More bum and chafing info for non-cyclists please. I try to explain this to new cyclists and their minds cant handle the two concepts of proper support, reducing saddle pressure by having a good balance position with weight on the pedals and the handlebar. and secondly chafing which is a problem for non riders with fatter legs vs fit skinny legs and thus afflicts non riders more than pros. Propper shorts help fix the chafing problem and help distribute saddle pressure along with a bit of cushioning.

Saddles without a middle gap is a big no-go for me as a male cyclist. My previous saddle without the gap really made my private part go numb if I would ride for an hour and it would even start to hurt. After buying the saddle with the gap it immediately fixed all the pain and pressure. If you continue to ride like this (with all the pain and numbness) you could cause severe damage to your private parts on the long run. Definitely recommend the man here to buy one with a gap.

I am not convinced by the slow rides are worse because of higher pressure on the saddle. The more watts produced the greater the forces exerted by the leg muscles (at a fixed cadence) and these forces have to be reacted somewhere ie the saddle unless the theory is that at higher speeds the riders reaction more of these forces through the hands via the core which I doubt. If you are ripping along at 50kph you have a lot of other things to occupy the mind like not crashing maintaining your position, keeping up, who is where etc etc and so less time to think about the pain in your bum. Also slower days the riders will likely sit more upright and thus transfer more of the weight through the bum and less through the hands like us normal humans, as was mentioned. Also if the set up is primarily designed for the aggressive position with slammed stem then this more upright position will be sub- optimal. Riders do not want to waste energy hovering over the saddle using core and upper body muscles. Anyway just my 2 cents…

My friends ride giant seats and it is so hard to ride or give enough power to go fast

Having major problems with my, er, positioning so this vlog is useful. I’ve more research to do to, ahem, get to the bottom of this.

I’m doing a cross country trip next summer (4,000 miles, 60-80 miles a day) and I’m scared for my butt lol, And I’m only 16. I’m going to keep my search for a good saddle, or if anyone has any suggestions.

Sit bone width is a fairly large factor. My favorite saddle is the Antares, because I''ve not got the skeletal structure as narrow as the vast majority of grand tour level cyclists. Sit bone width isn't about weight, though there are often correlations with Body Mass Index (which is a terrible means of estimating body fat percentage, $10 body fat calipers are far, FAR better, but I digress). Just pointing this out to counter the "I need a giant saddle because I'm fat" notion, that is wrong and thousands of new cyclists fall into this trap only to quit the sport because their ill fitting saddle is uncomfortable. Also, ladies, you have, on average, wider sit bones! Just natures way of bettering your odds of surviving vaginal childbirth in addition to the all the other crazy hip joint loosening going on down there during pregnancy. Us men have it easy in this regard.

Ten dollar calipers are not very good and you need someone that knows how to use them properly. The main issue is that BMI tends to use one specific number where healthy weight tends to be a range. It's accurate enough for general populations but there will always be individual specifics that it doesn't work for. According to the bmi chart, Dwayne Johnson, is morbidly obese but no one would think that looking at him.
