The ice is so thick, you're absolutely safe with a few meters of distance. At that thickness, the icebreaker really only cracks the ice right in front of it.

Finns were used to moving on ice, and here they happily welcome an icebreaker 😊 And as for the coffee…. Before, it had been a luxury in Finland. But in the 1920s, ordinary citizens also had access to it ☕️

Insane people, to walk so close to the icebreaker. You could end up on one slab, slide towards the ship and get crushed between the very heavy ice pieces. If you survive that, you might get sucked into the propeller, and if that does not happen either, you might end up below the ice and drown. The best case scenario is, you get rescued quickly and then are wet and cold, so you need to change into dry clothes within about 10-30 minutes or you die of freezing. Where exactly the ice breaks is hardly predictable, but with increased distance the chance of a crack forming goes to near zero. It would be interesting to know, how a graph would look like, if you plot the frequency of various crack distances from the bow of the ship.
