Rand figured out to cleanse the taint from two sources. He learned from The Eye of the World that Saidar can be used to remove the taint from Saidin because the Aes Sedai did it to create the pure pool of Saindin at The Eye of the World. But, the problem is what to do with all that taint? So, he realized from his dual wounds on his side that the dark one's taint and Shadar Logoth's taint can cancel each other out.

Two of my favorite scenes from this book are in the Far Madding chapter of this section. When Lan kills a blademaster, and it is such a foregone conclusion that it happens off page. No need to describe him defeating one of the best in the world, because OF COURSE he will. And then, when Lan is dangling off the edge of the roof, and tells Rand to let him fall, and Rand responds "When the sun turns green". Just a couple of badasses who respect one another being badasses.

@@csarmii Maybe I'm being too harsh. Judge for yourself of course. But while the Matt in the first few books was a bit rough around the edges, he was still a good friend. He was certainly never the type who would steal from a friend. And as Nerdy & Clarus have commented on, the show dove into making him show the effects of the dagger on his personality before we ever got to see much good about his personality (other than his love for his sisters as one of his few redeeming qualities). The actor they chose to play him did a great job of making him charming, but the writers did just as great a job of making him a terrible friend.

The most congenial episode in a while. I think the thing to appreciate about Tylin is how she’s really humanised here as this flawed creation of power dynamic and cultural capital - and yet she’s still capable of wanting the best for Mat in the end and being complicit in his escape. There is genuine care there, even if it is through the twisted filter of their messed up power dynamic. You have to consider how, metaphorically, she hasn’t escaped but is in fact suffering her own sort of non-consensual ravishment at the hands of a more powerful and insistent foreign invader. There’s the possibility of rising to the low blood, but she’s ultimately in their thrall, as is her city. Her power and agency is - despite the illusion of it being a partnership - stripped away and she’s now defined as a thing of the Seanchan. Do you reckon she really wants to shave her head? She’s now every bit the puppet that Mat was, and I suspect that only her addiction to power and lifestyle, plus her feelings of duty to her people keeps her from running for the hills.

Happy holidays everyone, was nice to see you guys engage with audience more. Regarding cleansing there are multiple things. In PoD rand recollects that one of his questions to the Finns was how to cleanse the taint. Another clue was the clash of different evils between his wounds. And another was when he visits shader logoth in book 7 he felt a strange pulsing of the taint. PoD quote of reference "He had asked once, warily, where he knew the answers would be true, how to cleanse the taint from saidin. And got a riddle for answer. Herid Fel had claimed the riddle stated “sound principles, in both high philosophy and natural philosophy,” but he had not seen any way to apply it to the problem at hand. Had Fel been killed because he might have puzzled out the riddle? Rand had a hint at the answer, or thought he might, a guess that could be disastrously wrong. Hints and riddles were not answers, yet he had to do something. If the taint was not cleansed somehow, Tarmon Gai’don might find a world already ruined by madmen. What had to be done, had to be done." ACoS: With the night, Mashadar roamed its city prison, a vast presence that could appear in a dozen places at once, a hundred. Mashadar’s touch was not a pleasant way to die. Inside Rand, the taint on saidin beat harder; the distant fire in his side flickered like ten thousand lightnings, one on top of the last. Even the ground seemed to pound beneath his boots. It's a plot that has been worked on for books now :) just very subtly. Try not to get overwhelmed by the trigger issues and you will spend lot more time with really interesting things.... Oh and on callandor being hidden right outside. I think Rand never thought his trip to far mudding would get so prolonged. And for what he wanted to do, he needed to save every ounce of energy. Remember that he also is having a tough time seizing saidin Happy holidays!

Selucia shouting don’t harm the Daughter of the Nine Moons, makes sense because she is trying to make sure no one harms her accidentally. Tuon isn’t just an important noble, she is irreplaceable. Tuon isn’t secretly the DotNMs, she is “under the veil” because she saw bad omen. When someone arrives and is welcomed in a new place they don’t want to bring bad omens with them so they use their simple name and don’t use titles so the bad omen wouldn’t harm all they are in control of, The Return. But every single Seanchan knows Tuon is the DotNMs. Mat overheard prior that the Seanchan is waiting for their DotNMs, primary heir to the empire, this is where he found out Tuon is that person.

The whole palace knows about Elayne's pregnancy because while Elayne and Rand were getting it on, Min was babbling about how Elayne was going to get with child. Anything to distract herself from the bond being all fiery and passionate in her brain. We do actually know how old the Forsaken are, though it's dropped in little bits and off-hand comments. In The Shadow Rising for example, Mogy says she was 200(250? Don't remember the exact number...) when the Bore was first made. Rand's picking Osan'gar as a bodyguard was complete Ta'veran-ness in action, and probably the better outcome. Ask yourself this: If Rand hadn't picked Dashiva... what influence would he have had left to his own devices in the Black Tower?

