This is an incredible video. I grew up in the capital city of Senegal, and the French grip is absolutely omnipresent. Not only in economic terms, but also culturally. Wealthy families send their kids to French school. We watch French tv. Our supermarket chains are French. Our gas stations are French. The French military bases are everywhere. We've had 4 presidents since the independence, with two French first ladies. The French government decides which infrastructures are to be built. Emmanuel Macron decided that we need a high-speed train to connect the city to the airport, which will be built by a company belonging to a close friend of his for a cost of 3 billion euros. Now, this wouldn't be that bad if we weren't a country that barely has money to maintain its hospitals. The worst was seeing the French-backed candidate somehow win the presidential elections three months ago despite the fact nobody could stand the guy (he's the one with the sunglasses in the first few seconds of the video). Even worse, maybe, is seeing the silence of the world in the face of this.

@Stephen Jenkins Britain had a decolonization process , they moved from colonial government to dominions with great deal of autonomy before complete independent common wealth . France had the opposite process , after world war 2 Charles de Gaulle tighten French grip on former colonies by creating a " confederate state " a complete absorption of territories and authorities , technically he removed any autonomy or independence or even sovereignty if there were little or none existed in former colonies , they were no longer French protectorate , but part of French territories and sovereignty, so basically he were asking for direct war to the death with their colonial subjects . Britain had experiences with American revolution, so they avoided as much war blood shed as they could , in exchange for free market liberal societies and independent friendly former colonial states , whom they wish could become invaluable allies like the US had become .

This actually seems less well-researched than some of his other videos, as I said elsewhere: I really like his content, but I have to say this video is unusually unnuanced. For example, it seems to suggest that the african frank is an overall negative for the african countries involved (quite possible) and the leaders who try to get rid of it end up being assasinated or overthrown. What is not mentioned is that several countries HAVE in fact left CFA and started using their own currency. Mali left and re-joined later, and some countries that were never french colonies joined as well. The whole thing seems a lot more voluntary Than it appears in this video. Of course, the factors in corruption, supporting of dictators and general economic exploitation mentioned are very real as well. I would just prefer a less one-sided description.
@apacheglider
5 жыл бұрын
@@rathalos1522 but one could argue that the fact that some countries (re)joined CFA is not due to its positive aspects to their economy, and maybe due to personal/political interests of their leaders .. don't you think ? voluntarism of the people is not their leaders' otherwise what is your other side ?

@@apacheglider Oh yes, I believe that's very possible as well. It's similar to how state loans given without any requirements on corruption prevention are beneficial to the recipient countries' leaders, but detrimental to the country as a whole. I just mentioned it as an obviously missed aspect of this video. I'm by no means an expert on the subject, so I'm not saying CR's conclusion is wrong. It's just that if I can find something in my 5 minute google search that contradicts him and it's not mentioned in the video... I feel it's lacking something.

I always learn from these but found this one especially illuminating. China is planning to invest in China with its silk road initiative. From the wording in the introduction to their plan for Africa, they will do it to free the continent from colonial interests. If that is their real intention, it could free Africans from France. (It seems doubtful that America would state such a plan.) For me, this puts a new spin on that and on the attitude many in France have toward African migrants. This is the best channel on geopolitics I have seen. Thanks for filling in my knowledge of how the world works.

If you are truly a historian and for some reason you are short on global information (though there is an abundance of information especially if you "look" beyond what the "COLONISER" and its minions have "orchestrated" and "provided" for people to see and study) in respect of Africa maybe read a recent book titled "Africa 101: The Wake Up Call". But as a Historian one would expect that you are familiar with the realities of a continent as huge as Africa. A continent where the overwhelming majority of raw materials that , knowingly/unknowingly, is what makes up much of what makes your life in a high tech world "a life" come from. After all for decades so much has been written from as far back as the works of Walter Rodney through Basil Davidson, Ali Mazrui, and a host of non historians [and also non neo-colonial sources] that have in one way or another constantly been trying to show the world that a deeper and objective historical look with honesty and integrity is needed when it comes to Africa....as Africa really never obtained independence but rather it was more of a "concession/change of tactics" so to speak. Do your due diligence/objective research as if you are not afraid to report and document "truth" you will find there is a treasure trove of "Secret History" just waiting to be dug up by anyone courageous enough to look in the mirror. I say look in "the Mirror" because you may be overwhelmed with what you may unearth if you have a conscience and it may impeded your "honesty" if you fall short on integrity and dignity. It's all there. You just have to try not to forget to make sure you go to "Spec Savers" before you start researching...just look and look DEEP enough you will find!

