The Mom Team helps us learn about how babies sleep and other practical info. for you. Newborn babies have two types of sleep: light sleep, more active sleep that lasts typically 20 to 30 minutes and then deep sleep with limited movement and steady breathing that lasts 50 minutes to two hours. They switch between them. The video explains both.
Many babies have more deep sleep without the light sleep phase starting around 16 weeks or four months of age.
While newborns are adjusting to their sleep patterns, new parents are getting sleep in two to three hour blocks on average, waking to feed and change their babies. Even 90 minutes of sleep can be useful. Don't hesitate to ask for help from partners, grandparents or friends so that you can get the rest you need.
