Kriyayoga Acharya Swami Nityananda Giri answers a question on the state of the Deep Sleep (Suptavastha/ Susupti). After getting up from the deep sleep to the waking state (Jagrata/ Jagaratavastha), how the person knows that he slept well? This question arises since it is said that the mind (mana) is non-functional during the deep sleep as it gets merged in the causal body (karana Sharira). Does mind function as a witness? What is the instrument of knowledge during the deep sleep state for the person?
in the deep sleep the state is called, Prajna - prayena ajna, almost ignorant not totally ignorant. Since this is chetomukh, the mouth or at the entrance gate is the subconsciousness, this takes the imprints of the experiences of the deep sleep. This is explained with the help of Mandukya Upanishad, Pingalopanishad and Sharirikopaishad. In the deep sleep the subconscious is the instrument of knowledge for the sleeping person. mind, intellect, ego and subconscious.
