There are two components that make up the 4Motion all-wheel drive system in Volkswagen vehicles. The first is an electronically-controlled multi-plate clutch-more commonly referred to as Haldex coupling-and the second is a Torsen differential. The former consists of a control unit that monitors wheel slip, handling conditions and drive torque, and properly distributes power to the proper wheels, while the latter actually does the work of turning on and shutting off the power to all four wheels. That’s the 4MOTION 411.
