'll start all over again from the basics, thanks.

Looking like a top player comes from a broad understanding of the relative value of options, not being particularly good at one small subset of the game In time you will look like a top player naturally

Damn this is SUCH good insight into how skilled players look at games and learning in general. Ive always been an advocate for finding the right balance between diligent, studious and focused training and knowing how to fuck around in the right moments, so its really cool to hear someone at a high level echo those thoughts!

It's pretty universal across all fields. It's just poorly communicated at large and I assume it's because the mass hypnosis that everyone has their own secret completely unique method sells better There are a ton of differences in the details but the broad strokes are the same

thank you 😭 can't believe i've been playing for so long, and never realized a bad gameplan i can execute, is better than a good flowchart i can't execute

Zain posted a clip of doing Marth's dsmash on tech-in-place and missed tech, and it was really fun to think about why that might be good or bad, not having heard him talk about it at all.

A good gameplan in melee is what ppmd says: "push them out then kill them". Too many players are all tech skill.

My biggest question as a player who's played for years but isn't what I'd consider good (I guess I'm a local gatekeeper?) is the process of trial and error and seeing what works/doesn't work. I've figured this out several times but not at a proficient level. I'm curious what the process is for someone that's risen through the ranks really fast. Like practice tech skill, play games, review games and see what went wrong, repeat. I don't really understand what exactly that looks like specifically
