When you empty a container like your oil container hold the container with the opening at least the top. It lets the air into the container and stops the glug glug glug because the air can get in easily. This applied to all containers. Have a Merry Christmas and a great year ahead with Fair winds and Smooth seas from South Australia Australia.

Merry Christmas, you should think of carrying a torque wrench, critical on engine bolts to be tighten. Its definitely the first step checking the anti syphon valve, then hosees. You should make sure your stern is not sitting lower than usual, especially when you ar underway. This can make your exhaust sit lower resulting in water exsesly backing nsk in, possibly more than the Anti syphon can handle. Yes never remove sn engine part with out having a new gasget . High temperature silicone does work, but the area must be absolutely clean.

Great video, remembering what it was like from our circumnavigation in the 1980s, presently sailing the Eastern Atlantic, headed for Brazil. My wife's book is a good one, published by Austin Macauley of New York, and available on Amazon, literally a fictional story of sailing and adventure: "Seychelle and the Cannabis Yachties". It is very entertaining, hoping you will give it a read and review.

Several comments 1st, pull the injectors, fill the crank case with kerosene, disconnect the run solenoid and spin the engine with the starter for a few minutes, Rinse and repeat. This is the method we used at the shipyard, never had a comeback. 2nd, “The Right Stuff” is the best RTV on the market, GM uses it to seal intake manifolds.3rd, are those the original engines, our Quasar had 3 cylinder Yanmars. We could have used the extra power. And, Merry Christmas 😊

Thanks for the tips! I hope it doesn't happen again but if it does we will be all over it! they are not the original engines, we can go a max of 9 knots under motor if we really don't care about how much fuel we use. its good to get you out of a bad spot, but most of the time we just have one on and we go about 6 knots.

If you can find a Toyota dealer , they sell Toyota engine sealant , its a silicone , clean all oil out of the valve cover and of the head , you can throw away the gasket or clean it and add a bead of engine sealer ,refit and let it cure wont leak Toyota uses it instead of gaskets

Came here to say the same thing. Toyota ultra black is the best sealant around imo. Also some of them rubber gaskets can be super glued in a emergency. Like where you cut a bit out you may have been able to super glue the ends together then Toyota black over everything

Did you find where the water came from? If it's fresh water/antifreeze, you may have a blown head gasket or cracked head. If it's sea water then probably the exhaust manifold is bad. Merry Christmas! 😎

Hello, not be a know it all, and I know this was 7 months ago, I have been working on Yanmar engines for a while, fact their some of the smallest diesel engines I have worked on, retired now, do have a boat, fact this is my second as far as sail boats go, both have had Yanmar engines, change the oil one time, after running her for say 10 or more hours, the water is out, unless you have a head gasket problem, yes you said salt water, on the bottom end, check your coolant tank to make sure your not gaining or losing coolant, if good there, keep sailing Mate, if ya ever in the states, Corpus Christi, Marina, for a short stay, look me up, we’re happy to help ya with any ya problem you may have, free, no charge, just because I love kitties, and y’all did good helping CoCo, so if ya ever around, let me help you, and I will do all the work, Cheers Mates

Merry Christmas guys ! 🎄 A good thing to check when changing the oil is make sure the old O ring came off with the old filter . Ask me how I know to check for this 😧 I blew a engine by leaking all the oil because I had two O rings on the new filter and never realized it till it was too late . The gasket on the valve cover should be fine , fingers crossed 🤞just keep a eye on it till you get the right gasket . Now I have to wait till next week to make sure everything worked out and you were able to continue on your adventure .

Suggest yu obtain the yanmar maintence manual and do some reading on combustion engines. There wont be a helpful neighbour boater out on the ocean. You should post some pictures of how the plumbing leads to and from that anti-siphon. Let the "youtube experts" weigh in. Ideally, there should be a high loop so that water trying to get from the ocean to the engine has to climb a tall grade. Ideally the anti-siphon loop would never need to do anything (but you still want it there in place).

What I did on my Yanmar , which also had an oil filter positioned like this one, was to remote it. Mounted on an engine room bulkhead changing oil was never messy again. And because it was easier one tended to do it on schedule rather than putting it off. Total cost was the price of two hoses and their fitting; about $30.

Love the channel. I too am new to boating and had a hydro lock on one engine my first summer. I have risers and elbows on my setup and had antifreeze pass by the exhaust manifold gaskets and enter a few of the cylinders. Of course I only discovered this no start condition while in open water and after the other engine wrapped the dinghy tow bridle. We drifted closer to shore and eventually got snagged on a shrimp pot line holding us in place until a diver could come out. San Juan islands not far from your home port. 🤣. I feel like we have been attending the same school of hard knocks.

Next time do not run the engine, before changing the oil, you do not need it warm but what you are doing is spreading all the dirty oil around inside the engine so you are not getting it all out, as a mechanic we was taught to change the oil on a cold engine one that has been sitting for a few hours! Running it is probably why your oil filter was full, also on the second engine you could use the dirty oil from the other engine as the flush oil!
