Scientists are resurrecting extinct species using a field of research known as de-extinction! There are a few major implications. Here’s how the process works.
Sounds great, just hope they prioritize the endangered animals or recently extinct ones over pipe dreams like the mammoth

Weird time to bring back the mammoth in any case, though I guess they survived the Eemian *somehow*?

They have a mammoth already incubating in an elephant right now. Be interesting to see how many mammoth characteristics it gets. Closed minded nay saying won't stop them. This type of thinking allows atrocities to happen in life while you claim its just conspiracy. Open your mind bro you don't know everything

Maybe rather than revive already dead and gone animals, we refocus on saving animals that are *about* to go extinct.

that is what we are doing, however lofty goals with far flung goal posts inspire better, and push more creative solutions as they move through the less lofty check points refining and producing better tools and proccedures. The goal is de-extinction, the pathway leads through better genetic diveristy for already living but endanged animals making thier population more robust and likely to survive.

If we can bring back thylacine, or a mammoth, it will prove that de-extinction and cloning is viable. A proof of concept. After that, it will likely be applied to cloning endangered species and recently extinct ones.

im pretty sure they are trying to get extinct animals back to restabalize their enviroment so more dont die since around 200 species go extinct every minute due to humans and stuff

Perhaps we can one day see Tasmanian tigers again. They don't have any close relatives left but it's still probably easier than a mammoth.

Depends. Ecosystems like the mammoth steppe depended on large herbivores like mammoths to thrive as they are an ecosystem engineer like living elephants and beavers. The ecosystem that been slowly replacing mammoth steppes are taiga forrests and tundras which are both less productive ecosystems.

It isn’t constructive or prudent to do any of this (not the same as learning to do it) unless we address the reasons species are going extinct. Otherwise we are just adding to the stress to current species who are surviving thus far. The revived species couldn’t adapt fast enough to survive human destruction of habitat. Reviving will only put that species through loosing the battle again if we do it now. It’s a blessing to know how to do this. Only not yet…

Don't you sort of need the whole related ecosystem to be de-extincted as well?

Well, you already pointed out that having just one animal to clone will result in too small of a dna pool to restore that species. That cute black footed ferret is yellow, which normally results from line breeding; in other words, that cute little ferret will need to outcross genetically in order to produce a healthy, genetically viable and robust dna group for restoring that species. Making mention of preserved species raises another challenge. We cannot use any dna that was soaked in formaldehyde. That destroys dna and makes it unusable for cloning.

These animals still need a habitat to live in. If we don't better protect the ecosystem with its still living life, and revive the needed habitats ... bringing back extinct life, is just for human entertainment.

The blackfooted ferret was never extinct. The scientists thought they where until a trapper caught one years ago. Thats when they discovered a large population. Just because a scientists thinks something it true does not make it true.

I just don't think it would work well with the Wooly Mammoth; even now, elephants are junted for ivory, because if how "valuable" it is. Just think how "valuable" Wooly Mammoth tusks would be on one of those markets.... They need protection.
