Not to sound like "That guy", but... Something I am not liking about the quick questions is that they tend to be third grade level, or extremely simple. I was taught how rainbows form in second grade. "why do stars twinkle?" "why does beer make you pee?" "Why does Saturn have rings?" I found a lot of QQs to be very easy questions, and I skip most of them. Perhaps it is impossible to really explain a complex question in about two minutes, but too many of these questions are of a kindergarten level. "Why do we yawn" and "Why does Swiss cheese have holes" are good examples of legitimately good questions quickly being well answered.

Good to see that youtubes comment system is working well.

Upset Poncho I know a lot of people who think the knowledge about (for example) how rainbows form has no "use" and is "pointless", so they don't want to learn about it. Other people I know thought the same way in their teens, but are now interested in science and (not practical) knowledge in general. Maybe it's the area I life in, but around here people tend to only learn about practical things they need for work or in everyday live, as everything else is a waste of time for them. And I encountered quite a few comments tagged as spam in scishow videos lately. I guess some troll runs around tagging everything he/she don't like.

Upset Poncho Everyone has a different set of knowledge. Just because you know the answer to a question doesn't mean everyone does. If you've known something for a long time you might think it's trivial and obvious, but that's a very self-centered way of looking at it.
@upsetponcho5944

Alex Kennedy These are extremely basic questions. If you had an elementary school education, you will know the answer to many of them. A few of them I did not know the answer to. I am stating that most adults will know the answers to these questions because they are *too* trivial. I am not trying to come off as self centered. Even with the most basic set of knowledge, you should know how a rainbow forms.

But why exactly is it a circle? Is it because the sun is a sphere? It sounds like a silly question but in reality it isn't. It is like if you had to explain to someone how you do to ride a bike. You can give instructions on how to use the bike, but the real answer would be to explain all the factors like gyroscopic precession, measuring the balance, torque, friction, and how you combine them. Your brain does that automatically, but it really doesn't know how.

Roman Pasquill Somehow KZitem won't let me reply to your comment directly. Though double rainbows happen when the light inside a droplet bounces twice before reaching you. Technically, there are infinitely many rainbows above the brightest one you see. They just quickly become fainter and fainter so while double rainbows can be observed with *some* frequency, seeing a triple or higher-order rainbow is incredibly rare.

If anyone wants to see the full circle of a rainbow without jumping out of a plane or strapping on crampons and using an ice axe, I recommend Denali National Park in Alaska. The bus that travels into the park drives along some cliffs that have enough vertical displacement from the valley below to catch some full rain-circles pretty consistently in the summer when rainstorms are frequent. Just make sure to bring some bug spray.

An interesting effect of rainbows is you can feel them. Try making a mist with a garden hose in the bright sun. Works best on a cloudless day. Make the rainbow so you can see nearly a full circle with your head in the center, and you'll feel it in your eyes like when you have too much chlorine in your eyes from a swimming pool, and all the lights have halos around them. Feels the same. You can feel the same thing with a real bright rainbow in the sky. Stand in direct sunlight, and look at the shadow of your head at the center. This reveals that the rainbow isn't in the sky. it's in your eye.

It was a magical moment.

You can see an *almost* complete rainbow by placing a sprinkler under a large trampoline and jumping on it on a sunny afternoon. If it's the right time of day, as you jump on the trampoline, water dropletts will bounce up and catch the sunlight and form a rainbow circle ("raincircle"?). Gunslinger454 Actually, neither of you are quite right! A moonbow is scene under the same conditions as a rainbow, only by moonlight instead of sunlight - in that case, the moon has to be behind you as well. If you're looking directly at a circular rainbow around the moon, you're seeing a lunar halo - usually consisting of just white light, sometimes the atmospheric conditions can be just right to reveal the visible spectrum.

Excellent video. One minor quibble - I don't think a rainbow an illusion at all. The word illusion implies false or mistaken perception. We're perceiving the light coming from the sky just fine. If the intent was to state that a rainbow is not a single physical object, OK, but I don't know that anyone with the ability to look up a youtube science video didn't already know that. Phenomenon might have been a better word. It would have been good to see mention of a double (and possibly triple) rainbow as well - the result of multiple internal reflections of sunlight before it is refracted to our eyes.

Here's a question: Weight gain and weight loss are merely a matter of how much stuff we take in (air and food mainly) and what we excrete (various waxes, sweat, urine, and feces). I'm curious about what exactly is excreted differently when someone increases their activity but maintains their intake at the same level. Sweat I believe would be a minor loss, as we would replace it quickly with water, but do these waste products primarily get urinated out or what?