Nerdy, I think, as we head into the last major acts of this series that you could should consider setting up a Google Doc where fans of the series who have completed it already can, over the next few books, add information and perspectives there that we'd like you to consider in the aftermath. Of course, this would be not to be opened by you until you finish. You could have a moderator go through and prune all the bullshit and spam out of it prior to the big day. We could add points of view on resolutions that we think you'll love, as well as explanations of the reasoning behind ones that you might be less comfortable with. We could also provide examples of scenarios we could see happening after the events of the book - sometimes purely invention - sometimes based on where things seemed to be headed. I think you responding to these almost immediately after reading the series would be a good way to debrief and stay in the world to an extent. I've spent years thinking about a particular thread and where it might go, and I'd love to share it -- but now is not the time, and I find myself thinking of things that I have to remember to tell you after book 14, but it's hard to remember them all! I surely can't be the same.

When it comes to how Cadsuane treats Rand you might want to consider that she grew up in Far Madding. As you have seen they have certain systemic prejudices against men. While she has been out and about in the world a lot but you put her upbringing there together with how Aes Sedai are generally either feared or respected but seldom ignored and used to men deferring to/being afraid of them might explain why she she instinctively tried to boss/bully Rand. Egwene showing hypocrisy when it comes to Rand annoys me all the time. She called Rand arrogant when he started giving orders despite Elayne telling her that's what he is supposed to do, and yet she immediately started doing the same the second she was raised Amyrlin. She makes Aes Sedai swear fealty to her and then get annoyed when Rand does the same (and being Amyrlin didn't give her the right to do it). I have no idea how they were a couple in the first place, she constantly thinks the worst of him from the moment they broke up, and it was a friendly break up too.

There is a very interesting discussion in fandom regarding the misogyny that lies in fandom hating the female characters ( many on nynaeve including the people who host the podcasts, many of elayne) due to the fact that people can't somehow tolerate flawed female characters. They can tolerate flawed male characters. The amount of stupid stuff rand mat and perrin do never meets the kind of scrutiny that feminine traits does. Yet i agree with you on egwene. Egwene tends to be the more perfect of the lot but in turn ends up being the most hypocritical. She kind of deserves the disdain (also because what she did I FoH). I also find her arc to br the most ridiculous. Sorry I just don't buy that a 19 year old simply outmaneuvers aes sedai, and the plan is not even smart. But it speaks for human biases that people find her rad. It's because she is the early personification of strong female character trope. While others are not. And yet somehow we think humans have evolved from RJs times. I laugh.

@@ananyas9625 that’s deliberate, though. I appreciated the penny drop moment when I, as a young man, read this and found myself getting more and more angry at how horrid the women are in the series. It took me a while to notice that I was getting pissed at rhe sort of stuff that women in our own world hand to deal with all the time from men - stuff that I’d previously given a pass to. I don’t think it’s flaws that we don’t tolerate in women - it’s acting in manners that seem to us be the male roles which are also flawed. A guy becomes power hungry and that’s fine. Dude is just ambitious and has a lot of responsibility. A girl is? That uppity butch! She needs to settle down.

@@ananyas9625 Yeah, i get that, i often see in fantasy people being more harsh on female characters. NOT SPOILERS BUT JUST TO BE SAFE I personally find both Mat and Nynaeve to be very annoying characters, and especially in Nynaeve case i would probably never be her friend in rl, yet i like them a lot. But there is something about Egwene that just irks me, especially after book 5, and i just never really warmed up to her. Despite everything i feel like i could trust those other 2 to have my back when needed, i'm not so sure about Egwene. I don't care if she gives orders or have people swear fealty to her, it's the hypocrisy she never actually address. Once raised Amyrlin i thought she would at least get how difficult Rand's position is and why he may have done some things, but she doesn't, at all. She gets pissed people don't take her seriously, but she herself never really recognizes the growth the other characters had. Also she almost never faces backlash for her actions/doesn't get called out much? Not sure how to say it in english, but it's like no matter what happens she comes back with a better reputation, unlike others. I love Nynaeve and as a reader i like that she gets called out for her bs, same for Rand (like when he is unsatisfied about the bargain with the Seafolk, Merana calls him out for it and he agrees he was being unfair and apologizes).

@@bluelight17 I completely am with you on all of this. In the storyline's defense, the reason she doesn't get chided by others is because she surrounds herself with characters who only support her (wise ones or siuan, vs rand or mat- whose voices she will shut down). In the sense, her character is highly hypocritical, highly problematic, but very realistic. Her plot however ... (spoilers ahead) .. .. I think her arc suffers a translation from RJ to Sanderson. The grittiness of RJ's writing allows for good ends even if by bad means type of arc. I think Sanderson likes his "heroes" and writes her less ambiguously. Morally grey character at its best, but I think the cost of her loneliness should have been highlighted better. I don't doubt that the overall plot would have still been the same but the thoughts, the emotions and how people react to her in later books would have been less... devotional.

Not his past lives, but those of the generals that went through the doorframe. At times he has memories of people fighting on different sides of a same battle.

@@bluelight17 he has those as well. but mat has four instances where he gains memories. one was when he went with rand into the aiel blood ceremony, then when he asked for holes in his memory to be filled, and when Rand tried to use the waystones to get to Falma. one gave the memories of his forefathers another gave him memories of anyone that visited the tower for half the light of the world to save the world. but he is of the old blood of amin's blood making the irony of him being someone that's almost fated to marry a woman that can channel or has the potential to patilularly poinigent. Mat has been dealing with the effects of his blood since the night they left the two rivers. after he was healed of the dagger he was babbling to himself in the old tongue. he compared the the songs of this age to an older age as he fled from Tar valon after his healing long before he walked through the red door.