There has been nothing but constant reports on what France has been doing in Africa since the fake independence of these nations. There also loads of reports about the annual taxes these African nations are forced to pay France. The people have been crying out for decades and it's been reported widely for decades. It's so well known that stupid movies and comic books use the corruption as their theme. The ability to ignore the horrors that have been taking place is on the same level as the Germans who claim they didn't know their Jewish neighbors were being hauled away and murdered. Amazingly inhuman.
@peffiSC2source
5 жыл бұрын
@@Smile2Joy Wow! What a truly disgusting and toxic comment. First of all, no one in this comment chain said they were completely ignorant of western powers exploiting Africa or other nations. That's just something you made up to feel superior in a youtube comment section, which is frankly pathetic. All I said was that I didn't know about this very specific avenue of financial dependency between African countries and France. And some people upvoted that. I'd wager a good portion of this channels viewers at least heard the term neo-colonialism but this particular instance is definitely not common knowledge. So stop making up these strawmen to tear down while sniffing your own farts. Also, it's so ridiculous that you extrapolate from my comment that I am somehow ignoring these issues, let alone equate me to the population of Nazi Germany. I feel like due to my education and the fact that I am a German, where education about the Holocaust and history in general is very important, your comment is insensitive and rude on multiple levels, both to the victims and families of atrocities commited by Nazi Germany as well as me personally and the German people today. It's a pretty disgusting comparison in the first place, basically equating financial dependency and exploitation to the biggest industrialized mass killing the world has ever seen, let alone bring it up to a German as some sort of guilt-trip argument (even if you didn't know beforehand). Nowadays a lot of things are going on. Were you aware of the fact that the Karen peoples are getting violently supressed in Burma by the government for decades? Have you been keeping track of how many people died in the Russia/Ukraine conflict? Did you know that Saudi Arabia already executed more than a hundred people this year by capital punishment? Did you know Transnistria is even still a thing? Did you know that 8500 people were murdered in Mexico in the first three months this year alone? Did you know that the drug war in the Philippines already cost 12.000 people their lives since 2016? Did you know that homosexuals are heavily prosecuted in Russia and there were gay purges in Chechnya as recently as this year? If you answer no to any of those, you are apparently amazingly inhuman and comparable to people tolerating atrocities on the level of the Nazis. Just because you didn't know any of these particular things. You know what your comment does? It turns me away from the issue you feel strongly about. You are unnecessarily hostile to a person that clearly has shown that they are very much on your side in wanting these problems to stop and to make them more known. Instead you shame me because I didn't know this one particular thing. You immediately and falsely jump to the conclusion that I must not care about any of the issues in Africa. You then basically equate me to a Nazi Germany citizen and call me inhumane. You can be lucky this is my field of study and I will continue to want to know about these issues, regardless of what some absolute cunt on the internet calls me. Because if I was just a normal person writing this, my first reaction to your comment would be to tell you to get fucked and never care about any issue like that ever again. Because if I am already getting shamed and insulted for not knowing one single particular thing about an issue, why would I put myself through the process of learning anything else? In short, you are a wannabe elitist, pretentious, rude, inconsiderade and toxic piece of shit that needs to learn some humility and grace before they use the internet again. Rethink how you behave or you will be a massive detriment to your cause and whatever else yo ucare about.

@@ng3898 I know that very well. I'm an economist and understand how they utilise these resources very well. The CFA franc and the current setup are a perfect way how to receive a significant GDP boost without doing much and then giving those countries "a helping hand" that requires all of the suppliers and subcontractors for state project, food, aid or anything to be French. Those countries do not control their resources, nor they control their currency. Hell, even the reserves are stored in Paris. Those puppets are not independent and are just corrupt puppets allowed to rule by Paris. Perfect colonialism. They "are free", France gets the resources, they get protection and can do whatever they want in their countries without the need to do anything for the citizens. Just look at figures. Countries with CFA franc are much poorer and have worse economic growth. I don't really care about them at all, but find it funny that despite such significant advantage from resourses and exports that are not in a competitive environment and balance of payments and reserves the French get, the French economy is very shit comparing to Germany or even Britain, despite Brexit.

