Catching about 20 different Pokemon Genwunner- thinks gen 1 is the best with no competition. I fall somewhere in average to shiny hunter as I do crazy challenges and I shiny hunt. @@coreflakes the issue with gen 1 is that its an insane amount of content crammed into not much space. the coding is actually ingenious -- nowadays you dont need to pay attention to every single bit so ypu can fit everything in. and in regular gameplay you wouldnt come across those glitches (looking at you here, bethesda, you have no fucking excuse) -- these come from deliberately testing the limits of the game. and it still runs stably instead of crashing. gen 1 games are a marvel of coding work, rather than a mess. the speedrunners just made a mess out of them and they *still work*

@rainpooper7088
4 жыл бұрын
Blep Bloop True, but that’s because Swift isn’t a 100% accuracy move, something like Psychic would be. The whole reason behind a move having 100% base accuracy is for it to be affected by accuracy drops and evasion boosts because the game (is supposed to be) using these values to calculate whether or not the move hits. Swift actually has no base accuracy stat because of it bypassing the accuracy/evasion checks. There’s no actual percentage to do calculations with, even though it’s factually 100% accurate. No idea why he said that when playing footage of him using Swift though.

In the case of red and blue, the cartridges are extremely constrained for memory, so it's pretty easy to overflow values into areas of memory that shouldn't be able to be changed by the player directly. More modern games don't need to be so stingy with their memory, and thus can afford actually catching overflows.

16:13 Swift does not miss even in Gen 1 because it bypasses the accuracy checks. The same happens with the master ball.

Just finished this run myself after watching your video. I used your guide for the most part, but hit a couple of snags at certain points and had to use some tricks from other runs. Biggest hiccup was attempting to warp to Giovanni from catching mewtwo, and I wound up using an escape rope and jacking into viridian gym instead. After that i fear my bag became irreversibly ruined, and I wound up warping using pokemarts to warp directly to each city and jack into any gyms that required it. All in all, a fun run, but my strats after splitting from the guide were definitely NOT optimal. Thanks for the great video, and the great time I had trying to replicate these tricks! :)

Found two wrong explanations: 1) The Saffron City guards just kick you "out" regardless of whether you come from outside or within Saffron. That's because the game assumes you can't get into saffron yet, so it will always kick you out of Saffron. 2) Jacking does not bypass any collision checks. The game checks for collision in front of your character rather than the direction you are pressing since the game assumes them to always be the same but Jack locks your character's rotation in place, so you are essentially phasing into the wall backwards. But as soon as there is any solid tile "in front" of your player model, you can not walk into any direction, even if you try to move into a non-solid tile.

If you are wondering why the 255 Esc. ropes let me tell you. 255 in binary is 1111 1111 which is one byte (8-bits). Now this number is supposed to be unsigned, meaning it is neither really a negative nor a positive number, though obviously we treat it as a positive number. For some reason the devs also needed signed numbers. In binary we can use the first from the left bit as our sign, either 0 for (+) or 1 for (-). In this specific address of the memory, the game uses that number to check how many items you have in your storage. But giving it the number 1111 1111 means it now has a value of -1 instead of 255 hence the glitch.

Haha the joys of older games. I just recently watched the WR for Majora's Mask and Ocarina of Time, and the hilarity of people finding out these methods to completely bug out the game to complete it quickly is fantastic.
