But if all other countries are still half-arse about climate change and keep polluting the water, it wouldnt help either. Joss stated that the global warming is to be blamed causing global bleaching event happening worldwide. So the keyword here is global. The health of the reef is everyone's responsibility (Im looking at you China stop polluting the air already). Even if Australia promotes their emission targets by the end of 2017 it only accounts for less than approx 2% of world's emission. That said, you are correct in a way since locally Australia's emission per capita number is more than twice compared to China which has the most population even though Australia is contributing the world less than 10% of China's emission. So it is still something the Aussies still have to worry about. Better switch from coal immediately.

China currently is in the process of transferring completely to renewable energy sources, installing more solar power in a year than many countries ever have Secondly Australia is the one exporting all the coal to china, so in reality its the Australian governments fault for significantly subsidising mining, encouraging the burning of fossil fuels due to cost effectiveness.

Look at it our point of view. I live in the Philippines, and temperatures have soared, as in SOARED. My mom said it never reached 34 degrees Celsius in her time. Today it reaches up to 38. Also remember we only have 2 seasons here, where summer takes up half the year. And climate change is real and visible here, even the fiscal and social conservative political parties here agree with the facts. The mountain range beside my house has seen less and less trees and more floods coming down onto our valley. To deniers: this has something to do with climate change. This isn't seasonal. I asked my parents, grandparents, great grandparents - in their time, you could wear a suit outside. Today, I can't even wear a fricking polo shirt outside without exponentially sweating.

Changes are really evident in Vietnam too, riverbanks in the Mekong Delta are plummeting down the water with people's homes and roads, the coming summer is forecast to be hotter than all the last ones, in some region of the country it's well over 40 degree, last year in the Mekong Delta the "flood season" didn't came for the first time in 70 years, resulting in soil getting too salty and unfit for cultivating many usual crops due to sea water getting too far in, at the same time there was a drought in the Highland region, they all happened with new record figures compared to data dating back decades... everything is literally happening before our eyes.

@Marcopolo-pm8ty

Hey, great subject and great video, though I'm a bit disappointed that you linked the survivability of reefs to temperature only. Corals and algae are a very fragile eco-system, and needs specific conditions to grow: salinity, opacity of the water, oxygen levels and temperature. This means that corals can die in various ways : increase of salinity, high influx of sediments and/or pollutants, changes in the sea level and in temperature. Most of these changes are not directly related to temperature (like sedimentation and pollution). I think it's a bad idea to give the impression that the environmental crisis is only linked to greenhouse gases, it's also about how we manage pollutants, bio-diversity, deforestation, access to water, etc... These issues are deeply connected and we cannot resolve one issue without resolving the others.
@maximilianboo
7 жыл бұрын
These aren't just mere assumptions based on minimal observations. Marine experts are able to test salinity, oxygen and nutrient levels, as well as water temperature and many other factors. Scientists take all these variables into consideration and look at the data. If over a 5 year period they see no drastic change outside that of the standard deviation of values of salinity, oxygen and nutrient levels of the marine water that are to be expected in the affected area, yet they observe drastic changes in water temperature paired with the knowledge of how reefs function and the necessity of zooxanthellae for energy and nutrients as well as how these organisms react to temperature changes, they can accurately asses that the changing water temperature is the most likely cause for the degeneration of the reefs. This is science, they are not trying to give impression that these reef deaths are linked to greenhouse gasses, they are providing their best analysis based on the evidence they have. Science does not push an agenda, it simply provides the most probabilistic conclusions to the observed problems at hand.
@Marcopolo-pm8ty

Maybe I didn't express myself clearly enough. I totally get that the rise in ocean temperature is the main culprit here, and obviously it's the reason why bleeching happens. I was just underlining the fact that there are a variety of factors that can also influence the stability of these ecosystems. I'm not an expert on the subject but I would be really surprised if the rise in temperature is the only factor influencing coral growth worldwide. First of all, because the ocean level are also rising which is also a problem (it's linked to global warming, but the effect on corals is different since it influences the amount of sunlight received, and unlike temperature, it probably won't go back to normal in a week or two). I would also be very very surprised if there are no coral reef being damaged by pollutants and/or a high sedimentation. These reefs are always near the coast and too many countries do not monitor their waste and just throw everything into the sea. Sorry if it sounded like I was trying to push an agenda, I was just trying to explain that this problem is even more complicated that what is explained in the video (although for the great barrier reef it might "just" be it).