@@ng3898 England always had a smaller and weaker economy after the empire collapsed. Only a couple of years the British economy managed to overtake the French one. Britain had even worse bumps back in the day. The ERM pound collapse in the 90s. Before Maggie Thatcher came to power, Britain had collapsing economy and unlike France or Germany after WW2 wasn't growing much, hence UK was called "the sick child of Europe". All of the old industries are long gone. Car manufacturing, coal mines, steelworks, all industry has been pretty much shut since 70s because it was less making. North is still much poorer due to factories and mines closing 40 years ago. All those closures, however unpopular saved the economy. UK is growing strong because all inefficient industries closed and economy is fully focused on services, innovation and high tech manufacturing. France is too inefficient now. The labour market is too regulated and it's too much of a risk to hire, France is by far the largest receiver of the EU common agricultural policy subsidies. Government tries protecting jobs and clinging on to old industries. If mines weren't closed back in the day, maybe the economy wouldn't focus so heavily on financial services, which are bread and butter for the country now. France needs to do a few painful reforms with regards to labour market, subsidies and trade unions, but knowing the French love for social things, that would be a very tough pill to swallow and governments have been trying to do it.

But apparently the "anti imperialist" National Liberation Front has been tremendously unable to cope with the "evils" of French imperialism even more than 5 decades after Independence and to properly improve the standard of living of Algerians so that they do not have to emigrate from his country. PS: Also that is a shit train of reasoning, even if we apply that logic the only countries with a moral obligation to receive immigrants should be, ultimately, France, Great Britain and Belgium. What role did countries like Ireland, Sweden, Poland or Hungary play in African instability? None. In fact, if the reception of immigrants were absolutely conditioned by the damage of the past, then the countries of South America should not receive a single Venezuelan. and the group of countries that should receive immigration would be quite small.

This video is extremely misleading, but I'll stick to five points: 1. The video strongly implies that adoption of the Franc CFA is forced or at least that trying to opt out will have the leaders of the country deposed or murdered, this is exceedingly weird as there are countries that have abandoned it: Guinea in 1960, Madagascar and Mauritania in 1973. Furthermore a third country, Mali, abandoned it in 1962 and opted back in in 1984 after a disastrous run where they were unable to control the high inflation. To top it off 2 non-french ex-colonial nations employ this currency, Guinea-Bissau and Equatorial Guinea. 2. There's the implication that France somehow profits from the monetary reserves it keeps, this is patently false: France is not allowed to use that money and has to pay interests back to the CFA members. 3. The video strongly argues that CFA members gain nothing and indeed loose a lot from the agreement going so far as to contradict itself: in one breath it decries the inability of CFA countries to devalue their currency but in the next it decries that when the Franc CFA did actually devalue it their economies went down the drain. This is made even more ridiculous when seeing that as I already pointed out, Mali once left and had it's economy become so unstable it decided to come back. 4. That newspaper looks very good but it's about a french education reform not some scandal or meddling in africa. 5. The Franc CFA was created in 1945 so some 15 years before the independence of the french colonies, it's original intent was to protect the french colonies from the brutal devaluation suffered by post-war France. Mind you I'm not saying France is an angel of all encompassing mercy that's saving the CFA from themselves, it certainly profits greatly from the overall situation just not in the grotesque "I take your money" way the video claims. The whole point of the CFA is to ensure those countries have a more stable economy and to facilitate trade with France to ensure french investment and business can prosper in the region, that's where baguette makes the money. Edit: This also ignores the existence of the Eco, a projected common currency for these countries independent of France that France hasn't stopped. The only reason it hasn't already been put into circulation is the countries' inability to meet the requirements they themselves have agreed on to make it work.
@matthewhemmings2464

I though the video and it claims were extremely unprofessional and lacked any form of evidence or truth too. Like you, this isn't to say France is perfect, or doesn't have any interests in this system itself... but surely there is no proof or even argument pointed to regarding the claims. There is corruption? Yes, corruption is an issue in most African and developing nations. How is France and the CFA contributing more compared to others. Western firm profit from the system? Yes, Western firms are notable for their exploitation of the African continent, its no news. How does the CFA contribute more compared to others? There were coups and Assassinations of leaders? Yes, coups and assassination of leaders are common in developing post-colonial nations, how is the CFA compared to others? France defends its interests in the region? Yes, former colonial powers try to defend their interests across the globe, how is the CFA compared to others? And the list goes on. This video is all claims, with absolutely no explanations and evidence... Very disapointing.