Traingineer reminds me of a recent idle thought: the camera's sensor, rather than using a pigment for every pixel (or even most pixels), only occasionally uses pigmented pixels (ex: 25% or less). IOW, instead of, say: G R B G or: G R B W we have: G W R W W W W W B W G W W W W W or maybe: C W Y W W W W W G W M W W W W W this could result in a potentially significant increase in low-light performance, at a cost in terms of color resolution (though this could be compensated for to some extent in the demosaicing algorithm).
@BGBTech
10 жыл бұрын
Traingineer or a peltier cooler by by back of the sensor. though different pattern could be cheaper for manufacturers (at least if no one patents it, grr...). another observed issue is basically dark images and poor image quality under CFL lighting (and typically an inability for them to see much of anything outside at night). though, on another front, I have noted before an interesting pattern that different image sensors (in different cameras) give different rainbow patterns (when looking, say, at the rainbow pattern off of a CD ROM). and my natural vision is different as well. so, what I see IRL and on-camera often come out as different colors, and what I may see is often different from what the camera sees. say, a piece of UV filter glass: to me, it is yellow; to my camera and my dad, it is clear. also goes for the ring and line patterns on things like flowers and similar. though, cameras can see better under direct sunlight (I have a harder time with direct sunlight, I can only see well outside if it is cloudy). (direct sunlight is overly bright, and also makes lots of fuzz and chromatic aberration).
@BGBTech
10 жыл бұрын
Traingineer could be. I was mostly just looking at and through the glass. then pointing the camera at it. to me it looks obviously yellow (more like urine colored), to the camera, not so much. I was taking pictures with the glass held some distance in front of the camera. (it was a piece of filter glass off a halogen lamp). I also have a blue/indigo cup that is often black on camera, or black with blue sparklies on my phone. (my dad apparently sees it as black except under direct sunlight). lots of times, the differences are more subtle. well, and other issues, like I often see grey wool fabric as more brown or green (but cameras usually see grey wool as grey). ...

Here's a question I'd really appreciate an answer to, as it's been in my head for years now without resolution: I'm told that the difference between the colors in the visible spectrum is one of wavelength, that red is the longest wave we can see, and violet is the shortest. That implies that, were we able to see longer or shorter wavelengths, that we'd have more unique colors in our visible rainbow, but our current rainbow also makes sense as a color wheel (i.e. in paint, violet can be made by mixing blue and red). Is that just an invention of our own mind, or a fundamental property of the EM spectrum? If we were to be able to see beyond the visible spectrum, would the colors just repeat themselves in a cycle, or would the 'color wheel' just expand to include those new colors as well? I'm not sure I'm phrasing the question correctly, I just find it strange that violet and red are on opposite ends of a linear spectrum, when they're right next to each other on our color wheel.

By using a garden hose and a sprayer on a sunny day, you can witness the circularity of a rainbow. With the sun behind you, set the sprayer setting to mist. Sun light is dispersed by water droplets in the atmosphere and they are observed as arches due to the way in which the light refracts. The way in which we experience rainbows and colors in general may be unique to the way we process information, but photons and the spectrum in which they exist do react to the physical world in an objective, formulaic way, including dispersing at different wavelengths.

I'm new but I have a quick question, so don't blame me if its the wrong place. Ok, here it goes. I see a purpleish tinted vortex when I look into the SKY for a while, its transparent, and it goes inward and inward and centers in wherever im looking. So yeah, a purplish tinted vortex that's transparent. Don't know what it is.

Why does glue not stick to the bottle? Or, for that matter, why does tape not stick to the back of itself while it's still on the roll?

Tape is designed to be slick on the backside specifically to prevent the adhesive from adhering to it, and many types of glue stick the to the bottle they come in just fine. The common Elmer's school glue and wood glue are specifically formulated to stick to porous objects like wood & paper but be easily removed from less-porous objects like plastic, painted walls or even skin. There's a reason you give kindergartners Elmer's Glue and not Crazy Glue! :)

Well then, similar question: why does Crazy Glue not stick to the inside of its own bottle?

Benjamin Stern It does. Glue only really 'sticks' once it dries. As long as the bottle is kept closed the glue stays liquid. If, however, you leave the cap off the bottle the glue will dry, and you will never get it out of that bottle!

Actually, red light reflects at all angles from 0 to about 42.4, green light reflects at all angles from 0 to about 42.0, and violet reflects at all angles from 0 to about 40.6., Yep, that mean all colors are included in the violet band. We see colors, because much more light of each color is reflected in the outer 0.1 degree of its range, than the rest. So while there is red, and yellow, etc. in the violet band, the violet dominates.

I guess this means I'll never find that pot of gold at the end of a rainbow.

I've seen full-circle rainbows from airplanes a couple of times. Maybe I'm just lucky, but they were sweet to see!

There is the chance to see a circular rainbow while meeting the same conditions (skydivers etc.) when using a shower attachment on a hose. Stand with sun behind you, looking slightly down on the shower that is very close, make sure you don't shadow the water spray... Give it a try :)

I often just see half a rainbow, that only go from the gound to the middle of the sky, but does not go back to the other side of the gound. In fact I rarely see a rainbow that goes from one side fully over to the other side. But double rainbows are more common here in Scotland...
