My dad introduced my to model building and soon I built a Matchbox kit. I loved these Matchbox kits so much, the small dioramas for tanks and ground vehicle were a joy, there were no flash and the easy way the kits were assembled made my day. Unfortunately Matchbox sold off the models but luckily enough to German Revel, so most of the ground vehicles I can buy now but not the aircraft. But I have bought lots of old Matchbox models through the last five years. Yay!

I got my first Tamiya kit in the very late 1960s, the Panzer III Ausf L that is still widely available. Had the Monogram StugIV too, so could compare the two directly. The Tamiya was the better kit. A short time later I got the Tamiya (forever TAM-i-ya to me) M-41 Walker Bulldog remote control tank. The twin-motor with handheld control box (two switches and 4 D-Cell batteries) intrigued me. 😊

My first Tamiya was their 1/48 Lancaster Dambuster in around 1979. It was a fantastic kit for its time and went great with the 1/48 Monogram B-17.

I honestly don't know what was my first Tamiya kit, but I remember seeing them as a kid. I grew up on Airfix but opposite the Airfix shelf and carousel, in the tiny model shop here in Bletchley, I remember seeing the big Tamiya 1/25 Centurion with full interior display model, I was so hooked seeing all the detail, the shop keeper kindly showed me what was in the box, I so wanted to build it, all that detail was lovely, but in no way could afford it, next to it was a Tamiya T-55, the initial version in the 60's, and even that was out of reach price wise. But I still remember my first kit,Airfix of course :) model on

Back when I was a much younger person . I got interested in tanks mostly I did airfix and monogram kits. Simply because that was what my local hobby store carried. Then I went in one day and the only armored kit they had was a Bandai 148 scale 148 scale tank. Got it home opened the box and spent the next 2 hours looking at all the tiny parts. That started A Love Affair.

My first Tamiya kit was the 1/35 JagdTiger with remote control (like Max's T34). I was about 11 years old and my Dad bought it for me at Quaker City Hobby Shop in Philadelphia. I rushed home and built it because I was so anxious to play with it, which I did, until it finally succumbed to my heavy use. I still have that model, sans the remote control, which I rebuilt/repainted a few years ago, and now sits on my shelf. I have a fond memory of my Dad every time I look at it.

I was introduced to Tamiya in the early 80's after visiting a novelty shop on Mott St. in Chinatown, NYC. It carried a decent amount of Tamiya armor kits.

I would guesstimate mid-70’s with 25 Tamiya instruction sheets from completed kits: 1 car (Datsun 280 ZX), 1 jet (F-105D in 1/100 plus the Saab Viggen in same scale, no instructions but in an early 80’s “Mom-mandated dusting” pic; both were nice kits), 1 X-plane (X-1), and 22 armor. Plus 33 kits (armor & aircraft) in the stash. Unfortunately, the only models still in my display are the X-1, M3 Stuart, and 1/48 M4 Sherman. First kit was probably the PAK 35/36 (pretty cool Tamiya included parts to mount the gun on their Hanomag), or the M42 Duster. The Tiger I was remote control. The M4A3E8 Sherman, M36 Jackson, M60A1, and M60A2 were motorized. The M42 and M551 used just the metal motor mount and drive axle in their construction (no motor included). The T-62A was my first battle damage with hot pin penetrations of the turret (get ‘em my Pattons, Abrams, Chieftain, and Leopard!). Still have my 1978 MRC-Tamiya catalog.

Did not know of Tamiya until adulthood. First model was Revell F 100 as a birthday gift at 5 y/0. Testors, Aurora, and lots of Lindberg from then on. Usually at my Ben Franklin store.

Yep, Dad introduced me to kit building. When I was a kid, Monogram and Revell and Aurora seemed the only choices and I always went Monogram. I can’t recall getting a Revell. My recollection is that Revell was more expensive then, in the 1970s.

