Another option to get controllers to work on old games are programs that map controllers presses to keyboard keys.

Yes, like Joy2Key! It didn't come up while writing because I'm generally happy with keyboard and mouse anyway

This really was a great and entertaining look at a topic I have thought about but haven't really looked into. Old consoles are emulated quite often so finding reliable emulation software has gotten easier over the years. But old PC games are their own animal where back in the day, a lot of PC software ran on it's own "driver code", so to speak. I have friends who can explain it better but I think the extra short version is x32/x64/x86 were not always the standard for PCs.

PCs have always used x86. The original IBM PC used an 8088, which is an 8086 with the data bus crippled from 16 bits to 8, but otherwise the same, and completely indistinguishable to software. The 80386 in the mid-1980s brought in 32-bit modes, and the Athlon64 in the early 2000s brought in 64-bit mode (at least for consumer models, x86-64 appeared a bit earlier in some server chips, and got a Linux port before hardware was even available).

windows wouldn't be anywhere near as popular, especially in the business sector, if they didn't support old programs from 3 decades ago.

I've been struggling for weeks now to try to get Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius (PC) to run properly. The most success I've had so far was to mount with PowerISO, and run using dxwnd. Unfortunately the graphics look horrible, but I know they can be improved somehow as I've seen recent videos with improved graphics. I have no idea what I'm doing, and it feels like every other creator that seems to have an idea of how to fix this is gating the information. Could you please push me in the correct direction?

My first instinct would be to try to run it on Windows XP in a virtual machine, but the PC Gaming Wiki mentions a compatibility patchfor the game. Have you tried that?

@@Alien_Bob yeah, the DLL patch helps a lot with some of the graphics issues, but it isn't quite perfect. I found the speed runners discord and it looks like there's a new and improved download I'm about to check out

Speed runners, bless em. I wish you luck! Let me know if I can still help, I was just a few beats away from installing the game myself and seeing what I could do

@@Alien_Bob I really appreciate it! Looks like the speed runners have an entire patched games file that they listed on Dropbox, it seems to run as well as I'd expect it to. I'll see if I can tinker around with some of the settings dxwnd, but otherwise I believe it's good enough to record. Thank you for your help though, your videos have been a huge source of help!
