This little weaner has probably been ridden by his mates and developed a huge hematoma which probably started on his back and extended down his leg as it headed ventral (down) looking for a way out. Left to its own devices, being anerobic (no oxygen and stale blood) it would likely have eventuated in a big abscess and a sick calf. We collected a needle aspirate to ascertain what we were dealing with (and he had a bit of a kick) then once we realized it was a hematoma we created a ventral incision to drain it. But then... the fibrin clots were plugging the drain (so to speak). He sure looked happier by the time we finished!

How do huge cow abscesses form? Sometimes from a huge hematoma. Pretty bloody wild regardless!
