I remember DW fandom in the 90s really having it in for his run, largely based on negative reviews in the mags and such; the BBC, knowing about this, held off on releasing many of his eps because they figured they'd sell poorly. Until finally they'd put out just about everything else, so finally they just scraped the bottom of the barrel...Only for fans, seeing his eps with fresh eyes after so long, to surprisingly respond very fondly to them! Don't get me wrong, much about those eps did, in fact, suck, but his portrayal of the Doctor went over a LOT better now, as fans discovered that he was nowhere as abrasive and unlikable as they'd remembered...

Peter Capaldi’s anxiousness, first doctor fanfare, and comment that plying the Doctor “won’t be easy because he hasn’t played the Doctor since he was nine” are all so adorable and lovely. I’ve always seen him as someone who was very honored to be in that role and humble and appreciative to the fans for welcoming and accepting him. It’s also a really sad watch to see when they gave him the Sonic Screwdriver prop on the set of “Twice Upon a Time” and he starts crying.

Peter Capaldi's better as a Doctor Who fan than as the Doctor himself. His sheer terror of playing his childhood hero came through in his performance so he had none of the confidence, power or charisma that the Doctor's supposed to have. Instead, he overcompensated by playing him as a sociopathic arsehole and hiding behind self-righteous speeches which, until The Zygon Inversion where he actually had something worthwhile to say, came across as a man desperately trying to pretend he's more powerful, important, knowledgable and experienced than he actually is. For all the grey hair on Peter Capaldi's head, I almost never believed he had lived for thousands of years. Matt Smith could convey how ancient the Doctor was with a single glance. Hiring a lifelong fan worked with David Tennant but that was lighting in a bottle. Clearly, Steven Moffat hoped it would strike twice but he overestimated Peter Capaldi's abilities.

In a BBC Radio 2 documentary (I can’t remember the date it was broadcast, but it was before his first episode) Chris was interviewed. @tomnorton4277
2 жыл бұрын
John Hurt doesn't get enough respect for his performance as the Doctor. That might be partially because he was already a legendary actor before Doctor Who but when he was cast as the Doctor, I hadn't seen him fully flex his acting chops onscreen. I'd heard him in a few voice acting roles (Kilgharrah and Woundwort were awesome) and seen his cameos in V for Vendetta and Harry Potter but voice acting is easier than physical acting because you don't need to worry about getting your expressions and body language right and the physical roles I've seen Hurt in didn't ask too much of him. Because I was going in without a great deal of knowledge about his career outside of everybody hyping him up as one of the greatest actors of his day, I was pleased to see that John Hurt's reputation had not been exaggerated. He really was one of the best of the best because he was under more pressure than any actor in the history of Doctor Who, with only Patrick Troughton and Matt Smith coming close, and he still delivered in spades. A lesser actor like Peter Capaldi or even Matt Smith would have buckled under the weight of being 1) the oldest Doctor ever, 2) a last minute addition to the 50th anniversary, 3) in danger of being upstaged by the 3 most popular Doctors of all time (yes, the Curator counts) and 4) not given enough time to fully flesh out his incarnation and grow comfortable in the role. Hurt had one shot to get it right and he hit the bullseye dead centre.

Trouble is, Peter Capaldi went too far in Season 8. I barely saw the Doctor at all throughout that season and I almost think of him as being the Valeyard instead. Now that I've actually seen some of Michael Jayston's performance, I think it was a huge missed opportunity to not bring him back and use him to emphasise how far the Doctor fell after Capaldi took over. The Valeyard could have been hanging out in Missy's Nethersphere because he's an amalgamation of the Doctor instead of a full regeneration - this would also explain why Missy was so desperate to be friends with the Doctor again - then at the end of Season 8, he escapes from the Nethersphere and goes back to confront Colin Baker.

