I am Mateo, Guardian of the Birds in Colombia, and I am passionate about nature and birds.
In this video I tell the story of an autillo that fell from its nest when it was 2 weeks old, and a farmer brought it to a raptor rescue and rehabilitation center called Raptors to the Rescue, in David, Chiriqui, Panama.
On a visit to this center in March 2020, we were given the opportunity to care for and protect him. For 2 months, we raised him and trained him so that he could survive afterwards alone in this great wild world. We taught him how to feed, marry, fly, be independent and prepare to live in freedom.
Most experts in bird conservation agree that the best thing to do is to leave the bird in its place because the parents may come back to rescue it. But most people think it's okay to help him.
However, if the chick remains abandoned for a few days, it is very unlikely that its parents will return so in this case it would be good to help it and take it to a rescue center.
If there is no center nearby I hope this video can help you with some tips by sharing my experience.
This video is directed to people who are interested in birds, and are nature lovers, to those who want to develop a conservation project, or create a wildlife rescue center.
It is also aimed at people who do not know or fear these animals. Unfortunately due to misinformation, there are many negative myths about night birds, owls, and potoos are always frowned upon in Latin America and people kill them.
So before you hurt, kill or even pick up a fallen bird, think about it.
These birds are very important for our ecosystems, because they help us control pests and keep our ecosystems in good condition, so let's take care of their ecosystems, and protect these birds.
