Fasting has always practiced in human culture especially when it comes to religious practices.
It's thought that when you eat too much especially glucose nd fructose it reduces the functionality of certain genes I human body which have a role in longevity.
Even if we look at the human body behaviour there are certain times when body itself demands less foods and most of these are times of crisis.For example when people fall ill one if the manifestation of the body is that it demands low calories and likewise when people are getting older their body demands less food and calories.
