I am trying to understand if DirecTV or equivalent has one satellite orbiting the earth, how are so many dishes across the country able to pickup that signal? Can the same satellite signal / radio wave signal be distributed over such a wide geographic area, or how does that work? If there is one satellite that is staying at a fixed position, and dishes in Los Angeles and New York are pointed towards it, is that satellite able to beam the same signal to both dishes? Thanks!

Excellent video. Still, I would like to make a small correction: the main reason that allows using a smaller dish antenna is the use of a higher operating frequency and not exactly the power involved in the transmission. The higher the operating frequency, the shorter the wavelength. Therefore, a smaller antenna can be used while maintaining directivity.
@z_emed
2 жыл бұрын
You have forgotten another more important detail, how far away should the supposed "satellite" be, how much transmission power is needed and the maximum bandwidth? I don't think a satellite is in the middle of this triangle, instead I think a lot of terrestrial repeaters are used, and terrestrial TV dishes pick up signals that are bounced back into the atmosphere. With the amount of television channels that there are in the world, I have never heard of a satellite failing or a satellite being repaired, or a television satellite going down.

Great theory... how they have solar panels that last longer than any other and batteries that never need replacing and fuel for the thruster that never runs out is amazing.
@leviholdale6413
3 жыл бұрын
Commercial satellites generally last between 5-15 years and have enough fuel on board to last that long. They're also equipped with solar panels of high efficiency, usually around 30-34% compared to the 15-20% efficiency most ground solar panels absorb. So they do run out fuel. When they do, it can no longer be kept aligned to Earth and eventually fall out of orbit and gets burned up.

An excellent video, but i must say it needs a minor (but important) correction. There is no centrifugal force, just centripetal force and it is the equivalent resultant of the system. The gravitational force is a force that is part of this system and contributes (eventually along with other forces) to achieve the resultant of the system (the centripetal force). That`s an application of Newton`s Second Law.

Wait, so the signals are broadcast in a line, i thought EM waves travel outwards like a sphere of wave, wouldn't you need tons of satellites to broadcast a single signal to each antenna.
@gianluca.g
4 жыл бұрын
The video is slightly misleading. In reality the satellite emits waves as a cone that "lits" a specific region of the earth, pretty much like a very directional lamp would do on a table. At earth surface, the waves can be approximated as a plane moving torwards the ground (given the huge distance) so the receiving dishes have to be aligned perpendicular to that plane

I dont agree with your explanation about the difference between internet videos vs television. The internet videos buffer because there will a status check for each packet receiving and if it's not recieved then it is retransmitted by the source. This what enables us to forward or rewind videos on internet streaming. Coming to telivision its not the same the packets sent are not verified and this is the reason if there's a connection interruption the video doesnt resume from it stopped it start from the point from the recent packet which is the reason we miss some potion of the video and this why it doesnt get buffered.

1080 HD still is terrible with dish and DirecTV. Heck in another 5 or 10 years both services might end up disappearing anyway because the fact that fiber internet through isps can now deliver internet phone and TV with 4K compatibilities makes for a great experience plus when you get a little cloud in the sky your TV doesn't go out like it does when it storms heck you could get a little light rain with the two satellite companies and it go out on you plus it's just a lot of reruns so why spend $80 to $100 or more a month when most of us are going to be working most of that day and you're only going to get a couple hours anyway thanks first people LOL
