How do fungi affect tree growth? On Arbour Day, traditionally a day to plant trees, we wanted to share an exciting experiment we’re conducting at Bunloit. Thanks to @Dundreggan #arbourday #trees #treework #fungi
Transcript
So this is Clunebeg and it was a Sitka spruce plantation - clear felled back before Highlands Rewilding took over management in 2019 or 2020, and we're going to replant it entirely with broadleaf trees, and we're running a mycorrhizal trial here.
Mycorrhizal fungi live in almost all soil and they form relationships with the roots of trees and plants. The fungi help the plant take up water and nutrients and, in turn, the plant provides the fungus with the nutrients created by photosynthesis. So, in this way, the fungi help the trees to grow, lowers mortality rates and increases resilience to drought and diseases.
So some of these trees are going to be planted with mycorrhizal pellets, and some trees planted without.
And you can see some of the plots marked out here with canes, and posts. They're 30 by 30 meter plots. We’re not going to plant anything in the plots marked with orange tape. They're going to be left to naturally regenerate.
And we're going to compare tree growth among these different treatments and see how it differs, and also see if there are any differences in the soil itself with soil carbon and soil diversity and other soil properties.
We’ll keep you posted.
