In 2013, Renee Benes bought what she believed was her dream home. Spanning at 3,400 square feet, the home seemed like the perfect setting for her family of five. But soon after its purchase, the home revealed itself to be a money pit as the family spent hundreds of dollars a month to maintain it with little money left to save. Then when Benes’ son wound up in the hospital, she had to rely heavily on credit cards to keep up with medical costs which quickly racked up debt. Realizing that their lifestyle was no longer sustainable, Benes decided to downsize her family’s home to one that is 2,000 square feet smaller. This downsize propelled Benes to simplify every component of her life, from groceries to clothing, and the family committed to paying off debt. Two years later, Benes now lives debt-free and she’s showing other families how they can downsize their life to achieve the same level of financial freedom.
