All the segments on this channel are excellent. I have had some classes in lubrication with regard to engine and turbine bearings. While they were all good, this fellow presents a lot of information in a short time without disappearing into techno speak or 4 inch long formulae. Good place to refresh my knowledge. Thanks.

Excellent video, helped me to visualize how ZDDP works, after countless readings of materials! Thank you, keep doing what you are doing

Thanks! Glad it helped you. I'll try to do one on ZDDP in a little more detail in the next couple of weeks, because it's also an antioxidant as well as a bit of an anticorrosion additive too.

There was a recent study of MoDTC, ZDDP, & Graphene. Looks promising: ScienceDirect: "Tribological investigation of graphene or/and MoDTC as additives in PAO base oil"

Hey Mr LE, a quick question, I would like to run 0W20 oil in my gas engine (API SP, ILSAC GF6A, HTHS 2.6, Vis Index 168). The only thing I’m afraid is that the oil viscosity is too low and may cause metal to metal contact and permanent wear. Will adding extra ZDDP, Zinc, Phosphorus, Sulphur help to protect against this? I.e. adding Redline Engine Break In Oil Additive to the 0W20 oil for extra ZDDP

@@CedroCron I'm with you. 0W-20 has become a standard weight now - if it were causing a lot of engine wear there would be a decent amount of uproar. Without knowing the specifics of your situation, it's likely that you'll be fine with a 0W-20.

is there any relation between oil pump pressure and additives at high load operation of an engine? please give me detailed answer
@LubricationExplained
2 жыл бұрын
Depends. Usually the pump speed on an engine is determined by engine speed rather than engine load. So high revs on the engine means high revs on the pump. Pump pressure is a function of the back pressure exerted by the lubricants, which is more about the flow speed and the viscosity (determined by bulk viscosity and temperature). So it doesn't really have much to do with the load.

I really would like to be one of your students not just a fan and I have some particular questions begging for answers..My name is Steve from Nigeria and I studied Chemical Engineering in our local University and I am very much interested with your practical lectures.

hello, congratulations on your work! what do you think of lubricants that use halogenated hydrocarbon complexes such as chloroparaffins and chloroolefins? Thanks.

Thanks! So, chlorinated compounds are very effective, but they've fallen out of favour due to environmental concerns.

If one wanted to clean a surface completely of all surface anti-wear additives, what's the best way to go around it? How do we get rid of the ZDDP layer?

Why?

@@akdomundid you ever find an answer to your question? I don't have any knowledge of ZDDP. All I can say is that from a somewhat parallel field, that is, the workings of ceramic coatings for the protection of painted (and other) surfaces; they are generally very chemically resistant and require polishing (abrasion) to remove. Failing that, mother nature will remove them in time. Being that this isn't practical for the inner workings of an engine, I'm thinking an additive that is more acid or alkaline with a mild suspended abrasive would be in order. How you would prevent that from modifying other tolerances unintentionally is beyond my pay grade.

@@akdomun I can only imagine that time will do this naturally. If you remove the ZDDP from the oil and use some other modifier, if the surface is a wear surface, those ZDDP films can't last all that long without constant replenishment. The only time you would need to ask the question you're asking is for academic or laboratory purposes I would think.
