Japan at the beginning of the 20th century was a rapidly developing country, rushing toward modernization and expansion. In 1904, Japan became the center of world attention when it started the Russo-Japanese War. This war was a battle between the Japanese Empire and the Russian Empire for territory in Manchuria and Korea. Japan's victory in this war confirmed its position as a military power capable of competing with Western powers.
During World War I, Japan was allied with the Allied countries. Japan saw opportunities to gain territorial advantages from the German Empire in the Asia Pacific, such as German territories in China and the South Pacific Islands. In 1919, Japan secured Rights 21 in the Treaty of Versailles that ended World War I, strengthening its position as a regional power in Asia.
In the 1920s and 1930s, Japan experienced a period of aggressive expansion. Nationalist beliefs, combined with economic and political discontent at home, pushed Japan to seek new territory and resources in East Asia. The Sino-Japanese War (1937-1945) is one example of this expansion, starting with the Marco Polo Bridge incident in China and developing into a major conflict between the two countries.
On December 7, 1941, Japan launched a surprise attack that destroyed the United States naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. This attack prompted the United States to officially join World War II.
