I think it's also important to mention that by eating meat, the animal who died ate at least 18-20 times more plants than if we were to eat those plants directly. So by eating the animals, we're killing the animal and 18-20 times more plants and insects. Also, insects feel pain and deserve to be free from human cruelty and unnecessary killing, but their level of consciousness is probably lower than animals, so the level of emotional pain and probably physical pain that they endure is not the same (of course, still horrible).

Agricultural practices, particularly large-scale monoculture farming, can result in significant insect. deaths through direct methods (like pesticide use) and indirect methods (such as habitat destruction). Estimates suggest that the number of insects affected by agriculture can indeed be very high, potentially exceeding the number of animals killed in conventional meat and dairy production.. Then how 98 percentage animals cruelty is meat industry. It's actually agriculture😂

There can be a counter argument: Dozens, if not hundreds, of insects would have been killed to make a vegan meal. But if I eat a fish or chicken only one animal died. So how am I killing 98% and you killing 2%? Answer: 1. Go for organic farmed products. No insecticides so much less killing. 2. Level of consciousness of animals is higher than the insects. Insects have simple nervous systems and don't feel pain like animals do 3. Many animals like goats, sheep cows also eat plants. So insects killed their also. And since they eat dozens of kgs of plants to make 1 kg meat, that causes more insect killing than eating plants directly. 4. Insect killing is incidental, not the goal. We try to develop insect resistant varieties of plants that eliminates the need to kill them. But while eating animals, killing them is the goal!

1. Organic doesnt mean you dont kill insects. Only reason food crops reach your dining table is because they were cared for and prevented from being consumed by other organisms. 2. So vegans are okay with consuming honey? Plus, Killing is killing none the less. If you are okay with killing insects because they dont feel much pain, can we kill animals by depressing their nervous system so that they feel nothing at all? 3. You can go on a loop with that statement. Say a goat was butchered when it was 3 yrs old. Lets assume it ate 30k insects in 3 yrs. Now if we let the animal live, it may go on to live for another 10-12 yrs and thereby consuming more insects. 4. Insect resistant plant varieties are insect resistant because they are harmful for them. So by using more genetically modified crops, you slowly wipe out an entire species of insects. Is that ok because the goal was not to kill them but they got killed anyway? PS: i am not trying to advocate that animals should be killed. Nor am I outright against the concept of veganism. Just substantiating what the speaker here mentioned about veganism not being perfect.

@ReverendDr.Thomas

Are you ABSOLUTELY certain of that? 🤨 speciesism: In the animal rights movement, “speciesism” normally refers to the belief that all species of animal life are fundamentally equal. This view is an extremist position, bordering on pathological, as it contradicts basic principles of biological science and applied ethics (see Chapter 12 of this “A Final Instruction Sheet for Humanity” to properly understand both meta-ethics and normative ethics). Anybody who believes that all animal species are equal in moral value will not be able to sustain that view when confronted with the option of destroying the life of either a gnat or that of a fellow human being. Equality is non-existent in this relative sphere, with the possible exception of equality in abstract concepts such as mathematics (for instance, 1+1 is precisely equal to 2), and arguably on the atomic and quantum levels (for example, two hydrogen atoms are essentially identical, as are two gluon subatomic particles). English psychologist, Richard D. Ryder, who coined the term, defined it as “a prejudice or attitude of bias in favour of the interests of members of one’s own species and against those of members of other species”. This is a truly INANE philosophical position, because it is normal for a member of any particular species of animal to have a natural in-group preference for individuals of its own species. For example, if a pack of wolves was hunting a family of deer, why would one of the deer encourage a family member to run in the direction of the wolves? That would be counterintuitive and detrimental to the deer’s own species. If a race of superior aliens was to take-over the world, what kind of Homo sapiens would assist the aliens to conquer our own planet? Only a human who is mentally deranged, I would posit, unless that human believes that the destruction of humanity would be truly beneficial to the planet. Therefore, to claim that it is immoral for a human to be biased towards his own species in certain circumstances, is blatantly erroneous, just as it is fallacious to claim that one should not be biased in favour of one’s gender or race in specific cases. I have a particularly hilarious anecdote in regards to this insane, delusional “philosophy”: an Englishman I befriended on a social media website informed me that he would gladly sacrifice his life for the life of a cockroach that may be killed in the home of a vegan who believes that it is morally-justifiable to exterminate vermin. And just in case one may believe that he was not actually serious, I can assure the reader that he was indeed serious in his statement. I know him quite well, and because his understanding of both metaethics and normative ethics is poor, he truly would sacrifice himself for a mere insect (although, I cannot imagine that he would actually go through with the deed if the situation presented itself to him - such is the nature of hypocritical, egalitarian leftists). Therefore, according to the definitions of “speciesism” given above, I, the author of this Holy Scriptures, am exceedingly proud to be among those SANE vegans who consider my own species to be of greater moral value than the life of a microbe or a fly. This does not imply that I would wantingly destroy the life of an inferior animal simply for the fact that it is not human, but that I would most definitely choose to destroy the life of an animal of another species in the case of self-defence, in order to survive a famine, or to protect my food supply, all of which adheres to the correct definition of the word “vegan”. As a general rule, one ought not exterminate vermin from one’s home or workplace if one is unwilling to kill the animal with one’s bare hands. In my particular case, for example, I am completely comfortable smacking a mosquito or an ant that is crawling on my skin, but I could never bring myself to catch a rodent with my hands and bashing it to death with my fists. Rather, I would prefer to trap it in a cage and release it. Therefore, according to the law (“dharma”, in Sanskrit), the rule that ought to be followed is that the higher the species (on the evolutionary scale), the more morally-valuable it is. I’m certain that you, the reader, would instinctively attempt to rescue a dog or rabbit over a drowning insect or lizard. Of course, it is not implied that every human intuition is morally-correct, yet in that particular case, it indeed conforms to authentic dharma. Incidentally, this pyramidical hierarchy of animal sentience/consciousness applies WITHIN the human species too. See the subsections regarding moral dilemmas and the ethics of abortion in Chapter 12 of the Holiest of Holy Scriptures, this “A Final Instruction Sheet for Humanity” (where, in the latter subsection, it is mentioned that the life of an embryo is not as morally-valuable as that of a five year-old child). Cf. “vegan”.