@@plantainsame2049 Well it felt like a villain going through a redemption arc. That's not how the Doctor was supposed to come across. John Hurt, Christopher Ecclestone, William Hartnell and even Colin Baker were basically doing the same character arc and none of them came across as outright villainous. Ecclestone was, to quote Jacki Tyler, "all charm and smiles" when he wasn't brooding about the Time War. Hurt could actually get away with coming across as evil since he was IN the Time War but there wasn't a single wicked bone in his body. Hartnell changed his performance during the reshoots of An Unearthly Child to stop the Doctor from coming across as an outright terrible person. And Baker, even after strangling her in a fit of post regeneration paranoia, instinctively tried to rush to Peri's aid when he realised she was in danger. His immediate reaction was "I must go to her! I must save her!" and that was in his first story, before he started softening up. Meanwhile, Peter Capaldi was totally fine with throwing Clara under the bus, expected her to be okay with it because in his sociopathic mind he was "respecting" her (Peter Capaldi didn't even sound sincere when he said that), and even had the audacity to lecture Clara about disloyalty in the most self-righteous and hypocritical rant I've ever heard from the Doctor after she'd not only lost her boyfriend, but had also been putting up with the Doctor's shit for most of the season. And there was no sense of introspection or self-awareness in Peter Capaldi's performance. Every time he tried to be introspective, he came across as a shitty man trying to pretend that he's not a shitty man so that the only person who puts any effort into supporting him doesn't leave. The most obvious display of this is that Capaldi was constantly projecting his issues onto Clara, whether it's a life or death situation or petty shit like Matt Smith regenerating into an ugly git with no self-esteem, and expecting her to either sort them out or validate his behaviour. It was like watching an abusive relationship. If I were in Clara's place, I would have told Peter Capaldi to get fucked halfway through his first season. I might have even gone out of my way to murder him in the hopes that he'd regenerate into somebody halfway tolerable. The "Am I a good man?" arc was supposed to come across as a good man questioning himself whilst making genuine mistakes. It wasn't supposed to come across as a terrible man making calculated decisions to be a shitty person and having to learn basic decency from scratch.

@@plantainsame2049 Yes, but at least he didn't treat Susan like shit. Peter Capaldi treated EVERYBODY like shit, even the people he's supposed to care about. On paper, Peter Capaldi was supposed to come across as the good guy in Dark Water. In practice, I was on Clara's side. The Doctor was SO fucking self-righteous, hypocritical and preachy, lecturing Clara about doing shit that's totally fine when HE does it and even gaslighting her with "cut out the whining" after he'd been whining for the entire scene while she let him vent without complaint, that I would have happily watched her push him into the volcano. And that was because of Peter Capaldi's performance. That scene could have had me siding with the Doctor is a less obnoxious actor was playing him. For example, the Doctor should have said "cut out the whining" to himself because Clara wasn't the one whining. She was actually being the mature one because she said it was "absolutely fair enough" if he kicked her out.

Telling your story would mean a lot to us all, please consider it!

Believe it or not there are still many of us still alive. I was eleven and the program inspired my imagination as there had been nothing like it. I kept a Dr Who diary of every episode with my comments right up to the last one. I've got every existing video also. I got heavily into sci fi books in my teens and have written seven sci fi related books. I was sad when the series ended after Capadi but I have such fond memories of all the Doctors and looking forward to my weekly Saturday fix (though that did vary later on).

Haha, I guess I shouldn't sound so surprised, after all, I'm hardly a stripling myself; by which I mean that both my parents are still alive, and they are certainly old enough to have seen the show's beginning, had it been shown in the States (and if they had been into SF)! It's just that I've never heard older fans discuss their memories before, so that idea was somehow new to me. I still encourage ALL of you to reach out to creators, many channels would love to put together a compilation of your reminiscences, and I know the fans would love to hear about them! (For instance, my major questions are about the first regeneration: Did you know that was coming? Do you remember what the lost footage looked like? How long did it take you and your friends to get used to the new Doctor?)

Personally I love it when stuff makes it onto screen unleaked. Jo Martin's reveal, McGann's return in Night of the Doctor... it's such a huge geekbumps moment when they can pull it off! Regarding Troughton's tiny newspaper column, it actually makes sense to me. Replacing a lead actor for a successful show was unheard of at the time. Everyone involved probably wanted the least fuss possible made over it.

