Putting the pellet in backwards will significantly decrease the speed of the pellet which is also a reason maybe for a shorter penetration.
@christopherfisher128

Hard surfaces do not "give" as much as gel, flesh, etc, that is why the reversed pellet did not expand as much. The "firmness" of the packet you went through created a "form" for the pellet, keeping it from expanding further. The best results I have had on squirrels, is to take the factory "hollow points" and bore the top cavity out a bit further and widen it a bit. That, for me, has given the best compromise between penetration and expansion. thanks for sharing

Hey kendal you should give the gamo tomahawk pellets a try, I use those in of my pellet gun and they seem to have some great expansion and hit power, whenever I find the while cleaning the rabbits and squirrels I shoot with them
@nicholasp884

Your not considered how much more harder it's shaking and shocking the target because all the energy is spreading outward instead of driving the pellet farther through the target. I think backwards is better. The lighter weight pointed lead pellets loaded backwards usually totally lose the skirt in the entrance and the point keeps going. The hollow points loaded backwards do the same thing as well but with a bigger point that keeps going. The flat heads loaded backwards stay together and open up and stay together and penetrate the least. So far my favorite is the light weight pointed ones backwards, best results for me so far. With my Barra pump rifle I like doing a pointed pellet backwards with a bb behind it. They land pretty close to each other. Want to test it on a squirrel. Obviously much different then the rifle your using. Iv tested a bunch on gell. Including short blocks for exit wounds and long blocks for overall travel and wound chanel. Wish I could post a photo on the comments of it

If I would get an air rifle I would get an AEA HP Varmint. Mainly because they look cool and have very good 100 yard accuracy while being like 500 or 600 dollars. Which comparing to other air rifles that are much more expensive it's a pretty gosh dang good deal, plus is a smaller rifle not no super big one like the gauntlet.

you both make good points - i don't like the idea of experimenting on animals or causing unnecessary suffering but i reckon a backwards shot on a rat is well worth a go - still gonna kill it if you hit in the head but if you miss - double damage where you do hit it.

my prediction is that you dont NEED one and a half inches to kill small game, but it will die a bit slow......or maybe faster...theres only one way to find out...but correct me if im wrong but on a squirrel or bird barely any penetration is honestly need and the damage would be better, i mean c'mon we're not talking about a deer here
