In this video, I share my second review after more than a month with Starlink setup and we look at the results from a constant 24 hour speed test session!
I only stumbled across this video via a KZitem recommendation so apologies if you are actually an RF engineer and know a gazillion times more about this stuff than I do but when you said towards the beginning of the video that you were a bit surprised at how little the dish moves do remember that it’s actually a quite sophisticated phased array antenna with just under 700 elements (someone did a detailed tear-down - destroying their antenna in the process!) so it’s actually electronically steering its uplink beam probably across something like a 120 degree cone centred around the axis perpendicular to the face and it also uses phase differences on the incoming signal to improve noise rejection for off-axis reception so it by no means needs to be pointing even close to directly at the satellite it is communicating with at any given time. Pretty amazing technology at this price point and consumer volumes that it will get too once roll-out really ramps up. Nice detailed video by the way. Thanks.

Wow. No I'm not an RF engineer, but do dabble a little in electronics. I had no idea what the signal was steered or guided using the multiple antenna rather than the mechanical system. Very insightful and well explained. Thank you!

@1:35 " The other comment is that, yes it should be mounted up at the apex, the highest point of the roof on a pole " Just saying that SpaceX provides a fairly good apex mounting bracket. Anyway, thanks for this Dan, I'm too considering Starlink, but further North than Bristol :)

Elon Musk has tweeted a few weeks ago that Starlink is great for use with RV's (motorhomes). I think I read they charge a USD25 per month surcharge for such portable access and you have to use it on the same continent. Thanks for your work on the connection data :) Any chance of an update? TIA Paul

I don't use it anymore. It was pulling too much power at 150W constant.. in the UK, the roaming package for motorhomes was around $150 per month.

Thanks Dan for the update, some interesting info provided, I was thinking about getting it but I like to game in the evenings but I’m still unsure if it will or could handle FPS games or if the lag or drop outs would have me going mad 😂😂 , have you tried it gaming if so what or how did you find that ? Thanks

Hi Dan , I game on console, if you have any call of duty games ? Warzone or any first person shooter type games where you need the response to be quick would be great , if you pc game I’m sure the results would be the same, thanks in advance for any updates you give 👍

Good info, thanks for sharing. Hopefully you dont leave it on such an intense speed testing schedule all the time. If everyone using Starlink did that, thats a huge amount of wasted bandwidth that could be put to better use!
@DanSohan
3 жыл бұрын
Definitely, and the actual bandwidth used was small, it was only a few 100 mega bytes in the 24hours. I think the starlink can handle more than we know. Looks like there is plans to deliver gigabit connections in the UK, according to 1 article I read?
@DanSohan

@@SB-zl4mu I doubt it will be that much. But it's a new government plan to roll out 1 gigabyte across UK. Dont know if this is a starlink venture, but might be.

You can trust the app. It shows you where the antenna will look for satellites. Placing the dish where a quarter of its desired field of view is blocked, is detrimental to performance. Until more sats come online, most of the time the dish can only see 1 sat. If you then have a building in the way, you get an outage. Move the dish to an open area and it will point more straight up.

I've tried it in various areas around my house, with various views of the sky. It always points north north west. While the app suggests the correct orientation would be south.

Have you seen any improvement in speed/stability since you first got it as they improve the system? I’m moving soon to an area with no fibre internet and a max estimated speed of 20mbps so I’m considering this as a solution.

You mentioned that you are planning on moving the dish around to try other locations for it. Have you seen this in the Starlink Beta FAQs? "Starlink satellites are scheduled to send internet down to all users within a designated area on the ground. This designated area is referred to as a cell. Your Starlink is assigned to a single cell. If you move your Starlink outside of its assigned cell, a satellite will not be scheduled to serve your Starlink and you will not receive internet. This is constrained by geometry and is not arbitrary geofencing.“
@DanSohan
3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I have read that. It doesnt mention how big the cell it, so I'm going to give it a go when we are allowed further than a few miles from home (lockdown!)
@craski
3 жыл бұрын
I dont think the cell size is a concern for the average home owner, there are several in US/Canada that are testing taking them several kilometres away from their houses and still working but it is definitely limited.
@floks700

uninterruptable area are 250 km from station. and up to 500 km max range. its not lock for starlink location (may be) its geometry. from 300 to 500 km its time from 100% to 1-5% of internet. its for 1 station around (north of France). if you have 2 station, ex in Manchester, you have 100% time and low latency any time.

Starlink users should ignore this video. Dan has provided a lot of data, but Dan has not followed the Starlink installation recommendations. He should either install it as recommended, return it, or wait for a few years until Starlink offers a service that will meet his poor installation requirements.

It was about £600 for the kit, and £80 a month.. I've not seen speeds anywhere near 900mbps, most 150 or slightly more. I should run a similar test again soon to compare

Lol. Yeah, the 6ms ping value was definitely some bad data. That value would break the laws of physics because it would mean you had been sending signals faster than the speed of light. The theoretical minimum for a straight there-and-back with no dwell time at any of the stages is ~7.3ms.
@DanSohan

It wouldn't be the the first time scientists had a result like that and claimed to beat the light speed barrier, only to find it was an error! Prefer the idea that we momentarily detected a warp in space time at that exact moment.