The hoodie and dark cloak SHOULD have been Jodie's Doctor / clothes. I like what we end up with too, no doubt - but damn does she scream "I'm the Doctor" in dark clothes. Also loved Capaldi's entrance, how he talked about it "I'm not the Doctor yet..." Wonderful Doctors, I remember the 80s ones, and the McGann announcement I didn't get until I saw a trailer on local FOX affiliate. Was crazy, loved McGann tho.

Even tho they obviously resized the clothes she regenerated in (imagine if 13 is flopping around in 12's oversized clothes the whole ep, lol), I still quite like that look on her, and kinda wish they'd kept, or modified, it. The first female Doc should have had some trouble coming to terms with the transition, instead of just instantly adapting to it, imo...

I love how far we went when it came to announcing the doctor. Originally with Patrick announced as the doctor it was just a small news article with very little fanfare and then with Matt it’s this very big surprise during a documentary that comes out of nowhere then Capaldi as the doctor he gets this huge announcement with a crowd and everything

I only vaguely recall pre-Matt Smith announcements, those memories, like the Paul McGann announcement, are lost to time. My absolute ideal way to announce a new Doctor would be like War and Fugitive Doctor, in universe as it happens. I know that's pretty unlikely to happen what with the constant threat of leaks but as a fan that would be the ultimate reveal - I remember that feeling when 10 got shot by a Dalek and started regenerating, I looked across at my brother (also a Whovian) and we were dumbfounded; it turned out to be fake but that was very exciting. I do remember the announcements of 12 and 13, being the most recent, and at the time I thought the whole studio thing with Capaldi was a bit cringey - more the fault of the way it was presented rather than Peter himself. So my second choice would be similar to Whittaker's announcement, that really beautifully shot, mysterious piece that revealed the new Doctor - no audience whooping and clapping, no daft presenters asking how they feel being the 'new Doctor Who' 🤦♀ just calm and in the Whoniverse.

I was so befuddled by that moment in the Confidential special back in 2009. Good to finally know it really was that jarring and it wasn't just me not paying attention like I always thought. I still remember having a mouthful of calzone during David Tennant's announcement and surprised I never choked or did a spittake. There was a split second where I mistook Jodie Whittaker's eye ball for Anna Freil's eye ball. Probably because she was my #1 pick and I was just willing my eye balls to see what they wanted to see, but whatever. I burst with excitement, then let down, then didn't recognize this blonde woman, then "Broadchurch girl"'s name came up and went "oh, yeah. She was great. Hardly recognised her". It was a rollercoaster. Anyway, great video. This was really worth the wait.👍

@MrTARDIS - I've got the press release from FOX announcing Paul McGann as the new DOCTOR WHO. It came along with an 8x10 B&W of McGann with the TARDIS from the same photoshoot all of the other photos came from. It was accompanied by a short video press kit that had what sounds like the interview with McGann that you quoted along with Sylvester McCoy and I think Segal. I don't have the press release right in front of me so I can't give you the exact date that's on it but I do know that it was in January. Great video!

My favourite was Capaldi because that was just such a great event, the build up and the reveal and all the excitement. I remember watching it as it happened and it was very fun. I personally think they’re going to try another John Hurt for the next one and not tell us who Jodie’s successor is until the regeneration actually happens. I think this because of how long it has been without an announcement and because the latests episode’s next time trailer showed Jodie starting to regenerate which implies they may have already filmed the change over and know who their next Doctor will be.

Superb, comprehensive exploration of all the announcements of Doctor Who casting. Two thoughts: 1. I really liked the short 1min video revealing Jodie Whittaker as the 13th Doctor. 2. What if: in Jodie's final special, as she regenerates, and there's all the yellow energy, the camera pans away and the new Doctor arrives but off-screen (!) with an indistinct sigh, an exhale of air. So we don't know who it is or even if they're a man or a woman (!) And we have to wait until 2023's Season 14 to see the new Doctor for the first time!

