@@sb113.agreed with the above. It’s not as hard as you would think (not that it isn’t hard, it does still work your forearms) & alignment tweaks can be made to ease this up. I am pretty sure basically everyone that goes on about how hard it is without power steering probably has never even driven a car without power steering…

For everyone wondering. This is not how you steer an F1 Car. Most of the Driving is done by a Hydraulic system, which is why it's nigh impossible to turn the wheel without electronic assists.

@@ARM0RP0WER yeah. Depending if the pinion is in front of or behind the main axle (point of rotation) it will turn the right or wrong way. The pinion is moving correctly. The driver is steering correctly. Gear is rotating in a manner that opposite to the rack’s lateral movement

The problem with this animation, is that the rack gear is traveling in the opposite direction of the pinion gear. In order for this to work properly, the rack with either have to be ON TOP of the pinion, or the tie rods connect to the back of the steering knuckles (behind the pivot points of the knuckles).

Yes while it does use a rack and pinion system as the framework these days F1 cars have a lot of electric and hydraulic assist that can move the steering track precisely given some manual input. It is usually a linear actuator or a hydraulic piston that moves the rack according to the driver input but the physical connection (before steering by wire) was still a rack and pinion system.

I'm pretty sure the inside wheel of a F1 car turns less than the outside wheel (to prevent the inside wheel losing grip as the weight shifts to the outside wheel), so the steering would be more complex than this simple animation.

under very high frontal load the bar CAN crumple, but the steering wheel never actually impaled someone in f1, at least not after 1990, because of the seven point harnasses the drivers have as seatbelts

I had to look this up as it looked wrong as hell. But to my surprise it is much more accurate than I thought! Previously I thought F1 steering was entirely electronic with no mechanical link between controls and wheels. But it turns out that electronic steering is not allowed and there must be a mechanical system. However from what i have read the steering racks are hydraulically assisted so more complicated than in his diagram and as others have said the rack moves in the opposite direction.

This is showing parallel steering. Most F1s use something called Positive Ackerman Steering. The front wheels don't turn at the same rate depending on the direction of the turn. It helps with traction.

I had a lawn mower that had steering like that.. it only turned left eventually but it worked

What id like to see is how the gear is attached in a way that it can move like that but also still handle toque i cant think of way its like that and usually im amazing with wechanics
