I live in chronic pain. I have severe spondylitis that causes muscle spasms and agonising trapped nerves throughout my meck back and chest. I havbe arthritis in my hips and knees, and have had Two heart attacks. I am only 45 years old. The past decade has been horrible, and yet through it all, when I was at my worst in Sin, and after a life of putting my faith in science, Jesus saved me in January of this year. I got baptised by full immersion too. I still have all the same physical issues that I had before being saved, and this causes me to be laid up on morphine for days at a time, but in my heart I know that God himself loves me, and all this agony is just temporary. Because this life is temporary, and I know that my best life is with Him. The simple fact that I seek His face, the simple fact that I rejoice in His word, in spite of my pain, is what brings Him glory. I admit I do get depressed due to it all, but even this Gloryfies Him as He always pulls me through. It is not about us searching for ways to give Him glory, He is the glory. As we display our faith in Him for others to see, this too brings Him glory. Do not seek to bring it to Him, just seek His face, and in doing so, inspite of your trouble, this brings Him the glory.

I enjoyed this response...., but, it is difficult to live in CONTINUAL PAIN! (Sorry for the all caps)! Having everything in your life taken away! Financial depletion! In my experience, my biggest observation is the nonconcern by other Christian's! I know it is freightening to live,or be around pain! People are sinners, but followers if Jesus are called to care for others,to bare one another's burdens! We are his body! Directly! Pain makes me,"and others who have... share chronic pain",see life and sinfulness clearly! I only pray that l experience God's Grace and mercy. That he lives the pain with me! That one day there will be joy!

I have Hydrocephalus, and live in constant pains because of years of surgery during my childhood. My hope is that everything we go through in our conditions leads us to hold tight to God. (I don't remember the verse, but I always think of the faith and knowledge that merely touching His robe would heal.) I always say that I should be dead, but God keeps me for some purpose.

honestly, I would like to understand better, how can I derive joy in suffering. I understand that when persecuted for Christ we can be joyful, but when we get chronically ill or in serious pain, how can i derive the joy of the lord in that?

Pastor John quoted 2 Corinthians 4 which explains (and Im paraphasing) that our affliction is not meaningless but is working for us an eternal weight of glory. The pastor also explains how God is glorified in our weakness through our testimony. The joy is not happiness per say, but more if an eternal thankfulness and peacefulness that only comes from Jesus.

Opeyemi Odedeyi We remember that our pain is fleeting in relation to eternity. Remember that JESUS died a horribly excruciating death for us, and, will hold us in our pain. When people ask, "how do you handle it?", you smile and say, "it's not me. I'm weak, but, GOD is faithful." You get through it hour by hour, walking more closely with Him. Praising Him all the way. Prayer and Praise.

It is hard but the Lord can do it! He encourages us if we lack wisdom to ask and He will give it. It may not happen overnight but if we are willing to live faithfully and obey His commands, that joy will come! There's not a simple equation and each person's journey is different but God is faithful to keep that which we commit to Him. May the Lord renew you joy in Him.

When someone isn't healed, is it safe to say their disease and sickness glorify God and that His grace sufficient for him?

R.Jonathan Tan I would be careful with such constructions. Sometimes there is simply no explanation or justification. Or we are not revealed such. We have to accept that and live on.

I am a Christian, & I have suffered from severe chronic pain for my entire adult life. I still ask God to heal me, but so far He has chosen not to. I have also lived through some very painful, trying times in my life. But he gives me grace every day, & I use my time to pray for & encourage others. I think my physical & emotional pain has had a purpose - to make me empathetic to the needs of others. I trust God to help me, & I praise Him for every day I have to serve Him, even though I look forward to His returning so I can live pain free with Him in Heaven for all eternity.

How does chronic illness/disease bring "glory" to God?
@redoroy752

Because by the same comfort He would give us to get us through it we can glorify Him, and give someone else (whom might be going threw a similar tragedy) the same comfort God showed us (2 Corinthians 1:4)

I can do nothing on my own except through Him who is Holy, Almighty and Perfect. I seriously can’t. Through Him I shall keep my joy through any tribulations. Think back a few hundred years. Children of The Almighty Good God! They were being burned alive on stakes and they sang throughout that burning of they’re flesh! God is more. Just hope for what is to come. Eternity with Him who died for us.

Is it wrong to seek healing from God more than anything else? I hear people advising me to seek God not for healing alone but a relationship with him(which I do btw) Seek his face not his hand. An analogy of this is that if someone is sick, literally dying, and desperately needs healing, will he/she seek the doctors/physician for a loaf of bread? Same goes to someone who hasn't eaten for days and ask for bread but goes to a pharmacist and ask for some pills. .

While God desires us to seek Him. (Acts 17:27) God also wants us to cast our worries on Him (1 Peter 5:7) because He loves us. And that if we pray, God will heal the afflicted and our own afflictions.(James 5:15-16). To your analogy: if someone is desperately ill and hungry don't let them denie themselves what they need, but also that God wouldn't let them go hungry. And to the man who hopefuly "needed" the medicine over bread; God would also provide his needs. For the same God who takes care of us will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:19)

Redo Roy no, God does not heal our afflictions. We are saved and have eternal life after this miserable hellhole of an experience. And we can be glad we don’t go to hell. But healing in this life? No.

It's not wrong. God says to pray without ceasing and to petition God through prayer and supplication. The Bible also says to cast our cares upon God for He cares for us. I have lived with debilitating chronic pain for over 7 years now. I would be lying if I said that this experience hasn't challenged my faith and that I haven't struggled to feel or believe in the goodness or love of God the way I used to. But I know that there is a reason for this and I just have to keep trusting God and His timing. Whether He ever heals me in this life or not, but I definitely don't think that Christians are to ever stop asking God for healing or hoping for that. That said, in the meantime we are to let God be sufficient in the midst of our suffering. That is still something that I am trying to do and working on. Chronic pain, in my opinion, is one of the hardest things to go through and the chronic nature of it is very challenging to my faith. But God says that there is a season for everything a time to mourn and a time to laugh. It might not be the season that I want to be in for so long, but one day, even if it's on the other side of this life the pain will end. God promises to wipe every tear from our eyes and us an eternity with him where there will be no more sickness or pain.

So I'm related to real life it would be nice to see Christians using everyday language when talking about chronic pain real practical solutions to help people with chronic pain and the loneliness and isolation it brings this is typical Christian words with not much substance this seems harsh I know but I personally suffer from chronic pain and was a church leader now practically I can't get to church there seems to be a lot of words sad around illness including pointing to bible passages but not much practical application to waking up in the middle of the night and being so much pain you're in tears not being able to move the next day if some of this doesn't make sense I do apologise that I use voice activated software let's see what the response will be let's see if there's any practical suggestions the most important thing people in chronic pain is being listened to practical support being offered just to know that god is with you is not enough it just comes across as Christian platitudes if I challenge people on their attitudes towards sickness the normal Christian response is just to put the focus back on the other person to say that they're bitter or that they're not willing to give it to God I think these are really easy statements it's a lot harder to offer practical support year in to not have answers to struggle in the mud that's what gets my most respect

No, all people suffer in some way at some point. But as Christians we can find meaning and purpose to our suffering if we lift it up to God.