@Persian Lion You know usually people avoid answering to a near year old comment, it's even worse in this case cause the "hijack" of the eco hadn't even happened at the time my comment was written. And lets talk about that, even assuming this is all a French plan and not the affected countries trying to actually get the eco before the end of days how is that a bad thing? It still brings all the changes the eco was meant to, in particular an end to the central bank of the west african states having to deposit half it's reserves in france and the french leaving from it's administration. The move was a strict reduction of the capacity of the french government to directly affect the area so painting it as some kind of master plan of colonialism isn't just disingenuous: it's plain weird. I am glad it makes you happy to google news articles, not really understand the events they talk about and then insult randoms on the internet, it's not exactly my jam but you do you.

@Persian Lion so the whole project is both a "war with the French" while the "french puppets" have been a part of it from it's inception? While it is true that with the new project is a lot more restricted geographically than the original ECOWAS goal it is also actually happening while ECOWAS wasn't moving forward. And no Jacques Chirac did not in fact say that, that was a comment made by a french opposition journal on him that translates to something around the likes of "Chirac is one of those for whom without Africa France would become third rank power". This wasn't an actual position of his, it was an attack by opposition press.

AD1. Well you do not really disprove his points, merely point out that this is not as simple a case that he paints to be. France could have have easily been supporting puppet governments and preventing countries from working out solutions that would make these countries strong, while at the same time not being able to do it everywhere and always. It is not illogical to assume that in France tried to keep as many countries in the CFA, but in some cases failed to do so or just decided it was not worth the effort. AD2. I haven't read on that yet, but the video has also stated that the countries only have access to 15% of their own money and have to literally borrow it from France if they need more at commercial rates. That sounds incredibly limiting. AD3. I have found an article about this and it states "(...)Strong growth and low inflation from the early independence period did not survive the economic shocks of 1986 to 1993, the CFA became significantly overvalued and subject to increasing deficits in the French Treasury’s operations accounts. Domestic production lapsed, and African countries increasingly relied on imported materials. CFA countries’ public debt increased and central banks exceeded statutory ceilings, leading to significant fiscal imbalances.". Guess having an external agent devalue your currency years after it was required, without looking at specifics of the each country that uses it can be detrimental. AD5. It is true, but does not prove anything by itself. Still, I appreciate you try and poke holes in the video, it is always good to have someone challenge such opinions. Best way of finding out what really is going on.

Hey CaspianReport, try to do a video on Haiti's history and their huge debt to France
@arthas640

Shirvan mostly covers "underdog against outside intervention" stories while Haiti kind of got themselves in this mess. The French screwed them over during colonial days, but they've been ruled by a series of local dictators that embroidered them in costly wars, spent tons of their money, exploited much of their natural resources but pissed they proceeds away, and now they're stuck with little natural resources and an uneducated and rural population in an area prone to expensive natural disasters. The corrupt government they've built up after decades of insane dictatorships leave them with a political system that makes it difficult to effectively invest foreign aid/investment, so it's no surprise they're in debt. The French may do some unethical things here, but there's also not much they can do to help the situation either: if they cut aid/investment the country will collapse, if they give money as charity it will be stolen, and if they try to improve the situation then people will claim they're attempting a coup/regime change. Kind of a shitty situation all around.

Spain's power already came to its end in 19th century. By the 20th century, Spain was only 1/10 of its former self. Equatorial Guinea's dictator probably saw this and thus chose France as a form of life insurance.

@Soaring Wings Second Stage trust me, I'm aware of most of this. My point about Belgium is that the nation did in fact benefit from the scramble of Africa and yes, Leopold was in direct control of Congo, not the Belgian state itself but that still doesn't excuse the fact the nation itself benefitted. I'm not saying tarnish the nation, just bring more awareness to what happened. The same thing needs to be done with France and Mexico during the 1860s, America during the 1890s and especially the American occupation of Haiti.

@@antoniobrooks6411 It sounds tremendously racist and an apologist for colonialism, but without irony, the US occupation was one of the best (if not the best) times in the history of Haiti and laid the foundations for a relative period of stability (at least economic) that lasted until the rise of Duvalier in 1957 . What were tremendously oppressive and arbitrary bestialities were relations with Guatemala, Nicaragua, Honduras or El Salvador.
