This was really informative. I always wondered why there’s so many different kinds of antibiotics. I thought they just gave whatever antibiotic they had on hand. Keep it up Edge!

Excellent video. I can say this on the subject. Take adeno virus for example. When specific adeno serotypes infect the ocular surface, a patient presents with conjunctivitis or as most people know it “pink eye”. There are too many doctors out there that think they can look at the signs and symptoms and identify between Adeno virus infection and bacterial which is commonly ecoli among others. There are two distinct infections…..one caused by viruses and another by bacteria. To make it harder for the doc, there’s environmental conjunctivitis which also has overlapping signs and symptoms. The problem is too many doctors are too quick to prescribe antibiotics for pink eye. Horrible thing to do for multiple reasons. If it’s not bacterial, antibiotics will not work…in fact, at certain points in the viral cycle ( ie when the virus is robust and shedding), antibiotics actually make a patient more symptomatic along with adding to the duration on symptoms…even worse, it has proven to show in increase in viral shedding making it more contagious to others. So why do doctors just write that script? Because without it, no matter if it’s viral or bacterial, a lot of schools for kids and workplaces for adults won’t let a patient go back until they have shown treatment for a few days. Quite frankly, it’s dumb! There are simple POC tests that are dirt cheap and 99% specific/sensitive to rule in or out all know serotypes of adeno. If a patient tests positive for adeno….never Rx antibiotics!!! Also, each day we are beefing up and contributing to a crisis in antibiotics resistance. It’s such a problem and priority that the US Homeland Defense department has antibiotics resistance in the top 5 concerns for America. Great video. Doctors need to know and understand the risks associated with not writing antibiotics and how being disciplined to over writing can really help the long term health and stability…..and effectiveness of our best and latest antibiotic lines. To me this is a very serious problem and not nearly enough is being done. It’s easier for health care to just write for an antibiotic…maybe not even the correct one and boot the patient out of the lane. I’ve made a commitment to the overuse of antibiotics and am making serious efforts to avoid some pretty grim outcomes if we don’t change how we practice in the US.

Usually doctors do give some precautions about medications they prescribe, but it is the pharmacists role to counsel and educate the patient about the medication they are taking.

Common antibiotic for which condition? Are you asking for one medication to treat all those conditions?
