I thought that the bus scanned and identified students automatically. 😄 Have you noticed if all the switch positions on the panels are the same for all similar model buses? I have seen some that are (imo) out of order: red, yellow, door. We are told not to use the door switch to activate the red.

My understanding is some districts have scanners for marking students present on absent on their school buses. We aren't that high tech here yet. Most Blue Birds have a similar switch system. They are just scattered to different locations in the buses. When I started driving in 1985, the crossing lights switch was a long lever that turned left to activate and right to cancel and there was no 8 light system. Only red crossing lights.

I will ask our mechanics for a demonstration on replacing dash lights, no guarantees. Some of the dash lights on our buses are part of a Guage or one signal unit.

So from what I understand the WL Emergency can act as a Red Override Switch correct?

Yes, hit that switch and the reds are on whether your service door is open or closed. In California we have Child Check Systems on our buses. Sometimes when doing pretrips there isn't enough air in the system to close the service door. Once the system arms itself, you have about 90 seconds before the horn starts honking. So we just hit the WL Emergency switch and that stops the Child Check Alarm. Then when pressure builds enough to close the door, we close the door and turn off the switch.

That is illegal sir in the state of California. You are not allowed to activate your red lights with the door switch. This why California spec buses have that red override switch sir. per the VC your stop sign has to be fully extended before your doors are open. This is a shock to me, I hope your training department is not showing you guy this way.

This video was done to answer a question on how the lights and door works. This is not a training video. These are information videos on the equipment we school bus drivers get to use. If you listened to the video you would have heard that I do use the Emergency Warning light switch correctly.

@@jonusle2937I’m glad to hear that. Continue using it that way for all your stops, not just your escort stops. Thank you!

@@Rj20999most of the folks that follow my channel are busnuts like me. So when I answer questions with a video, I try to give the simplest answers. You wouldn't believe how much grief I get from out of state drivers telling me that they would be fired for leaving a bus load of students alone, let alone escorting them across the street.
