Why the Swedish messaging was experienced as "alarmist" by Finnish ears were because a) Finland never let down their guard b) Finland never stopped investing in military deterrence c) does not have a deficit of readyness and capability to adress. Sweden needs to mobilize a sense of urgency in our population, as in waking ppl up, in order to create the conditions we need to fund more, re-develop old capabilities and more that is required to re-establish something Finland never lost. Conversly, the historic habits in Finland has always been to be very much unspoken about the self-evident threat to Finnish national security; and when actually talking about it, doing so with very small letters, and with as few words and sentences as possible. Our culture around talking about national defense is just different in some areas, although our fundamental approach to a total defense concept are very much similiar in nature, beyond our shared history and nordic similarities in general.

When Minna talked about how the whole society is prepared to defend the country in many ways I thought about my country, the USA, and how fractured our society is. Everybody wants things done but they want someone else to do it. Every problem is somebody else's problem. This is a huge challenge for a big country that is full of isolated communities that are being programmed by nefarious actors to distrust and hate each other. The unity in Finnish society is inspiring, but I can see that it comes from having their eyes open about who their neighbor is and what it is capable of. The biggest threat here is internal.

If you only serve a year you get trained as an enlisted foot soldier. If you sign up for additional time or active reserve service you get additional training. If you sign up to return after college you get college assistance and if you complete college you become an officer and you don’t serve as enlisted.

Canada doesn’t have the same preparedness, yet they are the neighbour to Russia in a circumpolar sense with an Arctic archipelago and approaches to North America by waterways that are practically undefended. The emphasis is via NORAD but practically zero preparedness for Russian incursions via waterways, and zero preparedness in terms of missile defences. Canada is also saddled with the same anti-war mentality of the 1960’s with no political will for defence and no awareness for geopolitics except to hold the US accountable for everything.
@gagamba9198

An honest and accurate assessment. Canada's defence is stuck repeating tales of WWII and Korea. Its defence spending was less than 2 per cent of GDP in 1973, and only for a few years in the 1980s was it at 2%. Five decades of negligent under investment. Last year Trudeau told Nato members that Canada would 'never' meet 2 per cent.
@mukkaar

Honestly it's pretty big surprise. Canada is close to US, so ofc its pretty safe. But this could allow Canada to hyper focus on something. Like navy. I mean that's main way Russia or any other enemy would potentially attack. And it would be huge benefit to allies in case of some NATO war. Other benefit would be commercial, since that focus would give competitive advantage. US also has had issues with procuring ships for a long time, it costs them a lot to do.

Canada had the third largest navy in the world after WWII. That’s gone, though. Canada builds ships for the UK, and bought cast-off submarines from the UK defence industry. Canada also monitors the water ways such as the Gulf Of St. Lawrence and the Georgia Straight.

Everyone else scratching their hair off on how to get people to join the military. Finland gives notice to reservists to get into the shape of their lives. What actually needs to be addressed in this assessment is the willingness of the people to actually get up in arms and defend their Nation, and in their lies the dilemma. With a clear majority homogeneous societies like Finland, Norway, Poland and the Baltics to some extent it's not a problem. Not to mention, land invasion has been made extremely painful if not impossible. You'd have to cross swamps, rivers, hundreds of lakes, and dense forest terrain with your troops, filled with mines, with only a couple of heavily gaurded bridges to cross your tanks, while being snip ed from every direction, with the force of 70 F35s war jets dropping bombs. Additionally Finland has the largest artillery army in Europe.

Do you want to know the meaning of the name Ålander? Åland (that is the Swedish name, Ahvenanmaa in Finnish) is the autonomous region of Finland located in the Gulf of Finland, between Finland and Sweden. It is an archipelago - a collection of islands, with Swedish speaking people. They have many rights and not a whole lot of duties to Finland. Basically freeloaders. But they are our freeloaders so Russians who think this should be invaded, can go a suck a duck. Finland will defend it and NATO can be called to back up the defense, so no chance ryssän paskanaamat. Oh yeah, Sweden is also in NATO. So protection is coming from all directions.

A Swedish general said that they are likely before Finns there, if Russia tries any green men invasion. The main island is so close to Stockholm that Finnish and Swedish military have been thinking about strategies. The border of delimitarised area is much closer for Swedish navy to main island.

Either they're going through it, have gone through it, their father, mother, son, daughter, brother, sister, nephew, niece, huspand, wife, friend or acquaintance is going through it or has gone through it. Every window is involved in national defence." My dad said nothing, but his expression while holding a tear told everything.

Shoot and Scoot is very important in this war and when it comes to Shoot and Scoot then the Swedish FH77 Archer is the current best system in the world. That's true. We do have armour propelled and mobile artillery as well, however the most of the artillery is towed. As discussed, our budgeting must be tight and smart. We need the firepower, but we can't afford hundreds of Archers for example. The towed ones work in the missions they are planned for and they bring the firepower we desperately would need. Those artillerymen are training to be surprisingly swift to move when needed. Though we wouldn't mind at all having those Archers of yours if shit hits the fan one day 🤗

Russia doesn't need to mount a military operation against Finland for very obvious reasons. Firstly, it's not a prime target in terms of strategic utility. Secondly, after NATO collapses there will be no reason to invade as Finland will return to its previous posture of uncomfortable neutrality. Barring an unforeseen event like Putin having a stroke, here's how things will almost certainly play out: (i) Ukraine is forced into a "peace" treaty that simply enables Russia to continue its conquest with less expenditure of men and materiel. The West rejoiced that "peace" has been secured (much like the Brits were so happy that Chamberlain brought back his little piece of paper from Hitler); (ii) Russia invades one of the Baltic nations in order to save Russian speakers from fascism. Latvia is taken in 3 days while NATO sits and does what NATO does best: nothing at all, because its response plan requires 30 days to activate; (iii) the two other Baltic nations sign "peace treaties" with Russia that require them to leave NATO, which they do; (iv) Trump, back in the White House, declares the USA won't get involved in "loser fights" in Europe and then European NATO members have to admit they have zero capacity for self-defense. So one by one they all sign "non-aggression treaties" with Russia that involve sending huge amounts of money to Russia to "compensate" it for "decades of European aggression against the peaceful Russian state." So that's why Finland joining NATO didn't matter and why Russia will never need to invade Finland. Why fight a war when you can win thanks to the spinelessness and ineradicable stupidity of the West?

@@NK-qw5vt NATO would crush Russia if it ever tried! Look how Russia has lost tens of thousands of men attacking a country outside of NATO. Russia has to hide its Black fleet away from a country without a navy lol. What happened to Russia stopping Ukraine from exporting grain? Russia is a joke.
