I feel like that's all rue needed to hear. Someone who had faith in her. And someone who's story she could relate to so that she could know that there's proof she can overcome this point in her life.

From watching her on Disney to watching her deal with the same addiction I’m trying to crawl out of myself.

I think the most important part of their dynamic is that Ali doesn't have a black and white perception of Rue and her problems, and it's incredibly important to give her the benefit of the doubt because it helps her trust him since it shows that he understands that things can totally fall through and recognizes that possibility and more importantly that valid fear, in which telling her he has faith in her honestly poignant. It feels more discouraging when someone wants to only see the good in you because it ignores your reality and the negative consequences of your actions, and I can only imagine for a drug addict there's only so much virtue signaling from people who haven't struggled that can help.

I keep looking for this scene with Rue’s “I don’t really plan on being here that long” line (and explanation as to why) included, but it’s nowhere to be found. 🤔

I dunno if this was what they were going for, but: At the minimum, it was just another way of saying how little Rue cares about her own life, or believes in a scenario where things get better. To me, it sounds like a sort of "symptom" of persistent childhood depression where you can't actually imagine your own future. Like your so certain you're gonna die young that any future doesn't even matter anymore; to the point that when people ask, you honestly don't have an answer. You know things you could do but, you know in every fibre of your being that it won't matter. "I don't plan on being here that long". Sort of an accepted hopelessness.

@@KamikazeK219 this comment sums up why I relate so much to this scene. Never been addicted to drugs, but as a kid I never really saw the future for myself, or the point in a future...

It's from one of the two Specials "Part 1: Rue" they put out after the first season. The other Special is titled "Part 2: Jules"
