Oh my, this episode brought tears to my eyes. It's so close to home. My oldest daughter has shunned me out of her life because I have deconverted. She won't have anything to do with me or her younger sister. My now deceased brother, who also had quit being a christian many years before had said I should just let my daughter find out on her own about my new beliefs, but I wanted to be honest with her. I did not expect this total rejection she is subjecting me and her sister to. Thank you for all you do here. It's a support system for me.

Part of my motivation for formally leaving my church (Mormon) was to get out in the open so any of my siblings or my nieces and nephews in the future wouldn't have to break that ground. I am soooo embarrassed to admit I used to believe all that biblical nonsense. It took me almost 18 months to read the WHOLE bible, not just the cherry-picked "feel good" verses fed to us by pastors and churches. When I got done, I was so full of rage and hate for this Yahweh/Jehovah thug that I couldn't function for 4 months after. The hatred literally consumed me. Fortunately, I am the one in my family with the money, so my relatives who are believers don't dare say anything to offend me because of my atheist status. They keep their mouths closed because they have no power over me. I am so happy I found this community. Deconverting was painful, but worth it. Life is so much happier now. I feel so free now that religion is no longer part of my psyche. Thank you all so much for what you do. 🥰

I would just like to say that I don't believe either but remember that being angry at the reprehensible character portrayed in the bible isn't a good reason to not believe. It's a good reason not to worship or subscribe to those tenets but being reprehensible doesn't have anything to do with whether or not something is real. Good reasons not to believe any particular claim are all related to logic, evidence, and how we understand reality to work. Not believing something is to not have anything that sufficiently compels one to believe. Sometimes it takes close examination to determine what we find compelling or not compelling. That bar is at a different level for every person and that level can change as we learn. I was fortunate that I was never indoctrinated in to these beliefs so I can't directly relate to the feelings of betrayal that de-converts have experienced but I can empathize because I can extrapolate from my own experiences of betrayal in other matters. Being misled is nothing to be embarrassed about. Especially when those who are misleading people are nothing more than victims of the same misleading claims. Religion truly is a virus of the mind. Changing one's mind is not weakness, it is exactly the opposite.

Disowning a child is, in my strong opinion, the ultimate expression of admitting failure as a parent. If I was a father, and my son, let’s say just an example, shot up a gay bar purely because he hates homosexuals, I would be forced to disown him because I failed as a parent to teach him right from wrong, as well as to teach him not to hate or be prejudicial. Even more than that failure, I would feel like such disownment would be because I could no longer look him in the eye without feeling contempt. For a parent to feel such a way about their own offspring, not because of heinously harmful acts they committed but because of a philosophical disagreement, to me shows not only a failure of parenting, but an abject failure of being a decent human being. Disownment is an extreme step. I can only conceptualize extreme scenarios where I could even consider it, and even then it’s mostly under the condition that my loved one felt no remorse or regret for their actions. I disowned an aunt, and for that she had to sue my grandfather immediately after my grandmother died of cancer, in pursuit of profit from a house my aunt neither paid into nor ever paid rent for living in. This is after a lifetime of abusive and exploitative behaviours. If I found out a family member, friend, or colleague of mine disowned their kid for being an atheist or gay or something like that I’d never speak to them civilly again.

If a family member disowns you because you don't believe the exact same things you do then they never loved you in the first place and aren't worth having anything to do with. My maternal grandmother was an avid churchgoer but religion was never mentioned outside that one hour on Sunday mornings. She never tried to indoctrinate us grandkids and as far as I know never indoctrinated her own children either. Her daughter, my mother never went to church and there was religion at all on dad's side of the family but when we stayed at gran's in the school holidays everyone went to church because it made gran happy. She would never have dreamed of disowning anyone though. At about 14 or 15 I put my foot down and refused to go to church anymore. I'd never believed a word of the nonsense since I was tiny anyway. It was never mentioned again. She was certainly an ardent believer in the sky pixie but family came first by a massive margin.

Definitely can't argue against the possibility, "There could be creator deity that's never made it's presence known to humans...", as you put it, because no argument FOR the existence of such a deity/deities has been posited. It's FOR the possibility that has the burden of proof. Yes, there could be a creator deity that is completely unaware of humans, who made the self-sustaining universe in a way that eventually (13.8 BYL) resulted in humans naturally, but the time for those humans to actively accept that claim would be when there is sufficient evidence specifically FOR it. Unfalsifiable claims are just that - unfalsifiable. Can't be proven false or true. The only time to believe an unfalsifiable claim is when the 'belief in it' (rather than it being verifiably true) IS what provides some perceived benefit (like every religion ever, and the reason most religious claims are unfalsifiable). The perceived benefit comes from belief in the claim, whereas if their claims were falsifiable (a good thing - for finding accurate data), if/when proven false, that perceived benefit ends.
