Thank you for explaining the details of contracts and how they work. I always wondered about the conflicting ideals of readership engagement and making high art. You offered the best explanation possible

Thanks for another great piece of insight into the publishing world! I have a bit of a fuzzy question and I'm not quite sure how to phrase it, but I was wondering about how you manage your time as a writer, both regarding writing vs day job vs ordinary life and regarding what you put time into in your writing - do you focus on writing a first draft quickly, for instance? I haven't written that much, but I have sometimes found it difficult to know when it would be a good idea to stop the prose writing and reevaluate the plan, and when that would just break momentum and delay the work. I imagine there must also be many distractions for a published author in the form of interviews, videos for this channel, etc. How do you decide how much time to put into promotional things like those?

If you plan a book, and it is your first book, then I would write to the end of the draft, then go back and reassess. As to managing time, it's a constant struggle and I am always juggling how much time I put into promotion, social media, and so on, but being seen is a necessary part of the process for most writers, be it self published or traditional. Only the household names need not do it, and can just put books out, and not constantly engage. They have to do PR when a new project comes out to promote it, but the rest of the time, they are only as active as they want to be, there is no need for them compared to the rest of us.