It’s insane that they’ve never kept it secret until the right moment. I’d love to see them do a reveal actually IN the episode. But failing that and knowing the show’s track record for blowing their load on announcements I think the Capaldi reveal was the peak of Doctor reveals. While I think Tennant’s surprise award acceptance announcement was the best departure announcement. That being said the show probably isn’t popular or well liked enough any more to do a televised announcement special. And the chance of The Doctor winning a TV award for their performance is slim

I was so excited when I saw Jodies reveal. The outfit was timeless and gorgeous, Jodie looked stunning and was glowing, and I thought we'd finally got away from the whole childishness of the ADHD Doctor bouncing around like a maniac. Then the episodes aired and Chibnall put her into a costume even Colin would have called tacky and we got the ADHD dialled up to 11. Truly, the fact the Doctor was now female was so wasted. Jodie is stunning. Her instagram and facebook is full of beautiful pictures of her in the most gorgeous outfits. She could have really played up the female side of the character, but we got a clown costume that removed any authority or gravitas from the role. They could have cast a man and apart from the odd comment it wouldn't have made a difference. There are many problems with the Chibnall era, but the biggest crime to me is taking one of the most beautiful women on television today and making her into a cheap, watered down Sylvester copy. Jo Martin did a better job as the female Doctor in her short screen time than Jodie did in her entire run. And I put that onto Chibnall not to Jodie. When you aren't given the material to work with there isn't a lot you can do.

Loved this trip down memory lane. I don't know if this helps but Sylvester McCoy revealed Paul McGann as the Doctor at a convention in late 1995, I think. This bit of information was then reported in a monthly fanzine called Time Brains 2013 in Sydney, Australia. I don't have the copy, but it was so early that the following issue the announcement was retracted as nothing could be found to confirm it. Then the issue after that it was confirmed again when the official news reports started rolling in.

As per the next announcement itself, I would prefer to see a Doctor incorporate their death/regeneration into a plan to defeat the villain. Imagine the villain finally defeating the Doctor, rolling on to complete their master plan (Master plan?) only to have a random underling that only showed up onscreen after the Doctor’s death flick the wrong switch, twist the wrong dial, and bring everything crashing down to a complete failure, and then look at the villain & say, “Yeah, that’s the thing about regenerations. You never really know what you’re gonna get until it happens” then smile, gather up any remaining companions, and fly away in the TARDIS.

This video has been an interesting video to watch. From Patrick Troughton being subtly announced in a short paragraph in a newspaper to Whittaker’s announcement at the end of that Wimbledon match. I still remember that excitement I felt when I saw that announcement. As for The announcement for the Next Doctor, I think it could be similar to how Dan was announced after Revolution of the Daleks. Although I think the BBC should make it clear that it’s the Announcement for the new Doctor by having a big notification at after the credits saying “Wait! There’s more.” And we see an empty corridor with the Tardis materialising. We see someone having their back turned to the camera as they walk out of the Tardis and then they slowly turn around and it’s the new Doctor. “COLIN MORGAN IS THE NEW DOCTOR” Basically better handled than Dan’s announcement as I legitimately thought it was an advert for a different show altogether.

What sticks in my mind about Peter Capaldi's announcement as much as the reveal, is Rufus Hound (who is fantastic) getting the "He knocks four times" prophecy wrong and Bernard Cribbins (who is even more fantastic) bailing him out. I'd love to see a huge announcement of a massive, big name actor to play The Doctor with all the fanfare and celebration then, about twenty minutes into their first episode they regenerate into the actor that will continue the legacy.

I've loved her era and am enjoying her specials but I am also eagerly looking forward to what is next and want to know who the 14th Doctor is already. The wait is killing me, all of us I think, and that's why I agree that the timing of her announcement was all wrong and it must've been to get ahead of news stories and rumors- which I'm glad they did, if true, because Jodie has dealt with enough media bashing as it is.
