People like that lady really try to gaslight younger people all the time by calling them entitled and spoiled for having the gall to want fair pay for their work. They expect you to go above and beyond and “wear different hats” but still think you should be grateful for low pay or worse, no pay if you’re an intern. The sad thing is that a lot of young people are eager to please when they first join the workforce and believe that they need to sacrifice their sanity and “grind” in order to _maaaybe_ move up one day.

@@infini.tesimo That's not how many of this works. There are no entry level jobs anymore. You're thinking there's a job that doesn't pay very well but gets your toe in the door to your new career. It's a scam. Because they actually don't end up hiring you and your "experience" still won't be enough to actually land a job. After 2008 a lot of entry level jobs became internships and locked out a whole generation of college kids from obtaining critical skills at a time they would be the cheapest. Ideally, intern jobs are supposed to be for college juniors and seniors hoping to build some tangible experience in their fields before entering the workforce, and again ideally tje internship should offer a strong enough incentive, a minor pay wage versus a FTE for wage for starters but also in cases where zero pay is available perks of value to the intern can be considered, some can be goal oriented bonuses for tasks completed or a pre-hire commitment contract with the company if you maintain a set KPI and finish your studies. Having said that, most companies act like there is only "experience" as they are interns and thats just abusive, offer something of value to THE interns, not value to the company if you expect them to do a better job, or even considering filling out the vacancy in first place

Internships were originally designed to fast track you in to the workplace. If you won an internship somewhere prestigious, you usually "won" a role at the end of the 6 months or whatever. I don't know how old her character is, but she doesn't look much younger than 30s, internships are for pampered students who live with their parents and don't have to worry about paying rent, real adults who are no longer studying (and who may even have more postgraduate degrees and experience than their own “superiors”) are not up for those child's games that they foolishly call internships…

My brother is an actor doing pretty well now. Years ago he contacted an agency for representation. The agent said if he was an intern for her for 6 months she would represent him. Keep in mind he had to have a day job to survive. He got an agent and two commercials within four months. This lady is stupid. People don't work for free and she should have made that clear before Emily got there.

FYI, this is illegal. An unpaid intern can not take on work that would otherwise be paid.

I was lucky that my first internship was paid, and it was significantly higher than minimum wage. My 2nd internship paid me nothing. I wasn’t motivated to do my best for the unpaid one..

I didn't know that Bill Gates was a woman. This would be gold if not for the fact this is so real. Code writers this happens a lot. The business will put out a ad looking for code writers. The real adjective is to bring in good code writers with that they have project in the works that will last 4 to 6 months. At the end of the project they tell you "I am sorry the company doesn't have the budget. They had you sign a NDA in the beginning. You just gave away some of your best code and are left with nothing but Security will show you the door.

Eh I did an unpaid internship when I started but was my only option. Did end up being a full time position but I didn't have expenses at the time so I was lucky in that. I really wouldn't expect anyone to work for free and it shouldn't be a thing at all.

Welcome to the real world. Being an unpaid intern is not a bad thing. It is a chance to get your foot in the door to a job many people want and that pays well. The reality is that inexperienced people are of no value to a company no matter what they think of themselves. If the company is willing to train that person, they being nice. If the person works out, they get the job and a paycheck.

Lackey? Try slave. Unpaid interns are slaves. They can't often leave because they are forced to sign insane contracts they barely understand and lied to. And do you know why those companies can afford it? Because unpaid intern is a single, young person without money who can't do shit to the company who has often millions of dollars worth of lawyers on retainer...

For real though... F*** Liz Who tf sees their friend in need of a job and goes, "Hey... why don't you come interview for a position as a slave?" Liz knew she wasn't getting a paid position. Don't waste your friends' time with that crap. At least tell them that's what it is.
