Hydrogen sulphide exposure causes mass mortalities in Atlantic salmon aquaculture, particularly in recirculating aquaculture systems. Researchers at Nofima studied salmon’s tolerance thresholds to H2S and the effects the gas has on the fish, determining that tolerance levels are lower than previously thought. A better understanding of these tolerance thresholds means that effective mitigation strategies can be developed to maintain Atlantic salmon welfare.