I think my introduction to Tamiya was the late 60s - ;maybe 1967; my dad and I would regularly visit Valley Plaza Hobbies in North Hollywood, Ca. This shop was the shop that 'supported' the then-new magazine Scale Modeler, and most of the kits featured in the magazine were available at Valley Plaza - they even would have some of the featured built-up models from the articles on display. This was a great inspiration for a young kid learning to hone his skills on modelbuilding and learning the ways of the airbrush. But back to Tamiya - Valley Plaza was also an importer of many of the Japanese kits at that time and I recall seeing the Tamiya kits - usually white boxes - on the shelves. I remember them being in 1/50th scale, and I recall seeing kits of the Pete, the Raiden and the Tony - all subjects that were fascinating and certainly not produced by the American companies.

My first Tamiya model was a Chevy WW2 Desert Rats truck which I still have packed away. Think I'll get it out due to this video. First models were Aurora WW1 airplanes my brother and I got for Christmas. I got a Fokker D VII, and he got an Albatross. I dont have very many models by Tamiya, but really like the ones I have. Excellent fit and quality. But Aurora has a permanent soft spot in my heart.

My first Tamiya kit was the Tiger I motorized (single motor). It cost $ 8.00 Canadian. Minimum wage was $ 1.00 per hour. I could have got 2 or 3 domestic kits of various subjects. Later got a Panther, Jadtiger, Jagdpanther. Then they started bringing in static kits in the late 60s early 70s. Still more expensive than the domestic kits. Even had a Tamiya Gepard kit in 1/35 that had 3 motors. One was for the turret. Fun times. I just saw the Tiger I kit in a store and the box art (white box) sold me as it looked like a real tank on the box.

The US headquarters is located in Orange County, California, and Tamiya is pronounced Tameeya. My father was the plant manager for Revell in the 1970s when I was a kid. I was lucky enough to spend the day on Saturdays and watch the model masters not only build the box art samples, but I also got to watch them fabricate the tooling to produce the models. I was there when they made the C.H.P. motorcycle from the TV show Chips and I got to keep many of the original box art models. I still build models 50 years later. I built them professionally for 4 years as well.

I was introduced to Tamiya kits in the fall of 1973 via their long gone series of 1/100 scale aircraft kits. Their 1/48 scale kits came the next year with the Frank, Jack, and Brewster Buffalo. All of those are still in their line and are great starter models. For Hasegawa it was the Jake floatplane on the catapult.....

I did some super quick research and I think it is actually a typo on the box as I cannot find any 1 /25th scale model tanks by Tamiya. That is a more common problem than you might think when translating from Japanese to English characters. If you can find a 1 to 25 scale box or kit, please let me know at maxsmodels@yahoo.com.

My first kits were Aurora. They were cheap and I could get them at the local drug store which always had a good selection as well as Testors enamel paint and of course, tube glue. My first tank was the Aurora King Tiger. I was delighted then disappointed that Atlantis had it listed as an upcoming release but then it disappeared. So disappointed I wouldn't get to go back to the mid 60's and build that guy again. Anyway as far as Tamiya, my first was in the early 70's, a 1/35 Jagdtiger.

My first Tamiya kit I got as a present from my grandad in Japan in '67. It was a 1/75 scale Raiden and was pretty terrible. The wing assembly missed the wing roots on the fuselage by about a quarter inch- per side! I filled them in and it looked pretty good. There weren't many Kits of the Raiden then so it was a novelty. Later I got the 1/25 scale Panther kit with the remote control and the working suspension. It was way too hard for me and I screwed up the suspension but I got it all together anyway and went driving it all over.

Don't think I built a Tamiya until I was in my 30s, about 25-30 years ago. My cousin in the Army wanted a King Tiger for his collection and I said I'd build the kit if he bought it. Until then, Monogram's armor line and the occasional Revell were the only armor models I'd built and the difference in quality of the Tamiya kits even in the 1990s astounded me. As I told my cousin, I half-expected the dang thing to start up and go hunting in my living room when I finished it. I bubble wrapped and boxed it and gave it to my uncle who drove it from NW Ohio to my cousin's posting in Kansas. Just the other day, my cousin texted me a photo of the King Tiger, still sitting on his shelf in Kansas. He reminded me, laughing, of something I'd forgotten: As a joke, I'd painted the tank commander as wearing a pair of Nikes instead of tanker boots.