There sea has a variety of temps, and life at all temps the coral will migrate to cooler water is necessary. Reefs can and do recover but they are fighing our with other sea life such as seaweed etc... the best adapted life takes over and coral can more to places were it was previously too cold for them.

@ufewl

Coral can spawn. Once in the water, larvae ‘swim’ to the ocean surface. If they are not eaten, they eventually settle to the ocean floor and attach to a hard surface. Once attached, they metamorphose into a coral polyp and begin to grow, dividing in half. As more and more polyps are added, a coral colony develops and eventually begins to reproduce.

Rythem It's all planned in our genes. We caused so many problems because human is greedy, but realize that causing those problems will force us to solve it, and in this progress, we extend our knowledge. Though this won't make us live more happily, living like monkeys or cavemen of course have as equal happiness as living as modern humans, but more technology and knowledge give us more "resistance", when it comes to some unpresidential challenges, for example, the earth will eventually become unlivable, and if we just stay simple and living in Ancient Greek time, we will never be able to reverse our destiny as being destroyed. But with our technology and knowledge, which were gained and accumulated by our greediness, which, though had caused so many problems, also helped us to overcome these, we could possibly solve this seemingly inevitable destiny, maybe we are be able to do space traveling when that day comes. I think that's the mystery of human, what keep making us cause problems also make us stronger and having more control and grasp of the world. For instance, if it's not that human are so greedy and always want more money, and that we are so greedy and always want to have a better life standard tho it's already good enough, so many things wouldn't be invented, and because the inventions are the demonstration of our understanding of the world, without being able to make those we might not be able to perceive what's really going on around us. things such as phones, computers, wouldn't exist, and that earth will eventually become unlivable, Gamma ray can destroy all of us, wouldn't be known, which are the essential challenges for us in the long term. our greediness motivates us to develop, it's a interesting thing.

I am typing this from India, a relatively poor country where in a chilly 15 degrees "winter" I put my AC at a crisp 27 degrees while charging my Mac and iPhone simultaneously, turned on the geyser for a midnight shower, switched on 4 lights including the floor lamp. And that's just my room. I am hopeless. Such videos keep reminding me to keep a tab on myself but folks equally or more fortunate than me need to realise the same, collectively.

Hello, I’m a 13 year old Australian. I can’t even explain how horrible our parliament is at caring for the environment. Growing up this is all our school talked about. Every time I hear about things like this I can’t explain how much I feel like the previous generations have failed mine. I always want to try and help but I’m to young.

Also, you guys do realize that there have been hundreds of fluctuations in temp in the past, even when there could not possibly have been human interference. Some, like the Roman warm period, were even warmer than it is now.

Evidence suggests it is much warmer now than in the Roman warm period. Though it has been warmer in Earth's history, it has never been hotter than today in the holocene.

The roman warm period was a period this meaning it changed either getting hotter or colder, but what is happening now is that we are changing climate slowly, we are setting new higher averages which over a time period like the roman warm period will not decrease therefore giving us a unrecoverable climate change

People in India use 1/10th the energy of people in the USA. So basicly a couple indian families use the same energy as a teenage girl who drives herself around in a big SUV. If you want to stop global warming we need to do stuff like put weight limits on vehicles and drop the minimum wage closer to India.

Why can't we genetically modify the coral system to make them survive higher temperatures and more polluted waters? I understand that this isn't ideal and that GMOs are highly controversial but I believe that this may be a useful tool to use along side trying to mediate the effects of CLIMATE CHANGE (global warming is misleading and possibly inaccurate) to buy coral reefs and the biodiversity they harbour more time.
@mynameisnotcory

While this would be an interesting idea as a last ditch effort to save the species, climate change and ocean management practices are so damaging that there is not only this one warming ocean problem. Another problem aside from warmer water temperature (which harms the coral organism itself), is ocean acidification, caused by CO2 dissolving into the water and lowering the pH. Ocean acidification is a big issue for any organism that incorporates calcium carbonate into its body. In the coral's case, it's skeleton is made up of calcium carbonate, so the acidification will affect the coral's ability to maintain or create a skeleton (especially a problem for creating new skeleton in those tiny "baby" corals) through simple chemistry, not in control of the organism or anything that the organism could do (or be altered to do). There are many organisms that incorporate calcium carbonate- unfortunately several of them are critical to the food chain (at the bottom).
