IMO the "Auto" mode on Chevy/GMC trucks is great feature. Real world day to day driving in the winter where road conditions change from dry to unplowed around town, Auto mode is very nice. It wasn't a selling point when I bought my truck, but now that I use it almost every day here in Montana, I would look for the feature in the future.

Heads up that driving on road with the rear diff locked is very risky. Lack of differential stability in any thing that isn't a straight line will almost guarantee loss of vehicle control in any conditions - especially in the snow. I love the demonstration to show how it can help getting you "unstuck" but as soon as traction is regained, the locker should be disengaged.

Add weight to an empty truck bed in winter. Don't need a lot. 4, 50lb bags of salt, sand concrete etc above your wheel wells will vastly improve your truck in winter driving conditions. I use whatever I use regularly around the house the most which is salt for the winter. I love that truck! 💯🔥❤️

If you’re really serious about getting more traction a few less psi in your tires will make a big difference. The weight is a must for any truck in winter.

Trucks need weight in the bed in winter so no matter what people say if you don't put sandbags in the bed and don't have decent tires you will spin, and the bed will slide. For my truck I have 400-500 pounds of sand in the bed, and I have found that for my truck it's the right amount of weight. I am from MN, WY and UT so definitely lived in Snow country areas with a lot of snow driving experience. Love your videos and beautiful truck man.

Just to note, when you put the truck into auto 4wd, you are engaging the differential, then when wheel slip happens, the front wheels engage into 4wd. This will cause a little fuel mileage decrease. Great video as usual.

Just picked up a '24 2500HD AT4X at a local dealer for GMS pricing. They accepted it for the AT4X, but wouldn't for the 3 AEVs they have on the lot. Fricken love it. However it JUST fits into the garage at home, and won't in the garage at work. Doh!

I am loving my 2023 Chevy Silverado 1500 High Country Z71. I went with the 5.3L V8. I had a RAM 1500 before I bought the Silverado and I really like the buttons and dials compared to the screen on the RAM. I also like the horizontal screen layout better than the vertical screen on RAMs

Auto is just that, it senses rear tire slip then automatically puts the front in, when it gains traction it goes out. That is the beauty of auto because you don't have to keep it all the time when you are say on dry pavement. Helps on the roads that are somewhat snowy then dry areas then your bridges are snowy/icy. It helps greatly. If you put in 4 high then it does run all the time and its not good for the system if the surface isn't slippery.

Tires need a 3 Peak winter weather rating. The Toyo AT3s and Falken Wilderness tires have that and are offroad tires with semi aggressive tread.

I just bought Ko2's for my ram 2500. We had two really sloppy snow storms. They were fantastic. I could make it to my house in 2 wheel drive with the roads not plowed the day after the storm. You also need to remember, the empty rear bed and light rear is trying to push all the weight in the front of the truck when in 2wd. Locker or not. That is a lot of motor and weight to push in 2wd.

I have grown up driving in deep snow. My family had a large cattle ranch in New Mexico. I prefer mud grip tires in deep snow. Tires like trail grapplers and Toyo Open country MT’s are really good in deep snow as they ride up on top and the lugs push you forward and help you stop. But… the cost is on road and icy conditions on road…. And of course noise.

JB The manual for our trucks actually states that auto feature for the four wheel drive system does provide slightly lower fuel economy. I just was looking at the manual and it states it in there.

Tires make a big difference in snow performance. Getting the “3 peak” snow rating makes a difference too. The normal Good Year Wrangler Trail Runners that come on the 20” wheels equipped GM trucks do pretty good in my opinion. If you go by what you read online though you’d think they would get you stuck on dry pavement lol. Also a huge pet peeve of mine is guys trying to just drive in 2WD when there is snow on the roads. That kills me lol. Why buy a 4wd truck if you’re not going to put it in 4wd when you actually need to have it in 4wd. I know you were doing it to showcase the rear locker in this case. But a lot people I know just refuse to go to 4wd in snow like that or even more. Two weeks ago we had a pretty good snow here. Ranged from 5-9” depending on where you were at. That is 4wd weather lol.

Personally I stay in 2Wd most of the time even in the snow because it gives me a better idea of how slippery the roads are when I’m “launching” from a dead start so I have an idea for when I need to stop next for what ever reason

JB a question. How does the on road ride of the AT4X/ZR2 compare to a standard high trim GM3500HD? I was set on the 3500 but I’ve seen some reports that the ride on the AT4X/ZR2 is so much better than the norm with a HD truck. Price wise there isn’t a big difference for me as equipped. Does the AT4X ride a lot better than the normal 3500?
@rsbreeze

You're not getting a better ride than the ZR2s. I've got both 1500 and 2500HD and they can't be beat with DSSV shocks. You could spend $8k to $12k on a suspension kit and get there, but not off the shelf.

Don't like auto four wheel drive. In the simplest description, there is a clutch that slips in the transfer case. The clutch will wear and ultimately break. Either put it four 4wd or 2wd with a good set of tires.

I would love to see what 37” tires looks like on your truck. Your truck comes from the factory with a 1.5” lift, correct? I’m guessing you wouldn’t have any clearance issues with 37” tires with that lift?

I've done mine. Biggest issue isn't wheel well as there is plenty of room. There is very little clearance of UCAs with 37x13.5 R18 Toyos. If you hard core off road or air down in the sand, you'll rub on the UCAs with stock rims. Need a 0 or negative offset rim in my opinion.