Finally a vegan that keeps it honest instead of trying lie about it. Life is life regardless of a central nervous system and a brain. Here is just one example from researchers… “Plants can sense and react to more aspects of their environments than we can, and they maintain bustling social lives by communicating with each other above and below ground. They also interact with other species.” The problem with the human diet is more about taking only what we need to survive and giving back more than we take. Circle of life.

The collateral victims of intensive arable crop production isn’t a flaw of veganism, so much as a problem with the way we do farming. Seventy per cent of plants are grown to feed farmed animals, so by going vegan you can reduce those ‘inevitable’ crop deaths by 70%. And, in any case, looking at the wider picture of how we raise and kill animals for food, which forms of animal exploitation and cruelty do harvest deaths justify?

Agricultural practices, particularly large-scale monoculture farming, can result in significant insect deaths through direct methods (like pesticide use) and indirect methods (such as habitat destruction). Estimates suggest that the number of insects affected by agriculture can indeed be very high, potentially exceeding the number of animals killed in conventional meat and dairy production.

I have small gardens and use no machinery. I have composts and use mulch around the fruit trees and veggie plants. The numbers of insects, centipedes, millipedes, and spiders number literally in the billions in my gardens and composts. Along with the millions of earthworms, they produce feces that fertilize the plants. I realize small amounts of land space are not available to everyone, but almost everyone can grow veggies like basil, collards, cherry tomatoes, and many others in pots. Gardening and composting keep humans connected with the natural world in many ways. Gardening and composting create a symbiotic relationship between plants and those small animals. If the insect populations suddenly collapsed, terrestrial life on earth would also collapse soon thereafter.

@@Sikander_37 I think you are making justifications for being non Vegetarian. It is not like we cry only for animals wherever it is applicable. The core of Veganism is to have compassion towards all living beings. It is only illogical to think that since there is no solution for the 2% so we will not follow 98% solution which is in your hand. Just think about it. Your justifications are not correct. Let us take an example. Our country has so many issues. For most of the issues, we dont have solutions. But for some of the problems we have solutions. For Water distribution, there is no practical solution. So it doesn't mean that we should not proceed with the solution since we have not seen solutions for the rest of the issues. I’m not a vegan, but Piers was going hard on a fallacy here. The main issue was the environment and agricultural emissions specifically from livestock. Piers made it about insects killed during agriculture, which is a universal for ALL forms of crops and unfortunately entirely unstoppable unless we humans decide to starve to death in favor of insect welfare. Yes, vegans (and tech worldwide) cannot currently get rid of insect killing during agriculture, but a reduction in the use of meat based agriculture would produce significant benefits for the environment and water quality writ large. Piers is right, but once you see the bigger picture, it’s akin to attacking MLK for focusing on black civil rights and saying “but you can’t resolve all hate and brutality!”

Another important point to attach to this list of reasons why vegans avoid harming animals specifically insects that suffer and die from pesticides, IS BECAUSE more crops are required to feed livestock animals than if you just grew for yourself. So saying 'what about the insects and other animals killed during farming' is actually an argument to go vegan. Fewer insects are killed.
