The mechanical advantage of the crank pushing the connecting rod at the top of the stroke (and the bottom) is enormous. It takes many degrees of crank rotation to raise the piston the last few millimeters.Obstruct the piston in some way and something has to give ,and it's usually the rod. The situation is worse where there is only slightly more fluid than the volume of the combustion chamber. This is where the mechanical advantage is greatest. If the cylinder was half full of fluid , the crank rotation may have stopped with no damage at all.

I'm amazed the block isn't destroyed. Dad had a farmall diesel tractor with a cracked head. We used it that way for many years, he always kept the radiator cap loose on it. One day I filled it with antifreeze and put the cap on tight. Water got forced into the cylinder with the crack and it was that same scenario. Liquid can't compress. The rod broke and the loose end broke large holes through each side of the block exploding anything bolted to the outside. I was stunned. It was still running when I shut it down. It was a good candidate for a rebuild until I did that.

Water is quite amazing! And it will not compress. Back in another life (40 years ago) I worked in a sand and gravel quarry. The sand was mined with a dredge off the bottom of a lake. The dredge's slurry pump was driven by a Cat D353 with an Ingersol Rand air starter. The after cooler started leaking and when the operator went to start the engine, not only did it bend a rod, but it also popped the head off. I have pictures.

Ouch, I know how it feels. I got the same destruction on my Scania 143, I guess it was the headgasket that failed an filled one cylinder with coolant. I turned the key, it ignited litte and bam, rock solid. Got to take a reciprocating saw and cut the bent connecting rod to get it out of the engine. The same parts from the piston and liner as you got. No fun at all...

So I guess it’s possible that if the compression release had been opened and the tractor moved a few feet before trying to start it that the liquid might have had a chance to be blown out without causing any damage? It’s kind of sad to think about it.

Hi Squatch - long time viewer, first time commenting. That's some serious carnage that engine has suffered! But we all know its in the right hands to address it. This past weekend I attended the HECA's (Historical construction equipment association) "Last Blast" 2023 just north of Barrie, Ontario with my 2.5 year old son and dad. It was awesome seeing so many vintage machines running in the quarry pit (especially the steam powered shovel!) and seeing all of the static displays, and hearing the IH and CAT power units! My son is obsessed with all of the machines (and me too of course) and all 3 of us thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. In addition to the various Cats they have an RD6 there with a massive cable operated shovel. I think the info tag said it was used for trenching. It was my first time being up close and personal to such a machine and after seeing all of your videos over the years I have a huge appreciation for them all. The organization has two CAT Sixty's there too - one is a 1926 snow special in great condition and the other is a 1930 model - significant as it's the last original Ontario Sixty. I even found myself doing mock walk arounds and checking for matching serial numbers, undercarriage wear etc. lol. I found myself pointing out to my dad the "knuckle busting" controls on their Auto Patrol #10 grader and how the pony motors worked on the old diesels lol. It's all thanks to you and your dad! Thank you for the great content and for sharing yours (and Seniors!) passion for the vintage equipment with the rest of the world. I always look forward to all of your videos, regardless of what the content is because I know it will be fantastic and I'll learn something new. Hope your recovery continues to go well and I look forward to the next installment!

I have to comment here, while not RD-6 related directly. It is adjacent kinda. A while back you were talking about the difference between dozers and tractors. That dozers have front ends nearly even with or slightly behind the front idler wheel. While tractors have the radiator and more proud of the front idler. Since then, I found myself looking harder at such and yep. Spot on true even in the larger units. It's one of those oddities that was seen but not noticed until it was pointed out. And for how to get such a rod bent, it's a leverage thing from pull starting. That as the momentum builds in the machine being pulled, it multiplies through the drive train to the engine. Which all it needed in a cylinder was to have a small pool of unburned fuel or water that as the piston went up for the compression stroke ran into the liquid held in by the closed valves. Then it just became a weakest point, the rod at about the last third of its length. After that full compression couldn't be achieved thus a misfire for a diesel. As long as the liner isn't cracked or the piston itself damaged, a NOS rod can be sourced. A new one machined or if really desperate, the old one straightened. The latter would need to then be fully heated then cooled slowly to get the stresses out that come from work hardening, spot heating. Downside of which would be that rod would be perpetually a risk to break at the repair point. While it may never let go with the use you'd give it. It could just as easily let go at first crank post rebuild.
@ricklaleman6552

I really appreciate your explanation. The damage that results from liquid inside a cylinder is amazing. The forces inside a piston engine are tremendous. I once threw a rod out of a MM Z by stopping the feed on a hammermill it was driving. The tractor was at full throttle and I was too slow getting to the throttle. It was pretty scary.

Actually my questions are different. First off I recently saw a caterpillar add for d2 and one was pulling a log hauler that had tracks. Thought that was neat never seen one. But what is the difference between a d2, d4, d6? Older style the newer sixties version the machines got larger. I remember one that had two spools on back for cable operation of the blade. One took spent cable, which could slice your hand open, and one had new spools. We had to go to job site braise new cable spool to end of old one, spool that to old spool, then remove old spool and set new old spool in place to catch spent cable. Was a pain in the ass in the early nineties. Also when did the color change occur? Your older ones have a fair bit of orange in yellow but new cats are a bright yellow almost the same color John Deere uses, while komatsu, jcb machines use that orange yellow. (Btw I HATE that orange yellow) always looks dirty and cheap with everything painted. Hoses should be black, brackets should be black, fuel lines from injectors to pump I’ve seen as nickel/chrome plated. With fuel line nuts cadium plated. At least the few new ones I’ve seen/ drooled over. Would induction hardened 4140 chrome bar make good track pins and bushings? If I had money I would probably buy a d4 track loader to rebuild for my use/ snow removal. With cab and custom snowblower on front. Never saw the point to rear snowblowers where you couldn’t see a thing.

Yikes. That’s a shame about the rod and liner. Hopefully the crank isn’t hurt. Moisture intrusion causes a lot of good engines to be scrapped. It’ll be interesting to see you tear down that engine and see …head, crank, block condition. I rebuilt an early model D 4 engine once that was vandalized. It was 3/4 torn apart when I was hired to fix it. It took me three weeks 3500 dollars and a hand full of trips back to the owners shop to locate all the parts and hardware to put it back together. What a nightmare that was. Nothing was organized when it was first taken apart. And some hardware was never found and had to be bought from caterpillar. Is that one piece remnants of a injector tip? Its kind of hard to see it clearly with the youtube picture paused. Great content! Keep them coming! Lol have a wonderful day!

Don't take much to bend a rod in any engine. Most common trying to compress a liquid something going to give. Other is ignition timing too advanced or very high boost. Best one metal doesn't compress either. I had 351C 4v break intake valve head off and it didn't bend the rod but broke cyl wall. At work driver had drove his truck with EGR cooler leaking coolant into engine for 3 weeks. I go get the truck and EGR cooler went from leak to burst open just as I got to shop door. Locked engine up solid instantly stopping engine. It fill intake with coolant and after getting engine apart bent 5 rods out of 6 rods. This was on cummins ISX 15. Owner tried to blame us but do you really think going to happen driving it for 3 weeks knowing it had a problem.

So, if you do a pull start, and have the compression release OPEN and pull it for 100 feet or so, BEFORE closing the compression release, will that “pump” out any fluid in the cylinders, then allowing you to CLOSE the compression release for a “safe” pull start? Would you “guess” that the damage to #1 is limited to the cylinder liner, piston, connecting rod, wrist pins, connecting rod bearings and hopefully “minor” scoring from circulation of debris before the engine was shut down: Oil pump? Other bearings, etc?
