What a useful and informative video, Mark! After new watch collectors get over the initial excitement of learning about brands and watch types, this is exactly the sort of technical information that becomes so fascinating. I'm going to have to check out other videos in your watch and learn series.

Excellent video as usual. For everyday use, regular lume is more practical. During my day I often go into almost total darkness from a sunny daylight and that means my eyes are not adjusted but thanks to the incredible initial brightness of regular lume, I have no problem seeing the time. Also in the case of Seiko I have yet to wake up anytime in the night and not be able to see the time, as it is more than enough for adjusted eyes. Tritium on the other hand, although will look brighter to my adjusted eyes in the middle of the night, in my daily activities it is invisible when I enter a darkened room from the outside. After some time my eyes do pick it up, but I was eventually dissapointed, or should I say, regular lume suits my way of using watches more.

Watch Geek you dont know what you are talking about watch geek. Its not like you have an amazing youtube channel where you explain in detail every single function of a watch. Seriously. Get your facts straight. You seem like someone who never owned a watch in there life and specially G-shocks. You should also work on your english language. Its very difficult to understand what you are saying. Buddy, I’m joking😂😂😂. Was nice to see the very familiar W G on marcs page. You both are the only watch dudes i follow religiously.

I agree, I'm pretty sure tritium would be more useful for military use, where you'd be looking at your watch in the early hours of the morning before the sun comes up, and where you might have lost your low light vision from gun flashes, torchlight or other flashes.

Radium paint had zinc sulfide that was excited by the alpha particles from the radium and emitted light. Eventually the constant bombardment burned out the zinc sulfide and the dial no longer glowed. I have two old pocket watches with radium dials and they definitely excite a Geiger counter, since they’re almost as radioactive as the day the dials were painted.

Super interesting. You may or may not know this, and this may or may not be "fact" but... I've done a ton of offshore sailing - and we take adjusting to darkness seriously enough that we only use red lights at night (otherwise you come up on deck and can't see that ship on the horizon at night). Well rumor has it that the pirate eye-patch was actually used to keep one eye adjusted to darkness so that when you were fighting, and went below deck to murder everyone you could just move the patch to the other eye and you were all set with night-vision This of course is impossible to confirm, has problems with combat like depth perception - but, it's a fun theory.

It’s great for motorcycle riding too, if your bike is like mine and doesn’t have a clock on the display you can hold it up and never let off the gas if you wear your watch on your left wrist (like most people do) and you only need one hand as you don’t have to press any buttons.

Me too. So I'm a Luminox guy now. Upper end Luminox's. Lot's of them are so ugly and cheap. Between the Tritium and 24mm lug width. I find the 24mm makes it so much more comfortable to wear compared to Seiko's 22mm bands. I now own 2 Modern Mariner 6502's with SW200-1's and 1 Modern Mariner 6252 with Ronda 715LI quartz with 5 jewels gold plated movement. Nice stuff. Can't get into Seiko etc any more.

On the subject of our eyes being most sensitive to green light at low levels, green OLED sub-pixels are also the most power efficient of the red, green and blue sub-pixels which make up an OLED pixel (perhaps partly due to our eyes sensitivity). I set my Apple Watch 5 to a minimalist display in green, disabled the always ON display functionality and disabled all the apps I don't use and in doing so went from around 18 hour battery life, to 4-5 days.

I grew up in the era when all watches had tritium or radium. All the men had age spots on their wrist from where they wore their watches. Now I'm older and I got the same age spots around thirty years of age( I'm much older now!). When I was a kid I used to wonder why my old watch glowed all night and my new one didn't. It was so bright and the color was fascinating, I wonder how bad my retina is burned.

Since I got my marathon gsar I'm hooked on tritium vials. I started to keep the watch on when sleeping so when I wake up during night I can see that fantastic lum and see the hours and since the watch is very comfortable I don't feel it with a nice leather band. It is by far the best lum but the vials take some space so it make the watch thicker but I don't mind it at all. That marathon became my favourite watch almost instantly and it's my most accurate mechanical at +2 +3 /d constant even when keeping it on while sleeping. Fantastic watch worth every penny.

Great video! This is the stuff that is interesting to me. Other videos I've watched, they take everything apart and put back together so fast I can't keep up. And they rattle off the names of every piece of the movement so fast. This is my speed. I have a couple of old mechanical watches that I thought I might tinker with for fun, but I'm sure I'd get the parts mixed up and not know where they go.

I just figured out another of the things I like about your channel. No commercials in the middle of your videos. When watching KZitem videos, one of the things that really irks me is when a commercial is just started in the middle of a sentence or idea or whatever. Then when the commercial is over or can be skipped, you have to back up a minute or two in the video because the train of thought is lost. I'm not sure which is worse, those kinds of commercials or stupid loud background music which is both distracting and annoying.

I just watched this but can’t remember if you mentioned this. Initial tritium brightness depends on the size of the tube. I can walk into a dark room from a well lit room and can see the tritium in my compass immediately but with my Luminox I can barely see it. The larger tubes in the compass can be seen instantly without adjusted eyes.

I've had my watch for at least 10 years, and I think I've never seen it not glowing. I thought that the lum on my watch worked like this: superbright for 10 minutes, then normal brightness for about 12 hours. Never seen it go dark. The watch is on me at all times. So if it's been 30 minutes that the watch hasn't seen any light, you can say the same for my eyes. If I go to the bathroom, turn on the lights, when I turn them off, I still see the lum because it freshly picked up some light. I guess if I left it on the night stand and only turn on the bathroom light, maybe I would have noticed that.

I just got a Marathon GSAR and I found that after 15 minutes it was far more visible than my Seiko. This was after charging the Seiko under a lamp. For a few hours before I go to bed, my photo-luminescent watch probably isn’t going to be charging anyway, so under real world circumstances the tritium is always better at night, from what I’ve found. The tritium was much brighter than I expected. If you have okay vision at night, you’ll definitely be able to see it immediately if you walk into a closet from a bright room.

Modern watch lume (i.e. the type not based on radioactive decay); better called phosphorescence, is the delayed release of light energy, re-radiated at a longer wavelength after 'pumping' by incident electromagnetic radiation of a higher energy (shorter wavelength); technically: inter-system crossing from a singlet excited state to a triplet ground state; a dual electronic and vibrational transition. Long time since my undergrad chemistry days but hey, I remembered something! ;) Couldn't resist; sorry, but thank you for a very informative and excellent presentation!

Mark, Awesome video! Thanks. You are correct that tritium glows brighter after a time... But both Superluminova and Lumubright are still visible, with adjusted eyes, after 7 hours in darkness. I tested it last night by charging a 2002 Omega Dynamic b4 bed with a flashlight, and letting the bedroom light hit the Alpinist. Each for about a minute. Sure enough, the Omega was visible to me all night. (checking it on my wrist) and the Alpinist's hour hand was readable as well (not as thoroughly charged.) this morning at 7 AM. I am sure tritium would be brighter, but you may wanna reassure your customers that photo luminescent products still rock! Glad we've come a long way from Tritium paint! (My 1980 Victorinox tritium paint is useless)
